Where can I find the btw version of Arch Linux?

I always see people in the Linux community saying they use Arch btw but I couldn't find the the btw version in their website, just regular one. Is it a members-only kind of thing? I'd love to give it a try.

Thanks in advance.

I'm actually surprised there isn't a derivative of arch called archbtw

108

u/brothersand Nov 26 '21

Why do I get the feeling that there will be soon.

47

u/Artemis-4rrow Nov 26 '21

If someone ever says "I wish x distro existed" or any such line then someone will make such a distro

After my comment someone will make a distro and call it x

Dare to whoever wants to make it: make ur own desktop environment for it

38

u/NiceMicro Nov 26 '21

nah, they already made a display server called x :(

1

u/Artemis-4rrow Nov 26 '21

No a distro

3

u/NiceMicro Nov 26 '21

sure but you wouldn't want to confuse the people by giving something totally different the same name :P

8

u/Cheese_B0t Nov 27 '21

I use x with x btw

8

u/radiantai2001 Nov 27 '21

i use x with wayland with xwayland btw

2

u/manish_s Nov 27 '21

Name the spin of x (distro) that runs on a wayland DE as xwayland. Makes it more confusing.

5

u/RAMChYLD Nov 27 '21

It happens.

Will downloading chromium on your distro pull down the web browser or the vertical scrolling shooter? Will downloading tenacity get you the audio editor or the python module?

9

u/lpreams Nov 26 '21

Like rule 34, but for distros instead of porn

4

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

If you can think of a distro, there's porn of it.

2

u/Artemis-4rrow Nov 26 '21

R34 is if it exists then porn of it does

This is re5 territory: If there is no porn of it, it will be made

4

u/Mark12870 Nov 26 '21

You mean "x/os linux"?

5

u/CaptainSkuxx Nov 26 '21

Dare completed. It is called "X Distro" because the intended way to use it is using vanilla X11 as your graphical interface. You are supposed to run your graphical applications with the xinit command. The desktop environment is a preconfigured tmux. Have fun.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

1

u/Artemis-4rrow Nov 27 '21

Bruhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

1

u/shaumux Nov 27 '21

Distro X - It has special abilities to look for other gifted distros around the world and then brings them to the server for the gifted to be nurtered into distros with great powers and responsibilities. It preaches peaceful coexistence with windows.

It has an arch nemesis distro too which fights for anhiliation of all windows, so linux distros can take their rightful dominant place in the world as the true epitome of desktop OSs, and are no longer shackled to servers to serve the privileged unworthy windows.

4

u/Tireseas Nov 26 '21

Yeah it'll just be Ubuntu with a blue i3 theme and anime wallpaper. Because the noobs using the meme won't know the difference.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

And when Ubuntu spontaneously break their system, as usual, they'll think it's because it's too bleeding edge.

9

u/brimston3- Nov 26 '21

Some wise guy has made sure archbtw.org redirects to archlinux.org. According to Whois, about a year ago.

255

u/Zahpow Nov 26 '21 Silver

It is just vanilla Arch but with anime wallpaper

77

u/dmcMethematics Nov 26 '21

How do you setup wallpaper in arch. Mine just have black screen with blinking cursor

40

u/Zahpow Nov 26 '21

Oh i just use fbv -c FOO.jpg after every command that i run. This will leave the picture in the framebuffer effectively giving you wallpaper.

30

u/Arnas_Z Nov 26 '21

You first have to go to https://wallhaven.cc, then hit the #anime-girls button. Make sure to uncheck "sfw" and check "sketchy", and then refresh results. Now pick a wallpaper, download it, and set it as your wallpaper (process may vary depending on DE/WM)

9

u/brando56894 Nov 26 '21

https://wallhaven.cc

I love how if you go to "Top Wallpapers" about half of them are anime girls and a quarter of those are literally just anime boobs. No face, just focused on clothed anime boobs.

3

u/Arnas_Z Nov 26 '21

No, I believe the previews on that website are a bit cropped for some reason. If you click on one, it should load the full image.

9

u/brando56894 Nov 26 '21

Ah, yeah, still funny though how most of them fit perfectly, but the wallpapers of girls with huge boobs it's just focused on the boobs hahaha

8

u/fancy_potatoe Nov 26 '21

Either there's a boob detecting algorithm or they make the images with this in mind to get more clicks

6

u/nool_ Nov 26 '21

But what if i want an anime boy wallpaper

6

u/5ilver Nov 26 '21

There isn't a button but I checked search and it said 7,956 Wallpapers found for Anime boys so you should be ok.

