If they want to make a bunch of money using the Lord of the Rings franchise, just remaster this game! Instead, we get games like Gollum...

u/PhoenixNightingale90 10d ago
I loved this game. The different factions felt so unique and fun to play.
Want some solid troops and potential for a massive industry? Isengard
Want some excellent cavalry and heroes? men of the west.
Frail but god tier archery? Elves
And if you want to go nuts with some Mumakil, attack trolls, and Nazgûl. Mordor.
73
u/Canes-305 10d ago
not to mention I think this was the one where you could create your own custom hero units to use in your armies which was really cool
27
u/thirdstachebro 10d ago
It was, and it also had characters from LOTR the Third Age game like Berethor if I remember right
10
u/Momoneymoproblems214 10d ago
Speaking of games to be remade. Like any of those old LOTR games deserve a remake. Heck bring back turn-based. I miss it...
20
u/agnostic_waffle 10d ago
The thing I loved most was how the pros and cons of each unit type actually manifested visually on screen and gave you a reason to diversify your army and think tactically about how to approach a fight, they weren't just numbers working behind the scenes. Like you actually NEED each unit type for something if you want to destroy an enemy base, they don't simply do more or less damage they actually do different stuff and behave realistically. Horses will wreck most infantry (like actually full on trample them) but drop like flies against spearmen. You need infantry to serve as fodder and protect your archers/siege equipment or they'll be quickly overrun. Siege units do great splash damage but can hurt your own units as well, they're also the only real way to deal with buildings cause it takes like 10x longer to destroy a building using regular units.

u/Caledoni 10d ago
Can’t believe you forgot goblins - ridiculously asymmetric race. Glass cannons like the elves but also… Dragon Hero… could take out bases pretty reliably if you got him up to a reasonable level.

They were the best at just overwhelming the opposition with sheer numbers as well.

The attack trolls were a lot better in BFME 1 though. In that they were completely overpowered.
116
u/Sharrty_McGriddle 10d ago
Literally all they have to do is make an open world rpg a la Elder Scrolls set in Middle Earth and people would buy it. Whosever decision it was to make a game centered around Gollum needs to be fired ASAP
10
u/Calcifair 9d ago
You do realise that a Skyrim type game would be an absolute massive undertaking for any studio right?
5
u/BeefStu4324 9d ago
It can't be, clearly just saying it should be made is enough for it to then exist.

"Skyrim type game" you mean and adventure rpg? They've been making them for years.

u/Adammmmski 9d ago
You mean Lord of the Rings online?
Think Amazon are making an MMO tbf.
9
24
u/Kurosu93 9d ago
This is true, Amazon is making a LOTR mmo.
However Amazon has proven with "new world" that it will be a mess.
A Single player open world RPG would be amazing but alas nobody is doing it

Technically, isn't a remaster significantly cheaper than a new game from the ground up ?
Even if that game is kind of trash ?

That’s exactly why we’re seeing so many remasters. Cheap guaranteed profits

I have the first one still installed. It’s abandonware so easy to find for free. Hop on every once in a while. No RTS game before or since has given me the same satisfaction as rolling over 100s of orcs with Rohan cav charges.

u/ThraxedOut Boardgames 10d ago
One time, I felt like a sadist and did Minas Tirith 1v5. The sheer amount of enemies to defeat was madness; constant pressure.
25
u/OnlyPenguin 10d ago
True! Something about this generation of LOTR games really immersed you in middle earth.
18
u/Zjoee 10d ago
Also reminds me of LotR: Conquest, the one similar to the original Star Wars Battlefront 2. Another great game.
6
u/Cow_Interesting 10d ago
Holy shit I forgot about that game. I would love a modern version of that!
28
u/InflamedLiver 10d ago
I loved the Shadows of War/Mordor games but the sequel at the end was super grindy. I didn't mind playing not-Aragorn, but it would have been nice if you had more weapons like axes or spears. Or getting rid of having Captain enemies with an entire laundry-list of immunities. Ok, I guess this one is immune to... swords, arrows, stealth, fire, and poison. Weak to... strawberry jam and soft kisses?
5
u/Nop277 10d ago
The first one was amazing. The 2nd one seemed like it had the same good elements but they really fucked it up trying to slap MTX on a single player game.
11
u/StarWight_TTV 10d ago
no 2nd was MILES better than the first. I didn't find the game grindy at all, because I was actually having fun playing it.
0
u/OlTommyBombadil 10d ago
Why do gamers have to be so confrontational man
3
u/StarWight_TTV 10d ago
Maybe because you're posting your opinion on a PUBLIC forum where other people can also post their own? That's how this works; if you can't handle that, then don't post your opinions lol
-1
u/Nop277 10d ago
It might have been but the MTX just ruined it for me and a lot of people. I'm sure it would have been a real hit without it, I had been somewhat hyped for it when I heard the first was getting a sequel. When I heard it had MTX I instantly lost interest.
3
2
u/StarWight_TTV 10d ago
There are zero MTXs anymore, outside of DLC. And even when there were MTXs, they were completely optional and didn't ruin my fun. I just didn't purchase them.
-1
u/Nop277 10d ago
Yeah but there was MTX at launch and for quite a few months after. I know a lot of people decided to pass due to that, I'm sure they wouldn't have decided to remove it otherwise. The problem is that now the damage is done, I do want to play it and I think I even own it (picked up for pennies in a sale at one point) but since it missed its release window it gets thrown on the list of games I haven't got to yet which is a long list.

