Ahhhh... To be back in 2019 in downtown Nashville when we didn’t have to wear masks. Oh wait, this videos from Jan 1 2021 :(.

Hello to r/IdiotsNearlyDying, and welcome to Downtown Nashville!

We have had a crazy few weeks, so if y’all see some wacky folks just kindly give them some space to lay on the floor and have a tantrum like that guy at Costco.

I live downtown and what struck me was that yesterday was far busier than NYE. Apparently everyone thought to stay home NYE to avoid the crowds, but then everyone had the same idea to go down there NYD.

7

u/StarDatAssinum Cleveland Park Jan 02 '21

Well, all the bars were supposed to close around 11pm on NYE. I have no idea whether they enforced this on Broadway, but I’ll bet a good amount of people didn’t bother going out because they thought about what’s the point of going out on NYE if you can’t watch the ball drop or do the countdown?

2

u/AllG0nePeteT0ng Jan 04 '21

Well, all the bars were supposed to close around 11pm on NYE.

Imagine that conversation at City Hall:

"Mr. Mayor, it's well known that this virus is only infectious after 11:00 pm, so how 'bout we close the bars then?"

"Perfect, let's do it!"

I've lost a few clients over the year by telling them the need to mask up in my office. Good riddance, I say.

54

u/don51181 Jan 02 '21

That's great. I've never seen a business challenge someone who came in without a mask. I think if you bold enough to do that than you got ego to survive getting kicked out.

Its like a stupid power play the non-mask people are doing. They know the mandate and see the door sign but still walk past it.

46

u/austin_throw_awayy Jan 02 '21

I've lost quite a few sales (I work in mattresses) because people don't wanna wear masks. "YoU jUsT dOn'T wAnNa HeLp Me"

Nah dog, I dont wanna get fired or get fined because you're in my establishment without a mask. "Oh I forgot it at home" so you forgot about the mandate too? Sorry to rant, I've just been cussed at quite a few times. It's nice to see that there are SOME people out there who don't hate it when businesses enforce mandates

10

u/Sethmeisterg Jan 02 '21

Damn right.

10

u/ellceeNSH Jan 02 '21

I’m currently scheduling a move and looking for a new mattress! So if you’re local and work off of commission, I would love to give you a sale/my business!

3

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '21

Hey where are you located? I have been needing a new mattress and i have been putting it off since the pandemic started. I will spend my cash with a place that supports doing the right thing. Its a win win for my lungs and back.

2

u/RebelsLegalTeam Jan 04 '21

I'm from Birmingham as well. The answer to your question is yes. There's a reason it's not as crowded and, subsequently, safer. If Birmingham had the tourism that Nashville had, it would be much worse.

Can we all Agree to what is officially “fly over country” because I do t think Tennessee qualifies

3

u/EllisDeeAndBenZoe Jan 03 '21 edited Feb 12 '21

Yeah I wouldn’t count Tennessee as a flyover state.

As far as the southeast goes, I’d say Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, and West Virginia are the flyover states.

Tennessee, Georgia, the Carolinas, Louisiana, and Florida are all states with internationally recognized tourist attractions and/or business districts.

6

u/talk_murder_to_me Jan 02 '21

Oh hell no. The "nice things" are everything we used to do without a second thought or fear of death, like taking a walk or going to a bar or a concert or the grocery store or on a date or having a haircut or going bowling. All the things these people are bitching about missing out on because they can't be bothered to respect someone else's well-being for a short period of time, as if their mild inconvenience is more important than human life.

Do you only see this downtown, or all over the place like grocery stores/home depot/etc? I know here, everyone is masked up unless they are around their “pods”.

42

u/Chi_Sao_ Jan 02 '21

Surprised but not surprised by seeing this... if you walk down 12 south on a Saturday recently it’s as busy but everyone is wearing masks and eager to keep a distance when waiting in line for an hour to eat at frothy monkey or bar taco.

