If they want to make a bunch of money using the Lord of the Rings franchise, just remaster this game! Instead, we get games like Gollum...

Loved this game and the expansion , BFME 3 should of been out years ago , thinks its a licensing issue or something .

174

u/Zjoee 10d ago

Yeah, it got stuck in licensing hell. They can't even legally sell it anymore.

53

u/IceQ78 10d ago

I still have the disk. :D Remaster would be great.

19

u/Cheeme 9d ago

You might like BFME Reforged. It's a fan made remaster of the game.

Yeah I lost my disk 1 of 7 :P Sucks. I love that game.

2

u/pooplingpo 9d ago

It's findable as an online download

I don't know why you want a remaster of BFME 2 tho.

You see the games they regularily put out in the past few years? You really want them to ruin a good old RTS?

7

u/RazorCalahan 9d ago

Why not? Worst case scenario: The remaster sucks, so I don't buy it and nothing changed. Since this game has no oficially supported Multiplayer, there is no chance they could fuck this up so badly that it ruins the original as well (like Blizzard did with Warcraft 3), so I'd be cool with it.

2

u/LordKentravyon 9d ago

The C&C remaster a few years ago was top tier.

1

u/salemsbot6767 10d ago

Is this the couch co op one? I loved that game

8

u/QB796 9d ago

Bfme is a strategy game, still a game one can love!

AbandonWare us a real problem with franchises tied to influential estates.

27

u/AShadyAugur 10d ago

Check out Edain Mod! It's the closest we will get to BFME 3 and very true to the lore.

16

u/Trulapi 10d ago

Edain is great and all, but nothing even gets close to Age of the Ring.

10

u/domdom023 10d ago

All this is great, but nothing beats :

Third Age Total War

7

u/OblivionJunkie 10d ago

Divide and Conquer stepped it up even more

3

u/domdom023 10d ago

I respectfully disagree :)

3

u/OblivionJunkie 10d ago

Have you played it? Its a submod for third age

2

u/domdom023 10d ago

I did! That said, it has evolved in a prettyimpressive way since last time i played it 4 ish years ago

2

u/soverign_son 10d ago

Playing this right now in fact

I apologize for my pedantry, but it should be “should’ve (should have)” not “should of”. They do sound very similar, but “should of” doesn’t mean anything.

Also, now that I have satisfied my need to nit-pick, Battle for Middle Earth is fantastic and I wish we had another one.

12

u/TheSpoonJak92 10d ago

Sorry you're getting downvoted FOR BEING ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!

-13

u/ImpressiveAttempt0 10d ago

How to easily spot an American. I don't think anyone else outside the US makes the mistake of using "should of". They also 99% take offense when being corrected for their grammatical mistakes, however respectful & constructive that criticism is.

10

u/D-J97 9d ago

Visit any UK sub and you'll see the same grammatical error frequently, it's just a product of people not paying attention in school and texting how they speak.

138

u/PhoenixNightingale90 10d ago

I loved this game. The different factions felt so unique and fun to play.

Want some solid troops and potential for a massive industry? Isengard

Want some excellent cavalry and heroes? men of the west.

Frail but god tier archery? Elves

And if you want to go nuts with some Mumakil, attack trolls, and Nazgûl. Mordor.

73

u/Canes-305 10d ago

not to mention I think this was the one where you could create your own custom hero units to use in your armies which was really cool

27

u/thirdstachebro 10d ago

It was, and it also had characters from LOTR the Third Age game like Berethor if I remember right

10

u/Momoneymoproblems214 10d ago

Speaking of games to be remade. Like any of those old LOTR games deserve a remake. Heck bring back turn-based. I miss it...

