Even As A Doom 1&2 Junkie, I Still Like It
How do you feel?

u/StarWarsDad11 9d ago
This and Half-Life were my jams!

u/this_barb 9d ago
Same, playing this and Half-Life 3 were a hallmark of my teenage years.

The Overwatch subreddit is in meltdown about them cancelling a PvE mode and I just want to go in there screaming about Half Life 3.

I appreciate the direction ID went here. Good, but different, entry in the franchise. Although, I prefer Doom 2016 and Eternal.
11
u/asevans1717 9d ago
2016 more than eternal for me. I still play doom 2 wads every week though it's GOAT for me
5
u/Dopest_Bogey 9d ago
Have you played Going Down? It's a must play wad made by the nightmarish fever dream YouTube animator "Cyriak" has an awesome theme each level is a masterpiece and the soundtrack is NUTS.

Oh wow haven’t heard his name in years , that’s a cool suprise that he makes wads

Have you played MyHouse.wad?
1
u/Dopest_Bogey 8d ago
Yes but I didn't beat it. Although I watched Decino play it a bit further than I did. It's super cool but a little slow paced for my liking.

This game was beautiful when it first came out. Having to choose between gun or flashlight made it too scary for me to finish.

I’ve been replaying it in VR. It’s a very good game if you can appreciate it for what it is. It’s a departure from 1 & 2, but pretty phenomenal even now.

I grew up with all three games, so I'll always have a soft spot for this one. It helps I'm a horror fan, and two of my all-time favorites are Alien and Event Horizon.

I didn't appreciate it as a kid so I came back to it years later and fell in love. At the time it was a hard change to accept but man, I enjoyed the frequent scares this gave me.
2
u/asevans1717 9d ago
I've been playing the expansion and when I hear the whispers I still get scared
4
u/Orodruin666 9d ago
Didn't enjoy it as much as the first 2 Dooms, but I'm still glad they tried to do something new. I much prefer a company taking risks and trying new things than playing it safe and releasing the same old generic shit.
4
u/asevans1717 9d ago
Yeah companies dont do that anymore. I agree though Ive been replaying ol' Doom 2 classic wads like requiem and memento Mori
3
u/Mysterious_Fennel459 9d ago
Eh, i still liked Doom64 the best.
2
u/asevans1717 9d ago
I like the atmosphere of that game. I wish it had mouselook though, because I love to study the environments
3
u/RogerOtter 8d ago
Now that it has been rereleased following Doom Eternal, I'm sure there's a mod somewhere on PC to add mouse look.
2
u/Cathesdus 8d ago
Pretty sure mouselook works natively. Fair warning though, since the game was designed for a gamepad, playing it with mouse and keyboard make it significantly easier. I played through it on the highest difficulty setting. Still an absolute blast.
3
u/ThePLARASociety 9d ago
This is probably a bad analogy but to me it was almost a little bit like Resident Evil meets DOOM. It’s like a Survival/FPS because the amount of enemies on screen at once was very small. You got a good deal of ammo though. It was very dark and claustrophobic inducing which was also a very cool thing.
3
u/asevans1717 9d ago
Yeah but towards the end you start feeling like Doomguy and it's pretty transcendent
3
u/BlueDragonRR 9d ago
It wasn't a bad game, just didn't fit well into the series as a whole. Kinda like Black Flag in the AC series.
1
u/asevans1717 9d ago
Yeah. I have occasionally found the 1 old-timer on doom 3 multiplayer and it's lit

u/al3ch316 9d ago
I liked it, but did it feel like a Doom game? Not really.
It was Doom-adjacent, but it was too much mood and too little action, IMO. But as a graphical showcase for your PC at the time, it's right up there with the O/G Crysis. You literally couldn't build a PC that would run this game at max settings when it released.
12
u/BlueMikeStu 9d ago
Not only that, but on the OG Xbox it was literal magic compared to other games from the time.
4
u/asevans1717 9d ago
Yeah I originally got it for Xbox at launch(came with a pewter Baron of Hell figurine) and it was the greatest looking thing I had ever seen
15
u/NaughtyPwny 9d ago
I dunno why people say this. The further you get in the game, the more the action ramps up to be just like how Doom was.
8
u/RIP_lime_skittle 9d ago edited 9d ago
It’s basically slow doom. All the same shoot and dodge projectile mechanics are still there but everyone just moves slower. The action does ramp up quite a bit, much like the first two games where they start pretty chill and get increasingly chaotic.
1
u/ioncloud9 8d ago
It was a maze you had to fight through to get to the macguffin and then fight your way back after you got it to move on to the next area.
2
u/Arpadiam 9d ago
I love it and i love the community behind it keeping alive this game with tons of addons, Mod packs, stand alone packs and so much more
it have become a cult classic game as the Stalker IP

Doom 3 is the best narrative experience that the Doom games have ever had. I will die on this hill. It may not be the best in the series but by far the most engaging.