The rest of the city is masked like 90% I'd say. Most everyone follows the rules in grocery, box stores(but little less so), coffee shops nearly (98%), etc...

Downtown is always a shit show. The biggest problem is the lack of state level leadership, it's been left to "the responsibility of the people, and I guess the mayors" -Bill Lee

Mayor Cooper has done pretty well considering the insane amount of backlash from the minority in town (and the large majority out side of town) but Lee hasn't done shit and even less then shit at times when it's extremely critical. Lee has so pointless much blood on his hands it's insane and he's completely spineless.

Maybe it's because I live in Rutherford, but I strongly disagree. When I'm out and about, I rarely see anyone wearing masks properly, let alone wearing them at all. Just the other day I had someone standing 2019 close to me in the check out line at the pet store. I haaate going out. Hate it. But I'm raising a service dog in training and part of his training is socialization, so I try to limit my time out. But Jesus it's a mess.

37

u/MooCower Jan 02 '21

Yeah I said the majority outside of town don't seem to care about themselves, their neighbors, their families, or they're community as a whole. I just used less words.

Outside of town = just past the 440 loop and the selfish dickbag level raises significantly with every mile, in every direction... It's sad.

15

u/TolerableISuppose Jan 02 '21

To be fair, Bellevue is probably 90% masked

20

u/53eleven Jan 02 '21

My condo building (well within the 440 loop) residents are about a 1/4 masked up and I’ve had to ask two staff members to please wear their masks while inside my home.

I’ve gotten in the elevator (alone and carrying a a bass guitar, a messenger bag, and a box of Xmas presents) and two unmasked party goers (they were dressed nice & carrying food like they were on their way to a Xmas potluck) got on behind me. I didn’t say anything that time, just got right off and took the stairs.

I’m done being quiet about it. If your laziness and/or inability to understand or accept science is putting my health/life at risk, you and me have a problem.

23

u/TolerableISuppose Jan 02 '21

Oh, I lost my chill a long time ago. ICU nurse here AND my FIL died in July of Covid. I will never understand the rampant selfishness of others.

10

u/53eleven Jan 02 '21

I’m so sorry for your loss.

I’m really struggling today understanding how there can be such an enormous segment of the population who can’t do the simplest thing to protect all of us.

I thought it was a uniquely American problem until I read about the huge party in France where party goers clashed with police. Fighting for your right to party, literally. It’s gross.

17

u/TolerableISuppose Jan 02 '21

So. Gross.

The worst part? I’m a really easy going person who is now low key angry all the time. I hate it.

10

u/jumpingjackisonfire Jan 02 '21

Ugh THIS. I’m not usually a person with a lot of anger, but I find myself with a near constant low key rage brewing. I HATE it.

9

u/Tehcoremeister Jan 02 '21

Dude, I relate so hard to this. I feel like I've spent an entire quarter of this year stewing with rage and I'm usually the most patient, laid-back person. Most of it has come from family going out of their way to be shitty.

Bet you can't guess what their political and religious affiliations are. /s

It’s because you are in Rutherford. My parents live in Murfreesboro and when I go help them I’m always disgusted by the lack of mask wearing. I’m in South Nashville and I couldn’t tell you the last time saw someone at the store without a mask.

I’m terrified for my parents. They’re “following“ the rules but also, like, leisurely shopping.

13

u/WarGeagle1 Jan 02 '21

Exact same for my parents and me. And like half the people I went to HS with (that never leave Rutherford county except to go drink on Broadway once a year) are posting on social media things like “plandemic”, “99.9 survival rate bro”, “they’re micro-chipping the vaccine”, so I have no hope in the virus ending in RuCo anytime soon.

Something similar happened to my MIL the other day (who lives in another state). She was at Publix getting a few things when a dude without a mask came up close by, so she just took a few steps to get farther from him, and didn’t even say anything. Then the dude intentionally got right next to her and smiled.