1

u/smaug13 10d ago

Huh, I used to play the shit out of it but dont remember that feature at all

20

u/agnostic_waffle 10d ago

The thing I loved most was how the pros and cons of each unit type actually manifested visually on screen and gave you a reason to diversify your army and think tactically about how to approach a fight, they weren't just numbers working behind the scenes. Like you actually NEED each unit type for something if you want to destroy an enemy base, they don't simply do more or less damage they actually do different stuff and behave realistically. Horses will wreck most infantry (like actually full on trample them) but drop like flies against spearmen. You need infantry to serve as fodder and protect your archers/siege equipment or they'll be quickly overrun. Siege units do great splash damage but can hurt your own units as well, they're also the only real way to deal with buildings cause it takes like 10x longer to destroy a building using regular units.

18

u/MrPifo 9d ago

I loved the dwarfs, since they had the coolest lookinh buildings and I would spend hours just to build an awesome fort. I didnt even care about defeating the others, I just built my forts.

33

u/Caledoni 10d ago

Can’t believe you forgot goblins - ridiculously asymmetric race. Glass cannons like the elves but also… Dragon Hero… could take out bases pretty reliably if you got him up to a reasonable level.

7

u/PhoenixNightingale90 9d ago

They were the best at just overwhelming the opposition with sheer numbers as well.

u/Sharrty_McGriddle 10d ago

Literally all they have to do is make an open world rpg a la Elder Scrolls set in Middle Earth and people would buy it. Whosever decision it was to make a game centered around Gollum needs to be fired ASAP

10

u/Calcifair 9d ago

You do realise that a Skyrim type game would be an absolute massive undertaking for any studio right?

5

u/BeefStu4324 9d ago

It can't be, clearly just saying it should be made is enough for it to then exist.

3

u/BHTAelitepwn 9d ago

nah, bethesda did it like 15 times already. how hard can it be

3

u/Peacewalken 9d ago

"Skyrim type game" you mean and adventure rpg? They've been making them for years.

→ More replies (1)

28

u/Adammmmski 9d ago

You mean Lord of the Rings online?

Think Amazon are making an MMO tbf.

9

u/[deleted] 9d ago

I think they mean a single player open world like Skyrim.

24

u/Kurosu93 9d ago

This is true, Amazon is making a LOTR mmo.

However Amazon has proven with "new world" that it will be a mess.

A Single player open world RPG would be amazing but alas nobody is doing it

5

u/shortyman920 9d ago

They need this for Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. The money it’ll print..

2

u/animalbancho 9d ago

Literally all they have to do is (checks notes) tackle the hardest and most ambitious genre possible

If u guys want an underated lotr game try war in the north

Even better if u have 2 friends

22

u/Gigchip 10d ago

I never had a 3rd member for that party. It was always just my sister and I playing. But even after all this time, we still play it.

The focus has shifted from "let's make the greatest game and it will sell millions" to "how can we make the most money with the least amount of actual effort".

30

u/Your__Pal 10d ago

Technically, isn't a remaster significantly cheaper than a new game from the ground up ?

Even if that game is kind of trash ?

13

u/upvotesthenrages 10d ago

That’s exactly why we’re seeing so many remasters. Cheap guaranteed profits

0

u/RavenousToaster 10d ago

Well… yeah? That’s kinda the point of the profit motive

0

u/tocopito 9d ago

Hey I don’t like it either but that’s the rational thing to do under capitalism.

Or LotR: Conquest.

14

u/Full-Hollow-Tiche 10d ago

This. That game was so fun!

3

u/noThisIsIt 9d ago

I’d fund both personally

53

u/DaiCardman 10d ago

I preferred the first one, but the second of was amazing and you could make your own character than they would log his stats, i have a Troll with club that has like 50K+ kills.

20

u/Zjoee 10d ago

They should remake them both like they did with Age of Empires.

10

u/maricatu 10d ago

I remember my friends making an Aragorn-like or Gandalf-like hero every game, they were really broken

9

u/DaiCardman 10d ago

yeah the Wizards were extremely strong. i remember one of them had the same skill set has saruman and the fireballs destroyed stuff

7

u/OblivionJunkie 10d ago

The men of the west custom hero could one shot Sauron @ level 10 with max spear throw. Completely broken

3

u/Tokon32 10d ago

When Sarman would hit troops with his weapon, it was so satisfying watching hordes of troops go flying in the air.