u/RingWraith8 10d ago
There's a group of creators remaster battle for middle earth. Don't tell ea. It's bfme reforged
2
u/Darth_Bane_66 10d ago
LOTR has two separate licenses for games. The games based on the Peter Jackson movies published by EA and the ones based on the books. The ones based on the books (Fellowship of the Ring and Hobbit from Xbox/GC/PS2) were pretty bad back in the day and the Gollum game falls in that camp of mediocre games based on the books instead of the movies.
2
u/doodlols 10d ago
EA no longer has the rights to LOTR and nobody but EA has the right to remaster it. It fuckin blows lol

I still have those games around here and from time to time i install them again to make an evil story run.
They still hold up pretty well even without the mods! If you have a physical copy of the game: KEEP IT!

u/Zhjacko 10d ago edited 10d ago
I was skimming through a compilation video of all the cutscenes of the Gollum Game & it seems like a half finished game. It just kinda ends. Not a lot going on, things don’t pick up. It seems like it would be an interesting game to at least experience and explore, but not with all the glitches and definitely not with the full price, no way would I pay $60 + for that, especially after reading the reviews and seeing gameplay. I think were it a $30 game, maybe the hate wouldn’t be as bad, but the full price tag seems insulting. Not sure what the Tolkien estate was thinking.

u/ChurroBear 10d ago
I'm not really sure what sounded so exciting about Gollum but the moment I heard about it my first thought was "well that's gonna suck"

You can download this game for free and there’s still a small group running servers for it. Check it out! here’s a link to get you started.
My buddy and I did this and it was so fun. The game holds up amazingly well. There’s also still campaign and skirmish if you don’t want to mess with online.

This game doesn't need a remake. The Age of The Ring mod offers everything you want from this game, with better graphics, way more content and more accurate lore than the original.

I’m still hoping I can find a way to play mine on my pc, it doesn’t seem to work on windows 10 😔

u/Zjoee 9d ago
Try going to the installation folder, go into the properties of the .exe file, and select Windows 7 for compatibility mode. Maybe that will help?
2
u/rhydmor 9d ago
I’ve already tried that, nothing works 😕. It’s the same issue all the time, it starts up then when the small window showing the title of the game I click play and it says ‘please insert correct dvd into dvd rom drive’.

One of the best rts ever made. It's even better because it is game made on a movie (yeah I know about books lol, but let's be honest here...) and most of such games are total craps. And this one is excellent!

u/Rokovar 10d ago

I mean, would they make a lot of money? I feel like most people would pirate it or wait for it to be Free on Epic Games or something.
5
u/Zjoee 10d ago
I think they would make a good bit of money off of it. Just look at the success of the Age of Empires remakes. BfME2 wasn't quite as big as AoE, but it was still an excellent RTS game. The only way to play it these days is to pirate it thanks to licensing.
1
u/Shadowbenny1 10d ago
I apologize, I realized after I commented that the tone wasn't what I intended it to be. I had meant to be a bit facetious. I do agree with you and wouldn't mind seeing a remake to this game. I was excited for Warcraft 3 Reborn (or whatever it was) but I refuse to give Blizzard any more money lol.
2
u/Zjoee 10d ago
It's all good, it can be hard to get meaning from text sometimes. I just want to see more RTS games made. I love Age of Mythology and Dawn of War. Battle for Middle Earth 2 is another of my favorites. I loved the original Warcraft 3, but I've had too many bad things about the remake.

As much as I love this game, RTS games are more niche and not really a money printer.
If they really wanna make money, a Bethesda style open world RPG would fit perfectly.
Also, I’d love to see a Stardew Valley style farming game set in the Shire.

I understand where you're coming from, but the last thing we need are more remasters.
Too many companies are trying to cash in on nostalgia while almost none of them successfully remaster a game. The current working coders, who had nothing to do with the game you loved, will 1. Never recreate an old game perfectly, and 2. Almost always try to put their own "touch" into it.
At best, the game is what used to be, but with better graphics, and at the worst, it's just a shit remake that hardly resembles the original.
Remastered games are shit. I will always prefer to play the original whenever possible.
-1
u/SnooMarzipans4961 10d ago
I am not sure about rts genre in modern gaming. I mean, how could you monetize this game? Publishers are humans too, they want new yachts and more cocaine, and you stupid gamers suggest making games that can't impliment loot boxes, battle passes and pre-order bonuses?