Wtf is wrong with people? She’s on chemo meds so her immune system is almost non-existent. Covid would be a death sentence. But even if she were healthy, no one wants Covid. She just walked completely away which I commend her for because it would’ve taken all my strength not to hit the guy with the largest thing on the shelf in front of me.

8

Took this video Jan 1. Don’t blame the bars— I’m in restaurants myself. They’ve had it really rough downtown this year and with no police enforcement (even though they are swarming around downtown) it’s really hard to manage those crowds especially when they are outside the bars. But it’s ridiculous the mayor (who I honestly don’t think has done a bad job given all that’s happened his first year in office) says they’re going to start enforcing the “party of 8” ordinance when the main street in nashville looks like this all the time.

Also for those of you who don’t know Tennessee has been close to the top of the rankings in terms of cases per 100,000 for the past two weeks and has no statewide mandate against masks.

I can’t help but feel that if everyone wore a mask, social distanced and stayed inside (unless absolutely needed) for a couple of weeks, we’d be back just about back to having large events by now.

u/MusicForMotivation Jan 02 '21

New Zealand proved it.

The majority of Americans this day and age are selfish, ignorant fucks...as a whole.

3

u/H1ckwulf Doesn't know everything Jan 03 '21

New Zealand is an island country in the Pacific Ocean with the size of Colorado and population of Louisiana. Not even close to the same thing as the USA.

2

u/Jody_steal_your_girl Jan 03 '21

Don’t bother even arguing with these mouth breathers.

3

u/Liam_Neesons_Oscar Jan 02 '21

New Zealand proved what we were all taught by the game Pandemic- that it's not too difficult to shut down an island when a pandemic starts.

If everyone stayed inside for just two weeks we wouldn’t be anywhere near having large events.

Look at any European country with a large population, the ones who had strict lockdowns and social distancing policies are nowhere near having big events.

Look at Germany for example, they had a pretty strict lockdown for most of the pandemic and once they started easing up on it, the infections began picking back up. Look at their graph, it speaks for itself.

Edit: I want to make it clear that I’m not arguing against social distancing or any lockdown policies. I’m just trying to say that strict lockdowns aren’t going to quickly end the pandemic and make things go back to normal (for example two weeks lol). They only reduce the amount of ongoing cases and deaths which is an absolute positive.

5

u/jarnhestur Jan 03 '21

Correct. It’s a lie to make people feel better and follow the rules. It’s needed, like you say, to reduce transmission and therefore hospitalization and deaths.

Let's truly hope that new variant is easily beaten... Cause I swear man, the day we get hit with something on the scale of the Spanish flu, the loss of lives on this planet will surpass a billion. Our stupidity as a people knows no limits.

8

u/mustangwwii Jan 02 '21

I feel like people would take it serious if the death rate were higher than 1-5%. People are selfish and they think if they’re healthy, it’s not a big deal. They ignore the fact that they may be spreading it to people that are high risk.

4

u/mjolnirredditer Jan 02 '21

It's the sheer arrogance... It's sickening.

And the crazy thing is people watching this who haven't been to the city don't realize is this street is very small. It would be extremely easy to police and enforce mask regulations. They simply do not care

I shut down my Bachelorette tourism business for all of 2020. Looks like I’ll still be in eCommerce for another year. People need education.

4

u/thehitch1 Jan 02 '21

And that’s how we roll here in TN.....let’s let everyone come to town because they aren’t requiring the tourists to mask up and help us be the true Volunteer State, to be the super spreader capital OF THE WORLD!

So I live downtown on the south side of Broadway and I went out to the Shell Station on Hermitage and no one, including the clerk, but me had a mask on. I just moved back from the North and it was umm, surprising because I stopped at gas station in Dickson the other day and everybody was masked up.

2

u/mental_soup Jan 03 '21

Well that's what you get when you live with ignorant dipshits that take it as a point of pride to become bigger dipshits when you call them out on how ignorant and dipshitty they are.

