I absolutely cannot believe that this picture is now ten years old.

I'll never understand it. On one hand I get that Steam makes an insane amount of money, but on the other hand Half Life 3 would be 100% successful from a financial standpoint. They've got nothing to lose and millions to gain

They've got nothing to lose

Except their brand image when HL3 inevitably doesn't live up to its exceptional hype.

It's the same trap the Elder Scrolls series is in - catching lightning in a bottle is really hard, let alone doing it twice.

What brand image do they have to lose? They're the default storefront for PC games, they make billions annually just on that alone. They also have a string of hardware releases that have completely flopped.

There's an entire generation of people out there that are probably only vaguely aware that Valve even made games at one point.

Exactly. HL2E2 came out in 2007, so someone born then would be 14 now.

Yeah, Alyx exists and i've heard its good... But its a prequel to HL2. It doesn't need to exist. At this point there are only a few more years of anyone that still cares about the Half-life story left. (not because we're dieing off, but because lets face it we're moving on.)

realistically the truth is that valve has no interest in completing the story. But if they decide to complete the story 10-20 Years from now, it will be too late for very many people to even care.