So much fun invoking fucking tom bombadil into the map and just crushing everything.

-2

u/SomeIndividual1 9d ago

I was reading the book, and Bombadil is such a random unnecessary part of LotR its like a filler episode

23

u/SwoopzB 10d ago

I have the first one still installed. It’s abandonware so easy to find for free. Hop on every once in a while. No RTS game before or since has given me the same satisfaction as rolling over 100s of orcs with Rohan cav charges.

5

u/smaug13 10d ago

Really? That's great, I have been thinking about playing this again, and I had lost the DRM code to the game as a kid (to younger me's horror when I suddenly needed it again for a reason beyond younger me's understanding)

51

u/Strafordson 10d ago

The return of the king was my favorite LOTR game though.

14

u/requiemofchaos 10d ago

I legit associate the song "Requiem For a Dream" with Lord of the Rings more than its own namesake movie because of this game.

9

u/Zjoee 10d ago

My brother and I used to play that game so much haha.

2

u/Ohhellnowhatsupdawg 10d ago

My friend and I would play the Southern Gate and Minas Tirith levels over and over just to kill orcs. Lol

2

u/TheMagicStik 10d ago

It's mind numbing why this doesn't have an HD remake.

I'm out here just wanting to play The Third Age again...

4

u/BOYR4C3R 10d ago

LOTR final fantasy style was fucking way too epic for my 14yo brain. Especially after spending hundreds of hours playing FFX

28

u/massiveboner911 10d ago

That game was great

48

u/Zjoee 10d ago

My favorite thing was playing 1v3 on Helms Deep. So fun trying to hold the wall.

15

u/ThraxedOut Boardgames 10d ago

One time, I felt like a sadist and did Minas Tirith 1v5. The sheer amount of enemies to defeat was madness; constant pressure.

9

u/Zjoee 10d ago

Minas Tirith was crazy. I loved the lopsided maps.

25

u/OnlyPenguin 10d ago

True! Something about this generation of LOTR games really immersed you in middle earth.

18

u/Zjoee 10d ago

Also reminds me of LotR: Conquest, the one similar to the original Star Wars Battlefront 2. Another great game.

6

u/Cow_Interesting 10d ago

Holy shit I forgot about that game. I would love a modern version of that!

28

u/InflamedLiver 10d ago

I loved the Shadows of War/Mordor games but the sequel at the end was super grindy. I didn't mind playing not-Aragorn, but it would have been nice if you had more weapons like axes or spears. Or getting rid of having Captain enemies with an entire laundry-list of immunities. Ok, I guess this one is immune to... swords, arrows, stealth, fire, and poison. Weak to... strawberry jam and soft kisses?

5

u/Nop277 10d ago

The first one was amazing. The 2nd one seemed like it had the same good elements but they really fucked it up trying to slap MTX on a single player game.

11

u/StarWight_TTV 10d ago

no 2nd was MILES better than the first. I didn't find the game grindy at all, because I was actually having fun playing it.

0

u/OlTommyBombadil 10d ago

Why do gamers have to be so confrontational man

3

u/StarWight_TTV 10d ago

Maybe because you're posting your opinion on a PUBLIC forum where other people can also post their own? That's how this works; if you can't handle that, then don't post your opinions lol

-1

u/Nop277 10d ago

It might have been but the MTX just ruined it for me and a lot of people. I'm sure it would have been a real hit without it, I had been somewhat hyped for it when I heard the first was getting a sequel. When I heard it had MTX I instantly lost interest.

3

u/Tavarin 10d ago

I've player over a hundred hours of Shadow of War and not spent a single cent on MTX, and had a great time. The MTX are very much optional with the game, and easily avoided.

