FIRE article - non-software developer edition, in their 40s with kids, expats in Portugal

Source: https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/19/how-this-couple-retired-at-40-and-moved-their-family-to-portugal.html

Side hustles, frugal living, and investments. These seem to be the key things that these couple did. Even more amazing is that they were working for less than $100k each in the San Francisco bay area and still pulled off FIRE in their early 40s.

I respect Mr Money Mustache because he at least has been up front that retire early to him meant the could work on things he wanted to work on instead of slaving away at a corporate job. He has also been pretty upfront with what the blog earns. He has started to spend a bit more and say it was a business expense but it really is nothing extravagant.

I tend to agree with that assessment. I have actually learned a lot from out rich journey and I think they make decent content. I just get fed up with the entire mirage that is YouTube and influencers. They are still working 40 hours a week but on stuff they enjoy more...good on them. Just stop calling it retirement. I'm tired of people literally changing the definition of retire. Retire means exiting the workforce not doing something you like more for a different paycheck in a different place.