2
u/therealjoshua 9d ago
Man, I can still remember the "why can't your gun have a light on it / why do you have to hold a flashlight separately?" controversy when this came out
2
u/asevans1717 9d ago
BFG fixed that and the game is so easy it's a joke
2
u/therealjoshua 9d ago
Yup! I remember that being one of the selling points of that edition.
1
u/asevans1717 9d ago
I find it more fun, because you can still sprint I'm doom 3, very slowly, but it's hilarious seeing the monsters behave when before you couldn't see them
2
u/NaughtyPwny 9d ago
How could you not, one of my favs growing up. I like to think of it as the Doom Carmack always wanted to create and finally did.
1
u/asevans1717 9d ago
Ultimately as a vision yeah. I'm an iD software junkie so I might have Stockholm syndrome
2
u/SjurEido 9d ago
Doom 3 captured something that I don't think has been replicated since... a really great marriage of horror and heavy metal. Doom 2016 and Eternal abandoned the horror aspect, but they are obviously top tier games.
Dead Space 1 and 2 come close, but lack in the badassery department.
I hope for a true spiritual successor to Doom 3, and I hope NIN writes the music for it :)
2
u/PremDhillon 8d ago
Still hurt on them moving towards a more Arcady style with the new DOOMs. Want a doom 3 esque game so bad.
2
2
u/Oseirus 8d ago
It was one of my favorite shooters from that era. The graphics were revolutionary, the guns were all punchy and fun, and it had some moments that made me poo myself a little.
I can see why some folks are ho-hum about it from a Doom perspective, but it's still an excellent game. BFG Edition especially cleaned up a few of the biggest gripes people had.
1
2
u/JuanJuanAbrams 9d ago
It would have been better if they duck tape the flashlight to the damn gun.
6
u/NaughtyPwny 9d ago
I loved having to switch back and forth and seeing the environment/enemies light up from the gunfire. It made a great horror experience back then.
4
u/Meggers1048576 9d ago
Same. I've been watching people complain about that forever and I've always argued it's a great game mechanic...forcing you to switch between seeing and shooting...it built a lot of tension.
5
u/MannyLaMancha 9d ago
Yeah! Going dark and then having to go off of what the muzzle flashes illuminate.
4
2
u/baaya88 9d ago
I was really hoping they continued the creepy atmosphere of 3 moving forward, but I guess people didn’t find it fun for some reason.
1
u/asevans1717 9d ago
Like I said before, at the mid-end of doom 3 you become the slayer just like the other games, you just earn it
3
u/BlueMikeStu 9d ago
I would have liked it better as not a Doom game.
It wanted to be Doom and Half-Life at the same time, and failed at both. Especially the original release which gets glossed over thanks to the many QOL improvements we've seen with rereleases.
4
u/asevans1717 9d ago
I feel like I still like it more than Quake IV though.
3
u/BlueMikeStu 9d ago
That just damned it by faint praise.
1
u/asevans1717 9d ago
Lmao. I still have a soft spot for D3, Quake 4, and Prey. I can't really replay modern games like I can the older ones.
1
u/olejimmywilson 9d ago
If I'm not mistaken, it was supposed to be a survival horror game like on a island where your plane crashed? Or maybe that was before they started on doom 4.
1
u/BranislavBGD 9d ago edited 9d ago
Still oneof my all-time favorites. Hugely atmospheric gem that deserves a modern remake.
I remember modding the absolute living SHIT out of it too!

u/GonzoThompson 9d ago
Oculus Quest owners: there’s a homebrew VR version and it is excellent - a great mix of terrifying and fun. It comes highly recommended. Look up “Team Beef” to find this and other VR conversion projects.

u/Ebolatastic 9d ago edited 9d ago
I thought it was 10/10 on my first playthrough. Over the next decade, I developed a lot of criticism towards it. Now, I think about it fondly and desire a replay to guage it once more. I find, as time goes on, so many examples of older games (especially horror) whose rougher edges actually work in their favor (Silent Hill 2, Dead Rising 1, etc). Death Strandings whole journey from polarizing to praise walked on this principle.
In regards to Doom 3, I grew to dislike it's manipulative design, hard lean into atmospheric/survival horror, and lack of multiplayer/sandbox tools. The releases of 2016 and Eternal have made me not so bothered by that anymore. I couldn't tell you what I would think now.