2

u/StarWight_TTV 10d ago

There are zero MTXs anymore, outside of DLC. And even when there were MTXs, they were completely optional and didn't ruin my fun. I just didn't purchase them.

-1

u/Nop277 10d ago

Yeah but there was MTX at launch and for quite a few months after. I know a lot of people decided to pass due to that, I'm sure they wouldn't have decided to remove it otherwise. The problem is that now the damage is done, I do want to play it and I think I even own it (picked up for pennies in a sale at one point) but since it missed its release window it gets thrown on the list of games I haven't got to yet which is a long list.

1

u/khinzaw 10d ago

They fixed that grindy bit later supposedly, but I played at launch and they actually had 0 anti cheat checks so I just used cheat engine to give myself a ton of the currency.

8

u/Matster777 10d ago

Yo just look up War of the Ring!!!!!

3

u/Zjoee 10d ago

Another great game! I loved that one too haha

14

u/K1LLAHCAM310 10d ago

One of the best RTS games of all time don’t even play with me - spend COUNTLESS hours on this

7

u/praisethesuntzu 10d ago

Would love to see more RTS games in general

3

u/Zjoee 10d ago

Same here. It's one of my favorite kinds of games.

3

u/brut3cnvntion 10d ago

One of the best games ever

4

u/Logondo 10d ago

It's karma for Shadows of Mordor/War.

We got a really good LOTR game (two, actually). So...now we get a really shitty one.

9

u/SeanC11 10d ago

They should make a Total War Middle Earth

1

u/Cow_Interesting 10d ago

Honestly surprised after the success of WH that this isn’t happening already.

3

u/Dr_Will_Kirby 10d ago

They will find a way to f this masterpiece up… you know im not wrong

1

u/Zjoee 10d ago

You're not wrong lol. I don't trust any of the big publishers these days.

3

u/Gigchip 10d ago

Expansion or remaster for war in the north. Was my favorite lotr game, that I still play to this day, and would love to have it get some love.

3

u/jovenatractivo 10d ago

I want to play now D:

3

u/AduroTri 10d ago

They need to make a third one. This game was awesome.

3

u/BillFromThaSwamp 10d ago

Fuck my ass that was a good game.

3

u/Sleyeme 10d ago

Absolute master class of a game!

It’s one those games I haven’t played in like 15 years and yet I find myself thinking about it still with a slight urge to play it.

3

u/himM_mAn 10d ago

Bruh this game was my childhood

3

u/NerdyBernie PC 10d ago

This was one of the last gems to come out of EA. Before the dark times. Before Battlefront.

3

u/owlexe23 9d ago

Tom Bombadil dancing and singing while stepping through armies of orcs, just amazing.

2

u/ThraxedOut Boardgames 10d ago

Dude, for real! Loved this game. The first one was really good as well!

2

u/TruShot5 10d ago

This was the best game at the time. I tried this again with various ROM bullshits and I just feel it has aged SOOO much. I’d would kill to play something like this again.

2

u/_Chumm 10d ago

I still keep my 360 around to play this. I've bought probably 4-5 copies of it over the years after scratching and otherwise destroying the previous copy because I'm a neanderthal.

2

u/Circumflexboy 10d ago

My childhood right there. This is what made me fall in love with the strategy game genre.

2

u/kain459 10d ago

Remaster Return of the King for steam.

2

u/Comfortablesub1988 10d ago

I got these games in when they first came out. When I moved out of my parents house they disappeared, I’ve never been so disappointed in my self for misplacing a game

2

u/Grundlestiltskin_ 10d ago

I never had a computer powerful enough to play this growing up. Can you still play it today?

1

u/Zjoee 10d ago

You can if you can get a ROM to work. Because of licensing issues, it can't legally be sold by anyone.

2

u/Saeryf 10d ago

Yeah, I've tried over the years to play it again (on PC this time, had it on 360 back in the day) but it doesn't work well.

I wish I could still play the 360 version.

2

u/Prudent-Shake-205 10d ago

I'd sell my precious to see a BFME 3 remake!

