Ohhhh, varnishing…I thought you said vanishing, like you were gonna pour acetone or something on it.

440

u/ScottIBM Jul 27 '21

Totally read that and was ready to be heart broken by the pour

112

u/APG619 Jul 27 '21

Yep I spent 45 seconds anxiously waiting for the beautiful painting to vanish.

35

I third this

32

u/rjk3015 Jul 27 '21

I fourth this...I only reread the title after I saw that the painting was perfectly fine.

19

u/Le_Chop Jul 27 '21

I fifth this. I blame the fact I only just woke up.

9

u/BloodBurningMoon Jul 27 '21

I bland the fact that it's almost 2am here and the fact that I should be asleep

Edit: I see the typo, I'm leaving it

8

u/RamenDutchman Jul 27 '21

I sixth this, these two comments describe me perfectly and I will now be drinking my "needed" cafeïne

2

u/Risley Jul 27 '21

I seventh this, because home bae left off including a B-wing, which is an artistic atrocity

37

u/undefinedobject Jul 27 '21

I was waiting for it to start vanishing too lol

15

u/Here_in_Malaysia Jul 27 '21

That's the kind of chaotic energy I was bracing for, but it turned to just be a brushy brushy gif.

8

u/RunawayAsteroid Jul 27 '21

Me at the end: "That's cool, but the painting is still there."

20

u/Remz_Gaming Jul 27 '21

That was the first thing I thought and clicked on the comments to say this.

My heart skipped a beat when I through they were erasing it for some weird reason!

3

u/silveroranges Jul 27 '21

I just saw vaccination post I read vaccinating my star wars painting and was like o.O

3

u/Skye_WorldDestroyer Jul 27 '21

Came here for this. Thought it was a death star/alderaan joke

3

u/feureau Jul 27 '21

My brain: OP be like "Execute order acetone"

4

u/Phoenixilva Jul 27 '21

Vanquishing?

2

u/seyaat Jul 27 '21

Thought they were gonna hit it with a blaster.

2

u/Jtxbowl Jul 27 '21

Glad i wasnt the only one. Literally saw the pour and was like the beautiful colors... wait. Its not vanishing.. theres an r oh thank god.

2

u/jaytoothetee Jul 27 '21

The video looped before I realised my mistake.

2

u/Phoenix_Lazarus Jul 27 '21

Hahaha you're not alone. Today I learned I can't read. ☹

2

u/dncypntz Jul 27 '21

I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one

2

u/skapoww Jul 27 '21

I also read vanishing. I cannot explain why I clicked it, thinking that.

2

u/Lketty Jul 27 '21

Every single time I see these varnishing posts, I read it as vanishing!!!

2

u/ollygb Jul 27 '21

Same here! Was thinking "why would you wanna make a great SW pic vanish??"

Totally makes more sense now.

2

u/marousio Jul 27 '21

Funny I read the same thing….lol wonderful painting skills OP

7

u/AmerWerewolfInParis Jul 27 '21

4th time I’ve made that mistake with this account. It’s like OP is unintentionally the new /u/shittymorph

Don't forget: our AT-AT needs some little AT-ST friends. Right about... here.

And when we're adding in laser fire, you have to imagine the sounds or it won't come out the same.. ptch-tchuuu... ptch-tchuuu... This is the way.

Happy little AT-AT

274

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '21

Is this done in the style of an Albert Bierstadt painting? It looks like "Among the Sierra Nevada Mountains."

252

u/a_rose_art Jul 27 '21

Yes! Based on what I’ve found online, the reference photo I used is his Among the Sierra Nevada Mountains painting that someone added the AT-AT to as fan art.

107

u/Inqubate Jul 27 '21

When you pulled back the camera I went, "Hey that's my desktop!"

Lol great work

2

u/reallyConfusedPanda Jul 27 '21

Same here! The details on that painting are just astonishing

2

u/GoatMang23 Jul 27 '21

So glad you mentioned Albert Bierstadt. I really love his style. My favorite is “Puget Sound on the Pacific Coast.”

2

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '21

I've never seen this one before! I like it a lot.

2

Love the people seeking refuge from the dark ocean. And the bright sunlight in the distance creates that trademark volume of space, but also make the predominately dark sky look truly ominous.

u/ShermanLiu Jul 27 '21

Pour varnish directly on the canvas then use such a small brush, yikes.

27

u/earlgrey-warm Jul 27 '21 edited Jul 27 '21

Not sure if it been mentioned yet, but you def don’t want to pour on the varnish. It specifically says not to on the directions IIRC. Also, yes a big soft brush would be better.

Edit: I went through some hellish results with Gamvar recently, had to completely wipe it off and use a spray to get the matte finish I was seeking.

13

u/amishgoatfarm Jul 27 '21

Why would you use a brush so small for that.

