It’s confusing in the book!

It’s really unexplained in the book. But if I got to cast someone to play him it would’ve been robin williams

I would have cast Jack Black.

I'd want a whimsical nobody. Anyone famous is too familiar. I'd be better off with some really good retired local actor from a musical. You know the type who probably would have made it if they went after a career in showbiz but instead had a family and got a regular job.

It'd add to the mystical nature. Also pay him enough that he doesn't do interviews or such for like 10 years (make it part of the contract)

That way it keeps mystery.

I would’ve cast Danny DeVito, might as well go all the way with it

It's pretty straight forward. Tom has absolutely zero desire for power.

Perhaps because he is an Adam & Eve like creature (?), untouched by sin and desire, and happy within his little garden. Not many want to see the LoTR as a Christian work, so it's probably best to leave that bit out as it doesn't really add to the plot.

That's a good comparison, but I doubt that was Tolkien's direct inspiration. Think more along the lines of a farmer going about their daily life, while WW2 is happening about them. You can still live your own life untroubled (for a time). Blissfully ignorant of the wide world.

I believe Tolkien refered to Tom as a spirit of the English countryside.