8

u/aaaaaaaaargghh Nov 26 '21

cat Wallpaper.png

If you want it animated try

tail -f Wallpaper.png

-20

u/Andy34G7 Nov 26 '21

umm first you gotta install a DE like GNOME, KDE plasma, cinnamon, etc.

4

u/potentiallynotfelix Nov 26 '21

Don't tell the noobs you dumbass

1

u/SpareAccnt Nov 26 '21

Nah, cat a.png will display a.png perfectly. Just make sure a.png is ASCII art.

9

u/TheHighGroundwins Nov 26 '21

Also required mandatory there has to be. Window tilling manager that has transparent terminals

5

u/Zahpow Nov 26 '21

Pfshhh anything more than tmux is bloat

4

u/Environmental_Ad7052 Nov 26 '21

Tmux is big chungus. Use gnu screen

2

u/RandomXUsr Nov 26 '21

You're doing it wrong. Just buy a set of mobile monitors.

:)

2

u/Environmental_Ad7052 Nov 27 '21

Naw they're too expensive. Slice up your monitor with a knife instead and repair them using crazy diamond to change layout.

Either that or waterbend the liquid crystals in your display into a certain layout to tile your windows.

STAND or BEND, your choice

1

u/5ilver Nov 26 '21

I use both because hitting ctrl a a for nested session commands is annoying

1

u/SmallerBork Nov 26 '21

I still don't understand tmux and screen. Or rather I'm not clear on what you do with them. I was told you install them on a server to run programs in the background but I also see people using it on desktops.

5

u/dontquestionmyaction Nov 26 '21

It's just an easy way to have multiple terminals open at once. tmux keeping them open even when you disconnect from it is just a side feature.

1

u/c-1000 Nov 27 '21

Basically, they're tiling window managers for the TTY (although they work in a terminal emulator also).

2

u/Schievel1 Nov 26 '21

You win the thread

1

u/slimmsady Nov 26 '21

This is the way

73

u/namelessfuck Nov 26 '21

Well that's just Arch with the btw kernel. Just like how Arch Linux is Arch with the Linux kernel and Arch Hurd is Arch with the Hurd kernel, Arch btw is Arch with the btw kernel.

36

u/skellious Nov 26 '21

excuse me, i think you'll find that's Arch GNU-Linux

17

u/Zacki_404 Nov 26 '21

Arch GNU+Linux

13

u/atoponce Nov 26 '21

Arch GNU+Linux btw.

I think there's been some confusion here. "Arch btw" isn't a version of Arch. I guess you could call it a bit of a meme. When people say "I use Arch btw," the "btw" actually means "iron man mode."

This might sound like complete nonsense, but bear with me. The phrasing comes from a game called Runescape. Although it's well-known for being a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game, accounts may be created in "iron man mode," imposing various restrictions upon the account intended to force the player to rely upon themselves and largely turning the game into a single-player experience. Due to stereotypes surrounding iron man players - specifically, their compulsive urge to share the fact that they're an "iron man btw" - the term "btw" is playfully used as a synonym for "iron man." Due to a 100% overlap between Arch users and Runescape players (don't ask me why - I can't even begin to imagine), the term "btw" was used to refer to an analogous "iron man" challenge conceived by Arch users.

As far as what that challenge entails, there's a bit of debate there.

Originally, it meant no internet access. This forces users to craft their own software or obtain it via physical media rather than the package manager. This might sound strange or even horrifying, but many feel it recreates a certain era in Linux's history.

As the Arch btw challenge grew more popular, however, some began to argue that the magic wasn't in having zero internet access but more about eliminating the package manager in particular. They reason that the package manager did away with countless precious interactions between users and developers, making Arch less of a social distro. Such individuals argue the essential restriction of Arch btw is not using the package manager and began referring to the zero internet version of Arch btw as "hardcore Arch btw."

Others have gone the opposite direction and imposed even more restrictions upon themselves, such as not using non-volatile storage, having their computer detonate on losing power, or not using systemd.

There's much, much more to cover, but hopefully I've said enough to clear things up!

btw I use Arch btw, by the way

edit: And to be clear, I mean hardcore Arch btw. I coded my own networking software and hand-made a cable that I plugged into my neighbor's router while he wasn't looking, so I haven't broken any restrictions.

