TIL Snoop is a redditor

520

u/queencityrangers 26d ago

*was a redditor 3 years ago

328

u/Hellknightx 26d ago

3 years is also how long it's been since Vern Troyer (RIP), Peter Mayhew (RIP), and Val Kilmer stopped posting, too. I miss all the casual celebrity redditors that would appear in different subs.

u/MRintheKEYS 26d ago edited 26d ago

Val Kilmer actually responded to one of my comments one time and I was blown away. The Iceman was talking to me. I must be dangerous.

67

u/AsperaAstra 26d ago

If you havent yet, check out his documentary "Val". Made me feel things. Cried a bit. Highly recommended.

11

u/hotntastychitlin 26d ago

My heart hurt for him after watching that. It hurt a smidge less when he said he sounds worse than he feels.

3

u/OddScentedDoorknob 26d ago

I'll have to check that out. I've always been a fan of his, but then I read a bunch of stuff about how he was allegedly a total shit during shooting of Island of Dr. Moreau, and lost some respect for him. But I have a feeling it may have been hearsay or exaggeration, and I'd like to give the guy another chance.

3

u/AsperaAstra 26d ago

His "behaviour" is covered in the doc.

0

u/EMlN3M 26d ago

You pretty much have to be a Val Kilmer fan to enjoy that doc. I tried watching it and was bored out of my mind. Grew up watching his movies so I thought it would be interesting but holy Hell it was a snore fest

5

u/AsperaAstra 26d ago

It's slow, yeah, but its a documentary.

3

u/OddScentedDoorknob 25d ago

Thanks for the recommendation, it did increase my appreciation of him. I had no idea he was in such bad shape. It's remarkable how many great and memorable roles he had in a relatively short period. His Jim Morrison is one of the best embodiments of a real person that I've ever seen. I'm a bit annoyed about how dismissive he is of Top Secret, which is brilliant, and one of my favorites since childhood.

I have to wonder what amazing roles we are missing out on with him not having a career the breadth of a DeNiro or Pacino. That said, when I look over his IMDB page it's clear that he had a long stretch of not-so-great films, perhaps because of his reputation for being difficult? But he's so damn good I can't imagine he wouldn't have made a comeback and killed some old man roles. Maybe he still can.

The movie also made me re-evaluate my cynicism about today's "everbody films and photographs their whole lives" culture. Kilmer did it decades ago and look how meaningful it is to him and his family (and now to his fans). Maybe one day we'll all be grateful for all the seemingly meaningless life moments we film and post.

u/epictylerone808 26d ago

So, I thought we were talking about Wilmer Valderama this whole time and I’m thinking what happened to the Yo Momma dude.

5

u/TallDarkandWTF 26d ago

We’re obviously talking about Valmer Kilderama

3

u/Toledojoe 26d ago

Would you say that you were in a zone of danger?

32

u/YouAreAPyrate 26d ago

My first thought was, "Hmm, I wonder if celebrities soured on Reddit after the RAMPART AMA disaster?".

Then I went and looked it up and it was 10 YEARS AGO. WHAT THE FUCK.

37

u/Hellknightx 26d ago

If anything, celebs were a lot more active during the Rampart era because Victoria was so good at setting up and hosting AMAs. When reddit fired her, the site lost a lot of credibility and accessibility for celebrities, since she used to set up everything and do all the work for them.

11

u/YouAreAPyrate 26d ago

True, that was the real end of the good AMAs.

3

u/wookvegas 26d ago

RIP /u/chooter

I mean... she's not dead, but... still. I have never been so mad over the firing of someone I've never met. Reddit changed a whole lot that day.

2

u/v0idf1sh 24d ago

I really miss what r/IAmA used to be, we knew the day she got fired that AMAs were dead but it still stings.

3

u/MarvinStolehouse 26d ago

WTF 10 YEARS AGO?

3

u/YouAreAPyrate 26d ago

Right? What the fuck happened? My account is 10 years old now!

2

u/its_meme69 26d ago

whats the rampart ama disaster? link?

1

u/ZionEmbiid 26d ago

Not sure if I can do it justice, so you might be better off googling it. But, essentially Woody Harrelson was trying to advertise his movie Rampart. Not sure how much was his/his handler’s fault and how much was redditors being stupid. But, he answered every question steering back to Rampart, maybe even demanding Rampart related questions. Also, I don’t think it’s a great movie.