2

u/kemosabe19 10d ago

I remember when they first announced gollum and I was like who asked for this? Would have been more interesting to know what Sauron dreams were like.

2

u/Philepay 10d ago

LOTR total war would be pretty cool too. Almost anything would be better than that game we don't speak of.

2

u/MuffinHunter0511 10d ago

They could also make a new better installment of the shadow of Mordor series.

2

u/RingWraith8 10d ago

There's a group of creators remaster battle for middle earth. Don't tell ea. It's bfme reforged

2

u/Darth_Bane_66 10d ago

LOTR has two separate licenses for games. The games based on the Peter Jackson movies published by EA and the ones based on the books. The ones based on the books (Fellowship of the Ring and Hobbit from Xbox/GC/PS2) were pretty bad back in the day and the Gollum game falls in that camp of mediocre games based on the books instead of the movies.

2

u/doodlols 10d ago

EA no longer has the rights to LOTR and nobody but EA has the right to remaster it. It fuckin blows lol

2

u/Nawwalspirit 10d ago

I miss this game. Halo wars came close. But not the same

2

u/Odd_Advance_6438 10d ago

I just want them to make another Shadow of Mordor game

2

u/Necroniks_ 10d ago

I still have those games around here and from time to time i install them again to make an evil story run.

They still hold up pretty well even without the mods! If you have a physical copy of the game: KEEP IT!

2

u/Joedome 10d ago

I believe you can find these on either myabandonware or oldgamesdownload

2

u/Zhjacko 10d ago edited 10d ago

I was skimming through a compilation video of all the cutscenes of the Gollum Game & it seems like a half finished game. It just kinda ends. Not a lot going on, things don’t pick up. It seems like it would be an interesting game to at least experience and explore, but not with all the glitches and definitely not with the full price, no way would I pay $60 + for that, especially after reading the reviews and seeing gameplay. I think were it a $30 game, maybe the hate wouldn’t be as bad, but the full price tag seems insulting. Not sure what the Tolkien estate was thinking.

2

u/zekuert 10d ago

dont know if this is the right phrase but i liked the restricted settlement syle of the first game more

2

u/ChurroBear 10d ago

I'm not really sure what sounded so exciting about Gollum but the moment I heard about it my first thought was "well that's gonna suck"

2

u/thebochman 10d ago

2

u/NeedGamerGf 10d ago

You can download this game for free and there’s still a small group running servers for it. Check it out! here’s a link to get you started.

My buddy and I did this and it was so fun. The game holds up amazingly well. There’s also still campaign and skirmish if you don’t want to mess with online.

2

u/JJISHERE4U 10d ago

This game doesn't need a remake. The Age of The Ring mod offers everything you want from this game, with better graphics, way more content and more accurate lore than the original.

2

u/KingStannisForever 10d ago

You can play it for free and get Age of the Ring mod.

2

u/uk-side 9d ago

Swear I had a cracked version last time I played

"Close the gates!"

Favourite things cant remember if it was one or two was the balrog just to fun bringing that unit out and the character creator from bfme2 was epic to the kid I was

2

u/rhydmor 9d ago

I’m still hoping I can find a way to play mine on my pc, it doesn’t seem to work on windows 10 😔

1

u/Zjoee 9d ago

Try going to the installation folder, go into the properties of the .exe file, and select Windows 7 for compatibility mode. Maybe that will help?

2

u/rhydmor 9d ago

I’ve already tried that, nothing works 😕. It’s the same issue all the time, it starts up then when the small window showing the title of the game I click play and it says ‘please insert correct dvd into dvd rom drive’.

2

u/TheNinjaDC 9d ago

This and the 40k games are the reason I type with one hand. One hand always in the keyboard, the other the mouse.

It conditioned me in my youth, lol.

1

u/Zjoee 9d ago

I still regularly play 40k Dawn of War: Soulstorm. One of my favorite rts games. I love the conquest campaign.

