Yea saw the price tag, decided to just play botw again, beat it in 5 days, got my fix.
I understand that the price tag is fine for some players but supporting a base price of $70 will just make every other game move to that price. Looks fun but a week of gaming isn't worth the $70 for me.
Edit: a bunch of you seem upset over my personally decision. I'm not telling anyone to not buy the game. I'm just choosing not to and that's okay.

u/HHcougar 9d ago
I bought games for $60 in 2005.
$70 in 2023 is far cheaper.
With inflation that game in '05 cost the equivalent to $93 dollars today.
Making some moral stance that you won't "support" a natural price increase (which happens with every product) is dumb.
Video games have never been cheaper, and a price hike to $70 really doesn't change that.
16
u/Sir_Stash 9d ago
There were a few SNES games that went for $70 in the 90's. Not a lot, but a few.
Console prices have soared, but games have stayed static in their retail prices. Complaining over a highly anticipated game costing $10 more than the typical game doesn't make sense to me.

I spent months cutting grass to buy Bubsy for $75 from Toys R Us. It was lame and I forced myself to like it. I don't wanna hear shit from you Rugrats.

In some retail stores, in germany atleast, you can get your self a copy for 60€. Thats why i drove to the next MediaMarkt and bought one. 70€ are just to much to justifiy for me at the Moment.

Good for you. It’s $89 in Canada and I’ve made the same choice. I’ll play it when it goes on sale in a few years.

for me was when i found out the weapon breaking mechanic was still in the game.
BoTW was a great game that i couldn't be arsed to finish because that kept pissing me off so much.
3
u/kintorkaba 9d ago
They kinda-sorta fixed it, not just mechanically but in terms of how the whole game feels aesthetically.
Mechanically you have a new "fuse" power that allows you to strap items and weapons onto each other. This has the added benefit of, in some cases, transferring all durability damage to the attached weapon/item. This allows you to keep your base weapon, if you take care of it and remember to swap out when the attached item breaks. It also means you can turn regular swords or sticks into axes, hammers, etc, just by sticking rocks and other items to the end of them.
Aesthetically all the powers work together to create a really improvised feel to everything. Where in BotW, I just felt like... "Why do all my swords keep breaking oh my god can I just get a good iconic weapon like it's a fucking zelda game?!" ... in TotK, it's more like "Scavenger Link is a fucking badass, I glued a flamethrower on my sword."
I absolutely HATED it in BotW, but in this one it feels... right. BotW forced you to play like a scavenger, but its mechanics didn't really justify it. With TotK it feels like they've finally justified the scavenger playstyle for this version of Link... maybe even made it iconic for this iteration.

u/itswatev 9d ago
I mean, fuse is cool and all, but honestly breaking a cool fused weapon I had feels even worse now IMO. I think it feels exactly the same, except now I'm just losing a weapon + an item I fused to it..

Or, because it's actually good, it will be a new standard that other games need to meet to price at $70, and force the quality of games up

u/Moser319 9d ago
Your choice, but i've put 80 hours into it and there's still tons of game left to do.

I hate to break this to you but $70 for flagship and triple A titles is not the future, but the present.

I have 6 hearts. 2 whole stamina rings. Beat the rito storm arc quest. 30+ hrs. I don't know what's going on, but I'm having a blast. Got lost under hyrule castle. Forgot I could ascend my way out😅
16
u/MajinBuuMan 9d ago
That has to be my favorite ability.
Entering a random cave then just ascending out to a random ass place in the world. Sometimes on top of a mountain.
7
u/temujinbk 9d ago
This morning I entered a well, immediately got surrounded by monsters, and beamed my way to safety. I love that they built a cheat into the game.
1
u/SethTheWarrior 9d ago
well i mean basically all 4 abilities let you cheat in different scenarios
recall can trivialize several shrines if paired with ultrahand properly

I wandered around the depths for like an hour and found a spot to ascend out of, came out of the ground in the middle of an enemy stronghold. Had a good laugh cuz it had that record scratch vibe real hard

When I first got to the Depths, I didn't know you could just fast travel out. I was looking for places to ascend for like an hour before I googled it lol

u/booksandmints 9d ago
Too many, and I’m still squishy because I keep thinking “ooh, what’s over there?” instead of doing any quests or concentrating on shrines!
::edit:: forgot a word!
6
u/mollekake_reddit 9d ago
They really nailed that part of the game. Botw was not as explorative and inviting. Makes the world seem littered with quests and mysteries.
6
u/booksandmints 9d ago
I think they did too. I love the addition of caves and wells for the extra exploration, plus it’s always cool to ascend really high up a mountain from a deep cave!
3
u/mollekake_reddit 9d ago
Absolutely agree! I love jumping from the highest spots all the way down to the underground.