32

u/potentiallynotfelix Nov 26 '21

Respect for actually writing that

8

u/SliceJosiah Nov 26 '21

They had us in the first 5% not gonna lie.

4

u/SmallerBork Nov 26 '21

Broooooooooooo

Didn't the founder of Arch say he wanted to make a distro that was as easy to use as possible for people like himself or something? And that a package manager was necessary for that, back then it wasn't ubiquitous for every distro to have one.

3

u/backfilled Nov 27 '21

This should be in the wiki.

3

u/jpastore Nov 26 '21

You are iron man btw

3

u/KinkyMonitorLizard Nov 26 '21

I coded my own networking software

So you're the one to blame for systemd-networkd

1

u/01000110010110012 Nov 26 '21

Nah. They're just flexing.

1

u/mrazster Nov 26 '21

u/ShayneC420 Dec 13 '21

By the way maybe?

1

u/Cat_Marshal 27d ago

I am so happy I read this.

36

u/cemeth Nov 26 '21

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Arch btw, is in fact, Arch, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux plus Arch. Arch btw is not an operating system unto itself, but rather a meme spelling of the fully functioning Arch Linux system.

2

u/real_bk3k Nov 26 '21

Sir, this is a Wendy's.

2

u/i5oL8 Nov 26 '21

Not Golden Arches btw?

11

u/akhilachanta8 Nov 26 '21

right click on random anime picture, and then select the option to set it as desktop background.

NOw regular archlinux has been converted to arch btw

7

u/anonymous_2187 Nov 26 '21

You forgot the tiling window manager, transparent terminals and neofetch open in at least one terminal window at all times.

4

u/akhilachanta8 Nov 26 '21

as well as bashtop/bpytop.

Now that you mention it, I also forgot the 4k reddit karma they have, just from posting their 'rices'.

and you forgot that the tiling windows manager has to have gaps, as well as have cutomized fish/zsh shells.

3

u/anonymous_2187 Nov 26 '21 edited Nov 26 '21

and you forgot that the tiling windows manager has to have gaps

Oh yes, the gaps should ideally take up half the screen. What's the use of a wallpaper if you can't see it at all times?

2

u/akhilachanta8 Nov 26 '21

absolutely. and the terminal should be split hald screen on the left half, and the right half should be split into two, to make three total terminal windows.

3

u/Architector4 Nov 26 '21

Make sure to make the terminal 50% transparent - sure that makes the text hard to read against the wallpaper with hard edges, but this makes sure that the wallpaper is always seen even through the terminals.

2

u/anonymous_2187 Nov 26 '21

100% transparency is amazing. The text floats on top of your wallpaper. It's really an amazing way to improve productivity.

/s

1

u/VNGamerKrunker Nov 27 '21

is it okay if I use a DE instead?

1

u/anonymous_2187 Nov 27 '21

Yes. Just make sure to have neofetch open in a terminal.

yes actually there is, download it here Archbtw

Well thats fine, some people are from different culture

3

u/SmallerBork Nov 26 '21

OP isn't replying so yes it's a joke.

22

u/Rilukian Nov 26 '21

I pretend that this is not a joke but rather a real question made by someone whose English isn't their first language like me.

"BTW" is an acronym for "By the way." It is used to add some extra information in a conversation. So when someone says "I use Arch btw," it just means they want to let you know that they use Arch as their daily driver.

Arch Linux is a rolling release. Every part of it constantly gets updated so it doesn't need any version numbering unlike something like Ubuntu when it gets update on its important parts every 6 months with version numbers.

5

u/PCChipsM922U Nov 26 '21

This has to be the funniest thing I've read in months ROFL xD xD xD.

24

u/patryk-tech Nov 26 '21 edited Nov 26 '21

Not sure if you are serious, but I guess English is not your native language. (Edit: and after some light stalking, I see you have only been using Linux for a couple of months).

BTW is an acronym for "by the way," and it has become a meme that Arch users will always say they use arch (like people joke about vegans), by the way.

Source: I use Arch, btw.

4

u/mr_jogurt Nov 26 '21

Not sure if i trust your source though.. do you have another?

6

u/patryk-tech Nov 26 '21

Sorry

I had one, but he switched to Manjaro so we're not on speaking terms anymore.

11

u/pille1910 Nov 26 '21

You the man.

