People were upset because they expected more post release content longevity from the first game and instead Valve released a sequel within 12 months of release of the first game.
I do think people were somewhat right to be upset but apparently Valve released L4D2 so quick because any DLC they wanted to release for L4D1 had to be paid for due to Xbox and PS policies at the time that didn't allow for free updates. I assume Valve thought it would be more fair to just release it all as a paid sequel for all platforms to make it fair and more accessible to the masses.