57

u/FinalLimit Jul 27 '21

ELI5 how varnish works any one? I’m not getting how it can make things look sharper

94

u/a_rose_art Jul 27 '21

Varnishing evens out the gloss of the painting, makes colors a bit more vibrant, and protects it! Varnishes can be removed, without damaging the paint underneath, and reapplied. Sometimes you see that happen on really old and yellowing paintings when they are restored.

7

u/_Citizen_Erased_ Jul 27 '21

I asked reddit a while back what type of varnish I should buy, and I didn't get a reply. Do you have a recommendation? I'd hate to get the wrong kind and ruin my painting.

12

u/earlgrey-warm Jul 27 '21

Golden Spray Varnish is great for matte finishes, otherwise Gamvar (shown in video) is a good option, just read the directions and follow them.

u/powderedchalk Jul 27 '21

And to add to the op's comment, if you haven't watched a restoration where they do this, I recommend it. This shows the whole restoration process, edited down to 8.5 minutes and including removal of the original varnish, with a re-varnish and before/after comparison at the end

22

u/jonassalen Jul 27 '21

Don't forget the fantastic YouTube channel of Baumgartner restoration: https://youtube.com/c/BaumgartnerRestoration

10

u/risseless Jul 27 '21

Absolutely fantastic channel. Someone posted a link here on reddit like a month ago and I ended up binging the entire channel. Now I eagerly await new videos. Who knew I would find art restoration so compelling.

2

u/PM_ME_PSN_CODES-PLS Jul 27 '21

Wow that's amazing

161

u/basketballwife Jul 27 '21

u/AssInTheHat Jul 27 '21

or as millennials say, A-T A-T.

8

u/KarmaticArmageddon Jul 27 '21

I just think "AT field" when I see it and then I get depressed again

29

u/MrTeeBee Jul 27 '21

It should be spelled out rather than said as at at.

You can’t say at st, or at rt, or at pt, or at te, or at ap, and have it make sense. Even most of the games, as far as I’m aware, say the letters rather than trying to spell it out.

11

u/ctrl-alt-etc Jul 27 '21

This is my rationale too. Say "a convoy of AT-STs and AT-ATs" out loud.

u/forensic_freak Jul 27 '21

A little too long for the reveal. Great work though.

23

u/captain_carrot Jul 27 '21

A little? That was like 45 seconds of watching brush strokes back and forth for the final shot. Bro, we get it, just show the finished product

3

u/adarnasiykh19 Jul 27 '21

Bob Ross would be proud ❤ good vibes here ❤

37

u/Feck_arse Jul 27 '21

This is awesome but would've been way better if you just filmed the whole painting and didn't do any of the cuts and slow mo and junk

34

u/jettrscga Jul 27 '21

I'm not a fan of the "super zoomed in" trend. I understand the intended amazement effect when they zoom out, but eventually I just get tired of not being able to tell what's going on. And it really makes it tougher to see the varnishing effect.

3

u/k_laaaaa Jul 27 '21

6

u/Negative-Dot-6566 Jul 27 '21

When should you varnish vs. spray coat with a gloss or semigloss?

3

u/schnitzelfeffer Jul 27 '21 edited Aug 04 '21

A spray coat never gave me the shine a brush on gloss gave me. It seals the work and gives an even, quick coat which is nice. It does a good enough job. A Gloss varnish is a crystal clear top coat. It's like putting a piece of glass over your work. It makes the blacks deeper and colors more vibrant. It can be so shiny and reflective that it also catches a glare from every light when viewing. For a smooth glass-like gloss varnish, I'd use long, even brush strokes across the entire canvas without overlapping as much as possible and let it dry completely before applying more layers of varnish, from the alternating directions. A semi-gloss is a happy medium between matte and gloss. It does a nice job for most work but nothing will ever be as breathtaking as applying a gloss varnish to a painting. They used to have "varnish parties" where artists would celebrate the event. It's all just a preference on what the finished piece to look like.

2

u/Dice_to_see_you Jul 27 '21

as a minis man, i spray them all unless i need to spot gloss something. now i'm interested in what's different between brush and spray on paintings

6

u/OlympicSpider Jul 27 '21

The type of varnish OP used doesn’t come in aerosol and I’m not sure if it can be put through an airbrush or not. This type of varnish is designed to be able to be removed and reapplied without damaging the painting underneath. Also generally you want varnish on paintings to be a lot thicker, which would require more coats with spray. Airbrush/aerosol is great for minis because you don’t want it to be as thick.

3

u/schnitzelfeffer Jul 27 '21

Spray on did a decent enough job, but for me brush varnish is the way to go. Brush on gloss varnish is the most picky varnish to use but gives the blacks breathtaking depth and colors a boost in vibrancy that might be good for minis. You'll want to use careful, long, even brush strokes across the piece applying a thin coat. Do not go back over it once it begins to dry or you could create milkiness. Once dry, apply a second thin coat using strokes from the opposite direction to try to get as flat of a gloss as possible. A third or fourth coat can be used depending on your preference. With gloss the only problem is the glare from lights. Semi-gloss helps with glare but doesn't make blacks quite at deep, semigloss is usually a safe bet for most paintings. Matte doesn't make anything vibrant but it definitely brings the piece together. It's all just personal preference really.

