What is this metal layer underneath what I thought was drywall. Could it be toxic?

It's possible that the door frame is metal and was painted over with wall paint. It's not common in residential homes but I've seen houses from the 1950's that used to be military housing with splayed metal door frames flush with the wall (no trim).