2

u/alanis_liberty Jan 02 '21

I know of one business in the entirety of downtown that is actually enforcing the mask mandate. I don’t typically shop there, but I’ve been making a point to do so now. 😂

Don’t you know that Jan. 1, 2021 was the reset and there is no more fake COVID???? /s

2

My sister texted me after I dropped her off at the airport yesterday saying how the majority of the people had their masks under their nose or off completely and weren’t eating or drinking. She was shocked and came from FL so that’s saying a ton....

2

I miss the days where people worried about themselves and minded their own business. Remember those days? Pepperidge Farms remembers

2

u/MungTao Jan 03 '21

They should have just lied and say masks help prevent YOU from getting it, instead of preventing spreading it to OTHERS. People are fucking assholes and cant be trusted to do the right thing.

2

u/Individual_Crab_3824 Feb 01 '21

You see, it’s stuff like this that really chaps my hide. I’m a nurse, I deal w/PUI (person under investigation) patients & COVID + patients every time I work. If you think of the flip side, when an ignoramus, selfish patient comes through my doors because they think they are infected, they want me to drop everything I am doing & take care of them. Putting myself on the line because they were acting just as the folks are acting in the above clip. I say, they should suffer @ home since they took their everyday life & lives of others to Willy-nilly, selfishly doing their thing. COVID is a virus, I can’t do anything for you anyway. Go home take some APAP, check your temperature & monitor your breathing. When they say ‘short of breath’ that means you can’t finish speaking a full sentence without taking a breath of air. Nashville, shame on you......Done ranting now, carry on!

5

u/VANurse1 Jan 02 '21

I was downtown this day and everyone was wearing a mask

2

u/ShiningConcepts Jan 02 '21

Haha. I like that title.

And to be fair, some of these people may be doing their best to socially distance and have no choice but to be outside because they're working/shopping.

4

It was the bomb. It blew the masks right off their faces.

Of course it wasn't, just imagining that some people would literally say that if confronted. "DUDE!!! We got BOMBED!!! We don't need masks now! If we can survive that, we can survive a deadly virus!!!"

A little late, but I really wanted to point something out--and don't believe it's worth a new post, but I'm open to making one if anyone thinks it's worth doing so.

I left a job last year in December. I was already job hunting in November, and actively hunting through spring. Got pretty far in an interview process with one company and then the tornado + COVID hit Williamson. A week later they put on a hiring freeze because it had eked into Davidson, where I live.

I finally got a job again after a year of actively looking, and nearly on the anniversary of leaving the last one! But that's not the point of this post. (EDIT: Noting that the company I'm working for is taking things VERY seriously, I love them so much, and am working remotely. Calling 'em a breath of fresh air is an understatement.)

I interviewed with so many places, and what I found was that most companies in the middle Tennessee area DO NOT CARE ABOUT THIS VIRUS. Not even ones in Davidson. It was RARE to interview with a company that attempted to maintain the six foot distance rule, RARE to interview with anyone who would wear a mask. I wore a mask every damn time, of course. But people seemed to assume that it's "safer" inside closed offices, so they don't wear masks despite the offices being full of people. It's MIND boggling. (Sorry construction company owner, you want me to admin your office, run dispatching, and manage your personal schedule while you play golf for no benefits at $13/hr? I don't think so, not even if there wasn't a pandemic raging around us.)

In addition to being anemic (iron deficient), I am asthmatic. A disease that attacks the respiratory system would WRECK me. My dad is 65, and prone to sinus and respiratory problems. His wife's breast cancer is in remission as of about two years ago, but her platelets are still low. My dad's mom, my Nana, has dementia, is nearly 101 years old, and lives in a home (they used to visit her daily). And finally, one of my brothers is a nurse in a cardiac stepdown unit here in Nashville.

