What do you do that you earn six figures?

It seems like a lot of people make a lot of money and it seems like I’m missing out on something. So those of you that do, whats your occupation that pays so well?

No on call? I'm in a three week rotation right now (doing level 3 support for DWDM and data network). Less than optimal but almost never get called.

Do you have to do C.O.T. duty as well? I've heard the C.O.'s are empty except for the ocassional installers. Does outside plant have to fire up the generators now?

Installer is a great career for a person willing to travel. I was non union but we built the co-lo's when it was still Bell Atlantic. Then upgraded the gps antennas on the C.O.s

Edit: For a party trick I've pulled a hundred dollar bill out and offered it to anyone that could snap lacing cord with their bare hands. No one ever took my money.

How do you get an employer to pay for your technical training / degree. That’s my dreammm

Go talk to a recruiter. Many will pay for technical training or give it to you with certifications that are recognized. It's not perfect if you don't know what you want but I know folks in the trades and cyber who've done well after the military.

And there's healthcare, education money and potentially retirement money after too.

Right on. Thanks for the insight. Much appreciated.

It's not for everyone and you need to be an advocate for yourself but if you know you want specific training its essentially a huge jobs program

Right on. Mostly interested in cyber security and creative technology (AR/interactive). Totally really they are two very different disciplines.

Did you just get in touch with technical recruiters on LinkedIn?

Oh I meant military recruiters. Sorry for being vague.

That’s awesome. How did you get your foot in the door at Verizon?

Can you explain why every Verizon/Comcast tech shakes his head then tells us that the last guy didn’t know what he was doing? If it happened twice, then, ok, we’re getting a series of better and better folks, but it’s happened 5 times now.

interesting. so there’s no one going back to clients to evaluate the installation, in order to improve the service?
