Why the hell is Snake's bandana fused with his forehead? I thought it's fake when I first saw it here because of this...

Infinite ammo

I don't get it :( is this some mgs inside joke?

u/BrevityIsTheSoul 10d ago edited 9d ago

MGS1 had two endings. The bad ending, in which Meryl dies and you ride off into the sunset with Otacon, unlocks active camouflage. The good ending with Meryl unlocks the infinite ammo bandana.

In MGS2, Snake uses (and loses) the active camo in the opening cutscene. Much later, he offers Raiden ammunition. When Raiden asks how much Snake has left for himself, Snake indicates that his banana provides infinite ammo.

(EDIT: leaving infinite ammo banana for my perpetual shame. Shaaaaaaame)

124

u/Extension_Berry_1149 10d ago

Lmao I forgot he points to the bandana

143

u/rzelln 10d ago

It can almost be interpreted as him tapping his head, as if to say the real weapon is your mind, and you never can run out of ammo for it.

But yeah, it's mostly a cheeky joke about how by that point in the game you're actually stuck in a VR simulation, and things are operating by video game logic.

96

u/RosariusAU 10d ago

Raiden, turn the game console off right now.

62

u/DaringDomino3s 10d ago

Probably the coolest video game memory I have, my friend and I were taking turns beating the game and were up all night at the point when this happens in the game and thought we were losing it.

I've yet to experience anything in games quite like that since.

I absolutely HATED that part when I was younger. I was so confused when the whole thing started going batshit and then the Colonel starts talking in a robot voice and his face shows his skull...I had to turn it off for a bit. I wasn't good with creepy back then.

This video is really good

The VR theory has never been confirmed, and all the evidence that points to it is either regular Kojima goofiness that's in every one of his games (the bandana thing, which is just a joke) or just regular video game stuff (respawning pickups during boss fights).

When characters in game refer to the events as a "simulation" they don't mean virtual reality, they mean "we're putting you through a reenactment of Shadow Moses to turn you into the next Solid Snake".

5

u/Tiucaner PC 9d ago

You were not stuck in VR simulation but it was meta commentary of themes at that particular part of the game and the fact that you as a player were playing a videogame simulating reality.

In a 22 minute cutscene

158

u/LePopeUrban 10d ago

Nah 22 minute codec call that happens directly after saving

82

u/Redmangc1 10d ago

Oh God i cannot wait for the MGS4 remake with its 2 hour cutscene with a save point in between. I need to see that shit in 16k

41

u/LNViber 10d ago

I was defending that shit against my friends last night. One of them was talking about how they dont play video games for 30 minute unskippable cutscene. I corrected him that it's actually a movie with a load screen in the middle of it. That when you choose to play a MGS game you are willingly signing up for an experience unlike any other game and at the 4th installment a 2 hour cutscene should be one of the more palatable weird things for the game to do.

16

u/kevmaster200 10d ago

I would load up that final save occasionally specifically when I wanted to watch a movie. I believe it was right before the microwave hallway.

8

u/LNViber 10d ago

I wish I had a PS3 so I could do the same. I still have my playstation vita and I keep it charged for the sole purpose of playing MGS3 again. Couldnt tell you how many times I beat that on the vita alone. I also have it for 3ds and ps2. These movie games are just to much damn fun. Also so insanely wonderfully convoluted that if anyone says they understood it from one play through I know they are either a compulsive liar or so dumb they think their smart.

5

u/MyStationIsAbandoned 10d ago

you can emulate PS3 easily now. if you still have a copy of the game you can rip the iso for the disk and play it that way. all 100% legit and legal. Sony probably doesn't like it. but sony also wont make their consoles backward compatible or put emulators in their consoles...so...

4

u/kevmaster200 10d ago

I still got my old mgs4 bundle PS3. Last model that came with PS2 backwards compatibility. I honestly think I've misplaced mgs4 tho...

4

u/LNViber 10d ago

You can always get another copy if MGS4, that playstation on the other hand belongs in a museum. I imagine they are still worth more than they were when brand new.

Snake: "So, what you're saying is this isn't just an ordinary bandanna?"

Major: "Not in the least, Snake. It's been intricately woven with what we call 'nano-fibers'. These fibers are microscopic, almost undetectable. They're designed to transmit crucial information."

Snake: "How does it do that? It's just a piece of cloth, isn't it?"

Major: "In simple terms, yes. But in reality, it's a conduit. It interfaces directly with your cranial fluid, using it as an amplifier to send information to a designated relay point."

Snake: "My cranial fluid... as an amplifier? You're pulling my leg, Major."

Major: "This is DARPA tech, Snake. It's no joke. The science might be hard to grasp, but think back to the Cold War... We had to adapt, improvise, innovate. That's just what we're doing here."