I put in over 80 hours in the first 7 days.
I literally had to stop myself, because this game was just consuming my life.
One day I played it 14 hours straight and it felt like 3 lol
Game came and a complete low point in my life- and has actually made me significantly happier because I could just tune out all of the bullshit in my life for a week straight
This game so damn good that it made me slightly less depressed.

About 5 hours. Simply being I just didn’t enjoy the game. Objectively I think the game makes some awesome technical leaps, especially with how the physics work. However… as someone who sunk a good 500 hours into Breath of the Wild… I don’t know, I guess I didn’t really click with it?
It bugged me that as soon as I reached Hyrule everything just looked a bit samey. Obviously same graphics, lots of the same reused sounds and ambient music in some cases. I got to the Purah lookout part and just put it down, I just don’t think I could really go through another 100 hours minimum journey through a similar looking/feeling adventure.
However, don’t get the wrong idea. Just because I do not like this game, does not mean others aren’t allowed to like it. In fact, I’m extremely happy people find the game attractive and fun to play. I’m ecstatic that Nintendo pulled off another big success, and I’m happy to have supported them with my purchase all the same. :)

I'm hundred and something hours in completed most of the main quests so now I'm working on finishing collecting hearts and stamina and side quests before completing the game.

2
u/Mercys_Angel 9d ago
50 hours. Beat the main story and a couple big side quests. I don’t really have much interest in continuing to play more but I’m happy with the time I had with the game

u/Plebecide 9d ago
0, all the fortnite car building nonsense I've seen really turned me off from buying it
2
u/Sushisource 9d ago
FYI I was worried about that as well and it is not terribly pervasive in the game. So far the only times you really need to use it are at the beginning of the game when they show you how, and in some shrines. It's really not as important as media you've seen maybe make it look.
Having a blast with the game.

100% felt same as this. Don’t really care about building but I got it as a gift and you can play 90/95% of the game without bothering with the whole building thing. Finding it Vgood so far.

Did the Goron temple and I'm making my way to the bird people temple.
All my free gaming time is going exclusively to Zelda lol.

I ended up doing the Wind Temple before the Fire Temple and boy, the Fire Temple was almost too easy in comparison. Ymmv, maybe I just suck at paragliding lol

About 10 and then got super bored because it's the same thing over and over again with a shoestring narrative.

u/sugmamale69420 9d ago
what exactly is "the same thing over and over"?
2
u/-csephus- 8d ago edited 8d ago
Over 150 shrines, the same number of roots down below, all replay the same activation animation and music. 900 korok seeds. A tower for every region with the exact same activation animation and music. Tons of that sign dude. Enemy encounters copy & pasted across the map. Tons of wells. Tons of cave systems that end with those glowing lizards. Collectible memories are back with the same activation animation and music.
I'm many hours in and am having a net positive experience, but there will never be a case that this gameplay loop doesn't repeat almost everything at least a dozen times.
0
u/sugmamale69420 8d ago
You can skip animations, and you're not required to do any shrines after the great plateau.
I understand, that if you want more hearts and stamina you need to do shrines, but that's the price you pay for this overworld because it's different than other Zelda games where you get hearts mainly from completing temples

Too many, but been working normal hours still.
I've done 3 of the town quests, have a full line of hearts and 2 1/5 stamina wheels, and just found the master sword.
Still hunting armour peices, I want to try and find the knight armour again, liked the look, but I also appreciate bits simply effect of just having really good defence.

Not a fan of Zelda games. Seems to be for kids.
2
u/sakipooh 9d ago
Like you've never played a Mario game because it's cartoonish and colorful? How about Mario kart? What is an adult video game? Only games rated M for mature? Does a title need gratuitous violence and blood?
I'm just genuinely curious as I bet I'm far older than you (with a house, wife and kid) and we still all enjoy the crap out of all these games. The wife has her own Switch and copy of TOTK and even my 65 year old mother has her own with probably more hours in this game than me as she's retired.

Just cause the game isn't rendered on a 4080ipx XTreme deluxxxe graphics card with photo realistic graphics, doesn't mean the game is for kids.
It's brutally difficult, and has really challenging puzzles.
I could never have played it as a kid.

200 hours and in pretty freaking annoyed with how much content in the game has rupees as a reward. Full blown quest chains that take hours - 100 rupees. I've 100% breath of the wild like 3 times - I don't know if I'll ever 100% this it has an ungodly amount of cut/copy/paste filler - maybe 10x as much as the last game.