2

u/Django8200 9d ago

They are stupid idiots not making THIS GEM instead. It will easily rival AOE4

2

u/Embarrassed_Key9829 8d ago

Never tried where can I get the game?

1

u/Zjoee 8d ago

Unfortunately, the only way to play this game these days is to buy a used copy somewhere or download a ROM. It can't be sold digitally anymore because of licensing issues.

2

u/Embarrassed_Key9829 7d ago

Oho then I will download

2

u/ProDiesel 10d ago

One of the best rts ever made. It's even better because it is game made on a movie (yeah I know about books lol, but let's be honest here...) and most of such games are total craps. And this one is excellent!

1

u/Rokovar 10d ago

BFME 2 is still very playable tbh, no remaster needed

2

u/Zjoee 10d ago

Yeah, but a way to get it officially would be nice. It's annoying having to jump through hoops in order to install it.

1

u/OlTommyBombadil 10d ago

I just want an open world LOTR RPG

Maybe before I die

0

u/Shadowbenny1 10d ago

I mean, would they make a lot of money? I feel like most people would pirate it or wait for it to be Free on Epic Games or something.

5

u/Zjoee 10d ago

I think they would make a good bit of money off of it. Just look at the success of the Age of Empires remakes. BfME2 wasn't quite as big as AoE, but it was still an excellent RTS game. The only way to play it these days is to pirate it thanks to licensing.

1

u/Shadowbenny1 10d ago

I apologize, I realized after I commented that the tone wasn't what I intended it to be. I had meant to be a bit facetious. I do agree with you and wouldn't mind seeing a remake to this game. I was excited for Warcraft 3 Reborn (or whatever it was) but I refuse to give Blizzard any more money lol.

It's all good, it can be hard to get meaning from text sometimes. I just want to see more RTS games made. I love Age of Mythology and Dawn of War. Battle for Middle Earth 2 is another of my favorites. I loved the original Warcraft 3, but I've had too many bad things about the remake.

I'm playing Civ 6 these days, along with Bloons and DotA2.

I love Bloons haha. I'm between games at the moment. I'm looking forward to Street Fighter 6 next Friday.

On god who in tf wants to play a Gollum game? The gaming industry is gonna crash here soon for a lot of reasons, this being one of them.

As much as I love this game, RTS games are more niche and not really a money printer.

If they really wanna make money, a Bethesda style open world RPG would fit perfectly.

Also, I’d love to see a Stardew Valley style farming game set in the Shire.

I would waste my life away playing a LotR open world rpg.

I guess this new MMO is my best bet for now.

I understand where you're coming from, but the last thing we need are more remasters.

Too many companies are trying to cash in on nostalgia while almost none of them successfully remaster a game. The current working coders, who had nothing to do with the game you loved, will 1. Never recreate an old game perfectly, and 2. Almost always try to put their own "touch" into it.

At best, the game is what used to be, but with better graphics, and at the worst, it's just a shit remake that hardly resembles the original.

Remastered games are shit. I will always prefer to play the original whenever possible.

I am not sure about rts genre in modern gaming. I mean, how could you monetize this game? Publishers are humans too, they want new yachts and more cocaine, and you stupid gamers suggest making games that can't impliment loot boxes, battle passes and pre-order bonuses?

Won't someone please think about the poor shareholders?

My hot take is that BFME1 was better.

They can't. EA doesn't and hasn't had the license for years.

u/Zjoee 10d ago

I know, that's the problem. It's stuck in licensing hell, so they can't even sell it as is.

I'm more interested in the PS2 lord of the rings games.

Did anyone ever play the Total War mod for Lord of the Rings? That was fire

I feel like I'm a minority here..but seriously.. fuck remasters... I'd rather a studio take a chance with a game and it doesn't do well than just remake or remaster a game I stopped playing 20 years ago.

Got it from gameFly years ago when I still had a GameCube. It's the only game I wish that I lied to the company to keep it.