Snake: "So, I'm wearing this thing, and it's sending signals through my skull. How does it stay connected?"

Major: "Good question. That's where the grip compound comes into play. It ensures what we call a 'derma-lectric' connection. It creates a bridge, a conduit, between the bandanna and your skin."

Snake: "A 'derma-lectric' connection... Sounds complicated."

Major: "It might sound that way, but this is necessary, Snake. This connection, this tech - it's all designed to keep you safe."

Cut to Sigint at his terminal, data streaming across multiple monitors.

Sigint: "Snake, from my end, I receive a constant feed of data from you. Everything from your vital signs to your delta brain waves."

Snake: "My...delta brain waves?"

Sigint: "They're the slowest kind of brain wave, typically associated with deep dreamless sleep. They might reveal crucial information under stress or combat. Consider it an extra layer of security for you, Snake."

Snake: "So all of this... the nano-fibers, the 'derma-lectric' connection... it's all so I can save my game to the PS2 8MB Memory Card™?"

Major: "Exactly, Snake. A steady stream of data, all safely stored away. You've got the full support of Sigint and myself. Remember, we're all in this together."

Cutscene ends.

u/FistfulDeDolares 10d ago

u/RawSac 10d ago

I believe DARPA was called ARPA back then and also "think back to the cold war" doesn't make sense(it is set in the cold-war era) . Everything else feels like it was ripped straight from the script tho.

3

u/Vigilante8841 10d ago

If memory serves, MGS3 does call DARPA by its modern name. Granted, this game also has CalorieMates, which weren't produced until the 80s, and the Ocelot Paradox game over screen also suggests MGS3 is one of the VR sims Raiden went through prior to the Big Shell Incident (a popular theory I subscribe to). This would also explain the "Think back to the Cold War" line, as Raiden could possibly be talking to Campbell and a FOXHOUND technician while in a simulated briefing room, before he's fully gotten into the character of Naked Snake.

6

u/airshowboat 10d ago

So, there is something called nano-fibers that are woven into the bandanna that transmit information to a relay point using Snake's CF, or cranial fluid as an amplifier. A grip compound, commonly known as GC is used to ensure a sufficient DLC ...thats short for derma-lectric connection for simple folks. Sigint and Major have a terminal that receives a steady stream of data from Snake's body and also his DBW, short for, delta brain waves. This is all necessary so you can save your game to the PS2 8MB Memory Card™.This reminds me of my days during the cold war, such a solemn time in my life.

How's that?

u/calex-xor 10d ago Silver I'll Drink to That

Sigint - Hey Snake! What's up?

Snake - Sigint, why is the bandana so tight? I fell like my head is going to pop off any minute now.

Sigint - Oh damn, I guess we must have forgotten to mention that. See it is because of the nanofibers.

Snake - Nanofibers? What are those?

Sigint - The future Snake! Tiny, almost imperceptible threads woven into the bandanna that transmit information from your head to a relay point using your cranial fluid as an amplifier. A grip compound is used to ensure a sufficient derma-lectric connection which is why it's so tight.

Snake - So it reads my thoughts?

Sigint - Nothing so fancy! I don't think that's even possible before a few more generations. No, what it does is send a steady stream of your data, which includes your stamina, health, inventory and what not to a terminal on our end whenever you reach specific parts of your mission.

Snake - So it saves my data.

Sigint - Yeah! You got it man!

Snake - But I can already use Para-Medic for that.

Sigint - Ah now see, your saves with Para-medic are manual, that is unless you decide to save on your end, no saves will be recorded. However, this is automatic saving, that regularly backs up your data in case there's some issue with the manual saves.

Snake - Hmm, automatic...

MGSV did that.

5

u/looklook876 10d ago

And it looks super lame

6

That’s because it’s supposed to be a repaired version of the bandanna. In the last trailer for MGSV they had a sequence that had MGS3 Naked Snake and his bandanna was all wrinkled.

Yeah, I swear it'll be much worse without it. Even cosplayers have to add that to their costumes.

On a related note, it heartens me to see Metal Gear Solid back on the forefront of conversations in the gaming sphere again. Thinking of the players who got into the series through V witnessing the zany, ridiculous shit the less recent titles have fills me with joy.

Listening to The Boss lecturing Snake for running around the jungle naked, hearing Snake have an orgasm over a custom 1911, witnessing the origins of "You're pretty good", hearing Ocelot do that meow to call over his posse, having Para-medic be exasperated at Snake for being asked how a scorpion would taste... Ahh, good times. And newcomers will get to experience them, too.

u/ComfortableAmount993 10d ago

It's dirty and soaked with sweat and who knows what any cloth will stick like that

2

u/Hashirammed 10d ago

Nanomachines son, they harden headbands in response to physical trauma

2

u/Flemball47 10d ago

Give the guy a break it's humid as shit in that jungle, you should see his underwear.