Fuck the shotgun in this game. One of the biggest pieces of RNG that screwed me over so many times. Doom 3 is awesome still.
1
u/GamingSlavDanger 9d ago
It was my first game that really looked realistic and scary. It is a shame Doom games later did not continue this raw dark style.

u/ImpressiveAttempt0 9d ago
Still waiting for the official Doom 3 RTX edition. If any game can convince me that RTX is a must have, this might be it.

u/UncomfortableReview PlayStation 9d ago
Oddly enough I enjoyed every Doom including three, but I really couldn't tick with Doom Eternal.

u/DdCno1 8d ago
There's an interesting "missing link" between Doom 2 and Doom 3: Doom 64. It combines the gameplay of classic Doom with a much more dark and sinister atmosphere that is far closer to Doom 3. This title used to be stuck on the N64, but has since been ported to PC and other platforms, first by fans and now officially.

I need to get to the rest of the DOOM games, I've only played DOOM 64 and DOOM Eternal, liked both of 'em but Eternal kinda lost me at the end, DOOM 64 lost me at the final boss :P

As someone who didn’t get around to the Doom games until the mid 2010s and played 3 right after 1 and 2, there’s things I like about it, but I think it has a lot of issues, even judging it entirely on it’s own merits. I do actually really enjoy the tone and stylings of the game (love how genuinely evil all the hell stuff feels), but I think the gameplay ended up as kind of an awkward halfway between survival horror design and action shooter design. It just feels too slow to me, and the combat itself doesn’t feel like it has much variety in practice.
Also I really don’t like most of the sound design for weapons and things and then I see people raving about it and I feel like I’m losing my fucking mind. (The PLASMA GUN is one of your favorite sounding weapons ever? Really? The fucking Jetsons “pew pew pew” gun?)

This game kept my butthole clenched the entire time! I really enjoyed that it was different from the regular doom games. I love the originals, but this was fun, and the dlc was interesting. The gun that stopped time gave it a new element. The ambient noises kept you on your toes. You never knew what was coming around the corner. I was on edge the entire time. Definitely play with headphones in itll fuck with you. There was more of a story, too. I enjoyed creeping around instead of running and gunning. I had a lot of oh shit moments.

u/Dynamitrios 8d ago
Best entry in the franchise... Horror oriented and not the silly platforming the came after
1
u/Technical-Cable-1361 8d ago
Looks like we have a Doom 3 fan in the house! I'll make sure to keep my flashlight handy.
1
u/Arosian-Knight 8d ago
Doom 3 had imo the best Hell Knight. Hulking brute of pure muscle and hatred. The intro that introduced Hell knights was pure horror when the SECOND one came from the teleporter.
1
u/RogerOtter 8d ago
Honestly, Doom 3 ain't a bad game. As a part of the Doom universe, it is not the best game that's for sure, but it's far from the shitshow some paint the game as.

Bought the entire doom collection on steam a year ago...while I had a great time with the O.G Dooms and the new Dooms... Doom 3 is one of my best gaming experiences ever.
Play in the dark. Use headphones. Don't use the quicksaves - try to complete the whole level in one go. Marine difficulty.
That's the way.

u/Chris_RB 8d ago
Doom 3 was my intro to the Doom world and while I appreciate Doom (2016) and Eternal, I love my moody “do you want to shoot or see” baby.

I think time has been kind to it, especially since we have gotten new DOOM games since.
But at the time it was a complete abomination, had nothing to do with the spirit of doom, it just wasn't DOOM. Just a slow, dark, pretty looking game with an over reliance on jumpscares

Monster Closet Jump Scare: The Game. Despite that criticism, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very fun game.
1
u/septictank84 8d ago
I liked it well enough on it's own merits, as a creepy atmospheric horror shooter, it just never felt like a "Doom" game to me.

The black sheep of the Doom franchise. Legitimately one of the best horror games of all time but it never gets mentioned in conversations because of the series its from.