2

u/Chaoticfrenchfry 26d ago

He also (allegedly) had ‘sex’ with a high school student at prom

1

u/ZionEmbiid 26d ago

Wow! I had not heard that.

2

u/Chaoticfrenchfry 26d ago

1

u/ZionEmbiid 26d ago

That’s crazy! Although the comment doesn’t say how old anyone was or how long ago. I also don’t see anything from the original comment that accuses him of statutory anything, but I maybe missed it. They did say that she was a high school graduate, and most people are 18 when they graduate.

2

u/merme 26d ago

Wait what? No that was like a couple years ago, right??

RIGHT???

1

u/Linktank 26d ago

Nooo.... That can't be right... I'm not going to look that up and continue this happy fantasy.

1

u/Trevzz 25d ago

Wtf no way

1

u/YouAreAPyrate 25d ago

Yo, at this point I don't even remember what I did on the internet before reddit. Stumbleupon? Newgrounds? Textsfromlastnight?

75

u/VikingTeddy 26d ago

At least we've still got Arnie.

10

u/call_me_Kote 26d ago

Brandon Sanderson as well. I think he absolutely counts.

31

u/Fr0gm4n 26d ago

6

u/Kaldricus 26d ago

T pain was pretty active at one point, I believe

3

u/GenitalMotors 25d ago

Missed opportunity with that link

1

u/Fr0gm4n 25d ago

That really would have been the correct and completely forgivable move, wouldn't it?

30

u/Jake123194 26d ago

Now you've done it, Arnie gonna pop off next, Reddit strikes again.

6

u/shitdobehappeningtho 26d ago

Dude has like all the reddit trophies too

3

u/Gregory_D64 26d ago

He's a treasure on here

8

u/Snatch_Pastry 26d ago

And Charles Stross and Daniel Abraham. But those guys are a bit niche.

5

u/Nemesischonk 26d ago

/u/GovSchwarzenegger is still very much active though!

3

u/KaosInOrder 26d ago

Does that... does that mean Reddit is not popular anymore?

3

u/idre 26d ago

But at least we can always count on Wil Wheaton.

2

u/shitdobehappeningtho 26d ago

Val Kilmer? What the hell? 😄

3

u/Hellknightx 26d ago

He used to be really active on the movies sub. He showed up for an AMA one day, and liked it so much that he just stuck around answering random questions people had about his movies and career.

2

u/shitdobehappeningtho 26d ago

That's so great!

4

u/MRintheKEYS 26d ago

Oh yeah man. Can’t vouch for how “old” Val acted but I ended up having a pretty good chat with “new” Val and the dude is ace.

Made some comment about how it was a travesty he didn’t get an Oscar nom from Tombstone. Out of the blue he commented on it like a few hours later and it ended up a discussion on how the movie was made. How he literally slept on Kurt’s couch every night to storyboard the next days scenes as the recently hired director didn’t have the chops on how to handle this kind of production with all these stars. He came across as seriously passionate, intelligent, and charismatic. Even through text on the screen. Have a lot of respect for him now.

3

u/shitdobehappeningtho 26d ago

The famous people you never hear about seem to always be so cool. It's a little different nowadays (pandemic nerfed socialization) but still.

Also, underrated Batman I always forget was Batman.

-6

u/forcedaspiration 26d ago

They, Reddit, started becoming a no longer fringe free speech platform, but a control tool. CCP bought a stake about after a year after the snoop exodus through tencent, and this site is a free speech free zone ever since. This place used to be cool.

1

u/Kiacha 26d ago

What happened to you, man?

1

u/jakemallory 26d ago

Every aggressive troll response could be incognito Gary Busey.

1

u/Salty-Marketing9854 25d ago

3 years ago a young friend of mine taught me…….

u/reray124 26d ago edited 26d ago

Bet you he just forgot the account password.... Ever seen his streams?

113

u/AdamantiumBalls 26d ago

Legit just leaves stream on to an empty room

8

u/Lotsofloveneeded 26d ago

Yeah he stopped posting after TIL posts about his backwards views on things kept hitting the front page.

4

u/Clobber420 26d ago

Is this in regards to snoop? Just wondering.