I'm going to remain civil here because all y'all seem to be chill, rule-abiding folk who aren't pants-on-head stupid, but I just needed to express my absolute RAGE at how STUPID locals and tourists are. It's people my age (31) going out being idiots, it's Debbie Sue (random name) who's 55 who just HAS TO HAVE HER HIGHLIGHTS DONE!! ...It's Dave the company manager who has four grown ass adult kids and thinks his employees and clients don't need to wear masks, they cleaned the office, it's fine!!!!!!

It's NOT fine.

My Nana got covid. And thank God, she made it through, it didn't affect her badly, and she's rebounding from it.

I know there are many folk, young and old, who aren't as lucky.

I know there are so many folk from outside Davidson, who are from the holler, who don't care about their health much less the health of other people--and I grew up and am friends with folk from those parts, so no one come at me, because that is a conversation for another time. But I know there are also metro Nashville folk, Williamson county suburb folk, who are being equally reckless and selfish and stupid. We're seeing rural hospitals, already strained BEFORE the pandemic, overflowing, sending patients to nearby counties.

And here we have these people in this video are putzing around like nothing's wrong, like people aren't dying, or being scarred for life with respiratory dysfunction, and sometimes worse.

As I said to a friend of mine earlier tonight, there is a fine line between the rebellious American spirit, and being willfully ignorant to the point of societal disaster. There are so many Americans who would rather spread a LITERAL VIRUS to ~OWN THE LIBS~ or because they literally DO NOT CARE about anyone but themselves. They'd rather wreck our actual economy and contribute to the deaths of hundreds of thousands out of SELFISH SPITE.

Part of me wishes this stuff would only affect the idiots, that maybe some of them might learn a lesson, but that's not how this works. Their recklessness will hurt innocent, thoughtful people too, and I think that's the bit that really grinds my gears and rustles my jimmies the most. If companies, large and small, the people with assets, don't care about the rest of us, what does that tell you about our state, and in fact, our country at large? Nothing good.

I'm sorry y'all. I'm just frustrated and tired. I hope you're staying as safe as you can and I wish y'all love and health.

Not really, he already passed it down saying that cities and counties are allowed to pass mask laws... which Davidson County did.

2

u/bonedoc19 Jan 02 '21

How? There is already a county issued mask mandate (that is obviously being ignored). I don’t see how a mandate at the governor level is going to change the mask wearing habits of tourists, who clearly don’t care.

9

u/Jminie59 Jan 02 '21

The problem is that the city doesn’t want to enforce this. Long-term recovery and revenue versus short-term dollars is a thing. State-level mandates hold sway over city and county governments, and can force penalties on the cities and counties, as well as on the public.

Serious question, why are you expecting people to wear masks outside? All studies show this is useless. The chances of you transmitting the disease for passing someone on the street is 0.

2

u/StarDatAssinum Cleveland Park Jan 02 '21

Source?

Look at how close everyone is next to each other in this video. It might be true that you could avoid wearing masks outside if you were able to maintain a 6+ foot distance, but most people aren’t paying that any mind here.

I am a mask guy I think it’s an easy way to help out and still be able to live my life. However these people are all consenting adults and can do what they want I don’t believe in regulating peoples every day lives. This being said if you don’t like it then you don’t have to go to Broadway it’s super easy in 2021 to sit at home and have all your needs met. Let people take risks the information is out there to understand the risk your taking and that is your adult decision to make.

u/carkuffcity Jan 02 '21

But....How would you get internet points on this sub?

1

u/Cantstandja24 Jan 03 '21

Whether you realize it or not your everyday life is regulated by law and order. Maybe you like those laws and don’t care, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is still happening. The bottom line is we all share space as a society. When an action taken puts the well being of others at risk that is often regulated. Are you allowed to drink and drive? Are you allowed to kill because you are mad somebody? Are you allowed to steal from others? Commit fraud? Are you allowed to rape? Sexually assault?

I mean I get it. At this point what is happening will happen. There is nothing I can do but accept it. However, the situation is clearly one in which a debate on how this situation should’ve been handled is more than fair.