2

u/Carbot1337 10d ago

I just assumed it was wet/muddy - if you've played the game, you'd understand.

2

u/Broseph_Bobby 10d ago

Just sayin.

But if you wear a bandana in the jungle for a few days and it will kind of fuse with your forehead.

2

u/xarchangel85x 10d ago

Nanomachines, son

2

u/cacatua_azul 10d ago

probably got really sweaty and stuck to his face

2

u/Replicant_06 10d ago

Because tight fabric tends to conform to a person's body when wet.

The dude is literally in a humid jungle swamp, sweating and trudging through water, mud, etc.

So no shit his Bandana is sticking to his forehead. Like have you ever seen someone wear a wet t-shirt?

2

u/Brave-Entrance-5193 10d ago

The reason his bandana is so tight on his head is because at the end he will take it off to reveal that the entire game was actually just one giant illusion brought on from blood pooling on his brain. MARK MY WORDS

2

u/criticalt3 10d ago

It's "fury lines" as I've seen some fans call em, Old Snake has em in 4 also.

2

u/Training_Rough2756 10d ago

Snake's bandana is his source of power. Infinite ammo, legendary stealth, and a hairdo that never quits.

Personality.

2

u/tuxedo_dantendo 10d ago

For infinite ammo

2

u/Gynharasaki 10d ago

It's not a bandana. It's a kevlar plate molded to his resting dick face.

2

u/carthuscrass 10d ago

He's...schweaty.

u/ADGx27 10d ago

Always has been

A Very thin material

IDC about he art of this shit, I just hope it's as optimized as MGSV and they won't do a super high tech photo realistic graphics that requires NASA's PC's. MGSV is already graphically stunning even at its age and can run on toasters really smooth.

My iGPU can run that game on Med-High settings. I hope I can say the same on this one.

2

u/michaelshreds 10d ago

Maybe it’s really tight and silk. It does flow really well in the wind. Along with his mullet. Also that’s big boss…… just sayin lol

Get ready. This is going to be the shittiest cashgrab of the generation. The classic collection only exists to ease the backlash for how rough this will be.

2

u/Bunktavious 10d ago

This is like every time I see an AI portrait of a girl in a tight catsuit. The poster has spent hours touching up every little detail, correcting all the faults - and then fails to notice that the catsuit plunges into and confirms with the girl's bellybutton.

2

u/MutantOctopus 10d ago

The real answer is just that it's an unrealistic emphasis for the sake of character design. Having those contours allows the expression to be made clearer and is believable "enough" as long as you don't think too much about it. MGS might not be a "cartoon" series per se but that doesn't mean a little suspension of disbelief can't be used to touch up a character's features so they read better.

Plus TBH this is a series where a guy runs on water and throws a missile back at the thing attacking him, and where a grafted arm taking over the host's consciousness with that of its original owner is a believable plot point. Honestly this is probably one of the most realistic things in the series.

Coming to PS5

Me and my trusty PS4 since Highschool.

Me: Looks like the time has come buddy, you served me well...

2

Nanomachines

u/Thaifox 10d ago

Always Has Been

2

u/CaptainAgreeable3824 10d ago

If you're an OG fan then you'll know the bandana has been like this for a very long time.

2

u/Anderjak 10d ago

it has to do with Yoji Shinkawa's art

Shinkawa is a long-time collaborator with Kojima, having worked on Metal Gear Solid, Zone of the Enders, and, most recently, Death Stranding

he has an extremely striking style that the MGS franchise had been known for up to 3/4, and the way he renders the bandanna on Snake is with these deep, thick lines on the forehead

and, yes, it looks strange when you try to do a literal translation to a more realistic style of rendering like this

2

u/Lemonsqueezzyy 9d ago

the bandana has nanomachines, obviously

2

u/uclatommy 9d ago

I just want to remind everyone how old they are. This game is 20 years old.

2

u/Manu-Kesna 9d ago

Are you new to the series?

2

u/Wuntoothrie 9d ago

Obviously, he's slowly becoming Batman.

2

u/danielzboy 9d ago

It could be the same reason why Jotaro Joestar’s hair fuses with his cap: It just looks badass. MGS Art Director Yoji Shinkawa likes to draw Snake like this with the angry brows showing through the bandana.

2

u/zorrodood 9d ago

I got downvoted for asking why his bandana is designed to have angry wrinkles.

2

u/ScroteCheese 9d ago

That's why he's so grumpy all the time. Ever worn a bandana or hat that was too tight? It gets uncomfortable really quickly

2

u/Weak_Gate_5460 9d ago

Stylistic choice, like batman mask have the same thing