2

u/Zandrick 26d ago

What views?

2

u/kidkolumbo 26d ago

I bet he's using an alt.

1

u/PartyKrill 26d ago

He was only here to promote the new reggae album wasn’t he?

-6

u/lifeboy91 26d ago

2012 actually.

I’m stoned.

29

u/Captain_Nipples 26d ago

81 X 7 nefew..

He did an AMA back when he was Snoop Lion and posted fairly regularly.

So did William Shatner.. Then he pointed out how racist Reddit was. Which was true.

It's changed a lot since then.. but there was a lot of casual racism all over it

6

u/MrMilkyaww 26d ago

Omg I forgot about the snooplion phase, man was truly out of this world at that point

1

u/Captain_Nipples 25d ago

Yea. I never listened to any of it.. maybe heard one track once? IIRC it was reggae ish?

18

u/i_give_you_gum 26d ago

Hell there's still a crapload of casual racism on this platform, it's just interwoven with political stances now

6

u/Alaira314 26d ago

It's not so much the fact that casual racism(/sexism/homophobia/transphobia/endorsements of terrorism/etc) exists on reddit that bothers me. I mean, it does in a way, but I realize that it exists in the world and therefore it's going to exist on reddit as well; while I don't like it, it doesn't disturb me. It's that it gets so many upvotes! Being able to anonymously push posts up like that really brings out the asshole in people. Those comments wouldn't get near the amount of upvotes they do if which users upvoted it were publicly viewable.

2

u/i_give_you_gum 26d ago

Well, yeah when I say on this platform, I mean on the front page

It annoys me when somebody posts some random piece of nazi paraphernalia, and says something like my grandfather brought this back from the war etc. etc.

Like I dont care, I dont want to see a human lampshade either, there's more interesting content in the world than a nazi belt buckle or whatever

6

u/EarthtoGeoff 26d ago

Also a mod of several subs including /r/trees

2

u/hypnoganja 26d ago

Go read his AMA, it's the best. My favorite is still his response to someone asking him if he likes trains: "I like Cadillacs"

Pure gold.

2

u/SteinfeldFour 26d ago

He was actually a moderator for a couple subreddits too lmao. Unsurprisingly one of the subreddits was /r/trees

*edit: I just checked and snoop is still listed as a moderator over at /r/trees

5

u/BeltfedOne 26d ago

Me too.

6

u/LJ-Rubicon 26d ago

Was, back when Reddit was good. Now it just a cesspool

29

u/DanHam117 26d ago

The thing I’ve always liked about Reddit is that across all 9 years I’ve been on here, it’s always been possible to find a good space somewhere. The default subs have been contentious and questionable for as long as I can remember but if you look hard enough, somewhere on here is a subreddit that will be what you need it to be

13

u/madeamashup 26d ago

I keep thinking about leaving reddit and then I connect to something incredible that I never would found otherwise. Like I come on with a question about car maintenance and meet a retired mechanic with a lot of time on his hands who knows more about my specific model than anyone else on Earth and wants to walk me through diagnosis step-by-step and give me maintenance advice.

6

u/DanHam117 26d ago

Absolutely. I’m not saying this place is paradise, it definitely has its problems, but the reason I keep coming back is because I find little slices of internet awesomeness in between all the bullshit

2

u/mooimafish3 26d ago

Yep, default subs have been trash for a decade. It's the niche subs that make Reddit good

2

u/Alaira314 26d ago

In many ways, the default subs have gotten better over the 10~ years I've been on reddit. For all the talk about how much racism, sexism, transphobia, etc gets spread here - and it does, don't get me wrong - it used to be so much worse. And you were afraid to call it out, because that would paint a target on your back and then you'd get downvoted/bullied for it, so it usually went almost entirely unchallenged. That culture has significantly lessened, to the point where I'm comfortable confronting those kinds of posts because the odds of facing significant retaliation are fairly low anymore.

1

u/CryBerry 26d ago

Yeah, it was /r/spacedicks:(

61

u/papermaker83 26d ago

And yet, here you are, swimming with the rest of us.

I feel that, back when AMAs had actual good celebrities

27

u/FiveInchesIsAverage 26d ago edited 26d ago

Looking back, once Victoria was shown the door this entire place took a massive nosedive