3

u/kalzEOS Nov 26 '21

I almost want to say the "btw" is short for "and I have a small penis", but I don't want to.

3

u/v1mt Nov 26 '21

i use archbtw btw

3

u/ArchitektRadim Nov 27 '21

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Arch, is in fact, Arch Linux btw, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Arch btw. Arch is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning btw system made useful by the btw corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

5

u/Andy34G7 Nov 26 '21

btw stands for By the Way
It's a sarcastic joke about arch users mentioning that they use arch in every topic they talk, for example: Milk is white, and I use Arch BTW

3

u/anonymous_2187 Nov 26 '21

I upvoted your comment. I use Arch btw.

5

u/SADI_Merzak Nov 26 '21

i don't know where you can find arch btw distro, I'm using arch btw

3

I see what you did there. A man of culture 🔥

2

u/FreddGreen Nov 26 '21

There is no "btw" version, "btw" is shirt for "by the way", so they mean "i use arch by the way"

2

u/MonsterPissa Nov 26 '21

is this a meme lmao
People say arch btw as a way of saying they use arch and pretty much just a meme

2

u/Scrotote Nov 26 '21

As a twenty year old single male I think it's very hard to find a girl who's actually interested in free software. I've had girls jokingly ask to "Netflix and chill" but when I tell her that I don't use Netflix since Netflix requires proprietary software to stream content, they stop talking to me. And worse if they do stay they think I'm weird since I blocked google IP's in my host file and we can't even watch youtube. I can't ever seem to get girls to come over to my place and I can't text them either. Once I get their numbers since I've added customs roms to my phone and refuse to use sms since it's a security concern I require all of my friends to download a free and open source messaging app and I share with them my public gpg key so that we can verify that our conversations are secure. None of my friends are willing to do this. And I can't use sites like tinder since it's not only proprietary software but a major privacy vulnerability. How come it is so hard to find a girl concerned about software freedom. I feel like I'm going to be a virgin forever.

2

u/TomDuhamel Nov 27 '21

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Arch btw, is in fact, GNU/Arch btw, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Arch btw. Arch btw is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Arch btw, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Arch btw, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Arch btw is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Arch btw is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Arch btw added, or GNU/Arch btw. All the so-called Arch btw distributions are really distributions of GNU/Arch btw!

2

u/glaseren Nov 27 '21

Arch btw is just the 'breath of the wild' version of arch. To use it you need special permissions from nintendo, so yea it's kinda a 'members-only' thing. Maybe you can email them and see if they're willing to take you in.

2

u/madhakish Nov 28 '21

Distros are for lamers.

You haven't lived until you've attempted to compile an entire roll your own install from source that you got from a friend in science class on 27 floppies, using a 8 (16 with turbo mode)mhz 386 and 8mb of ram with a 100mb esdi hdd full of bad sectors.

Newbs.

1337 [email protected] only roll source using compilers hand coded in assembly btw.

1

u/PCChipsM922U Dec 08 '21

To be perfectly honest, if you're using compilers written in ASM, you can probably do all that with only 4MB of RAM xD.

2

u/madhakish Dec 08 '21

I mean, the first one had to be written in asm, but probably on an 8086 with just a few kb of ram so your not wrong..

2

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '21

DUUUUUDE 😂
I use arch btw = I use arch by the way.
It's a dead meme now.

1

u/J_K_Mooney Nov 26 '21 edited Nov 26 '21

To be fair, I've never known an actual Arch user say they "use Arch BTW", I've only seen people mocking Arch users say that. Although, I will say that I've seen the support forums get a little impatient with inexperienced users.

On the other hand, go to a Kali fan or support site and........well, let's just say it will give you some "perspective".....

Then again, an "Arch-BTW" distro could be awesome. Full Calamares installer (but you don't need to tell anyone that) and a modified Fortune Cookie program that gives positive Arch affirmations every time you open a terminal window. Also, instead of the "man" command opening the manual pages, it just opens your browser and takes you to the ArchWiki.

-2

u/Atemu12 Nov 26 '21

By the way, that's just a meme.

That's funny, I actually wanted to make a meme on r/linuxmeme about arch BTW being superior to arch, I guess it's too late now

1

u/WoLfY_HUN Nov 26 '21

I Use Arch BTW means you can say anything I'll tell you that I use it and the BTW is by the way so I'll tell you that I use ArchLinux if you want to or not

Idk bro I found it pretty annoying , Arch BY is the way.
