My friends and I lost quite a few dogs. Not to mention all the lost posters I've seen. When I find the idiot they're usually roaming around with no intention of coming back home. Wild canines have huge territories, it makes sense that a dog would explore as much territory as it can. Unfortunately dogs are a far cry from their wolf ancestors and usually get lost.
I can see how my previous post might have given the impression that they wouldn't come back on their own so much as they can't. Most of the time. Plenty of dogs do find their way back, especially in rural areas.