4

u/thiosk Jul 27 '21

the file is almost exactly 45 seconds long which means:

First open this in another tab, then come back and watch the video again

5

u/Jaguar448 Jul 27 '21

Not a painter myself, but I can imagine the deep satisfaction artists have when they varnish a finished piece.

7

u/garfnodie Jul 27 '21

Maybe in a hundred years, Julian Baumgartner's great, great, great grandson will be restoring it.

2

u/NationalAlbatross Jul 27 '21

I read it as vanishing and waited all through expecting something to "vanish"

2

u/dogy411 Jul 27 '21

Ive had the photo version of this as my wallpaper for years. Awesome artwork

2

u/All_Usernames_Tooken Jul 27 '21

My stupid ass thought it said vanishing. I was like. “So when’s the painting going to disappear?”

2

u/strangerdanger84 Jul 27 '21

Read as vanishing and was super confused for a sec.

9

u/jorph Jul 27 '21

I wish I could paint half as well as you varnish

29

u/GenuineSteak Jul 27 '21

Practice then.

1

u/white_android Jul 27 '21

Don't downvote this person.

Practice IS all it takes to be good at things. Unless you have something that keeps you from being able to do it physically you're just making excuses not to improve.

Plus painting is super relaxing even when you make mistakes. Just play around and enjoy getting familiar with the process.

-6

u/SassyShorts Jul 27 '21

"But I'm not artistic!" - me, an idiot, in highschool.

I still haven't practiced art yet though.

3

u/CMxFuZioNz Jul 27 '21

Used to think I absolutely sucked at drawing. Spent a few months doing 20mins-an hour a day and within a couple of months I was drawing stuff that I actually considered good. It's all about practise.

That being said, I haven't drawn in a couple of years now and I reckon I'm probably rubbish again.

1

u/yopladas Jul 27 '21

You can do it now or tomorrow, highschool is often one great time but it's by no means the only time. Invest time and it will pay back.

u/MichaelMyersFanClub Jul 27 '21

Oh shit you’re right :O

Shame that the original picture isn’t the OC from the reference artist but I guess props to the reference artist for making the AT-AT walker in the same style as the original picture by Bierdstadt.

And props to OP for their own (pretty) rendition of it

(And of course props to Bierdstadt for creating such a beautiful landscape)

3

u/vaibhavganesh Jul 27 '21

Props all around !

1

u/Leland_Gaunt_ Jul 27 '21

This is a beautiful piece. It reminds me of when I used to teach the Russian Revolution and for the end of year exams, the history examiners didn’t get a licensed copy of the Storming of the Winter Palace by Nikolai Kochergin for the students to analyze. Instead they ripped one off the internet and failed to see that it was altered to include a battletech marauder just chilling in the background. Lovely work

0

u/ProgramTheWorld Jul 27 '21

Took me long enough to realize the title doesn’t say “vanishing”

0

u/Javier91 Jul 27 '21

I look forward for the day that I will not misread varnish as vanish.

1

u/Babblewocky Jul 27 '21

Because it’s dry.

u/Saigaface Jul 27 '21

0

u/hotdogwaterandpledge Jul 27 '21

I understand varnish on wood but is there different reasons for doing it on paintings? Honest question here folks.

1

u/itsadoubledion Jul 27 '21

It gives an even gloss and can make the colors a bit more vibrant. Also protects the painting

-6

u/myeyebrowmustache Jul 27 '21

This looks like shit! Just kidding .. looks absolutely amazing. Good job. 👍✨

1

u/chargoggagog Jul 27 '21

Won’t varnish discolor over time?

1

u/fledan Jul 27 '21

Can I ask what brand of varnish this is and the type?

1

u/JustThatSikhBoy Jul 27 '21

Is it possible to varnish a painting too much?

2

u/stoaster Jul 27 '21 edited Jul 27 '21

Yeah, going to crazy can make it kinda hazy though I'm not sure why you'd need to add a ton. I generally do two thin coats.

Depending on how shiny you want it they sell different varnishes ranging from matte to high gloss.

1

u/JustThatSikhBoy Jul 27 '21

Thank you! I've seen the pictures that have restored and the varnish also yellows with age too right? Granted it would have to be a significant amount of time.

2

u/stoaster Jul 27 '21

Yeah, the varnish can yellow eventually too, but better than than the paint itself.

1

u/Smooth_Talkin_Fucker Jul 27 '21

What is the purpose of varnishing a painting? Does it stop the paint from fading?

1

u/stoaster Jul 27 '21

Yeah, with oil paint in particular it's important to keep the color from looking dull over time. Acrylics don't really need it so much but it can still be nice to add some shine if that's what you're after.

1

How does varnish increase detail and saturation on paintings?

1

u/ROFLpwn01 Jul 27 '21
