Sliders was amazing until they got rid of the professor

112

u/HansGruberWasRight1 12d ago

Facts. I was committed to that abusive TV relationship until they merged the Mallorys and suddenly Rembrandt was the narrative anchor. Shit was so bad it made me pine for the worst S1 episodes as though they were The Wire.

51

u/Mikeavelli 12d ago

Just imagine starting at the beginning and knowing Rembrandt was gonna be the one to outlast everyone. It'd be like if Hawkeye outlived all the other Avengers.

8

u/Lereas 12d ago

The fucking cliffhanger at the end was awful.

And they did Wade dirty...being a part of the machine isn't nearly as good as a similar fate met by River Song.

I remember the change. I remember contests on Fox while watching Sliders.

I remember seeing the Disney Mars movie specifically to see Jerry O'Connell.

8

u/jctwok 12d ago

I used to think that until I revisited it while back. It always had a lot of potential, but never really delivered.

6

u/proxmoxroxmysoxoff 12d ago

They didn't, he slid into Middle Earth and became Gimli.

4

u/Cu1tureVu1ture 12d ago

Really seems like it would be a great show to remake any time now.

9

u/mackejn 12d ago

From what I understand, he quit because the show was going to shit due to studio interference. It's not so much that they got rid of him ruining it as it was the actor refused to give into stupidity and wanted out. John Rhys-Davies was the man.

Jerry and Mr. Poopybutthole. He needs a redemption arc.

601

u/americanadiandrew 12d ago

Yeah guess who does the voice for Mr. Poopybutthole..

193

u/dagbiker 12d ago

What do you mean? He's always sounded like David Cross.

309

u/firebeardsghost 12d ago

Lol no way. However, David Cross did do the voice of the alien running the simulation inside of a simulation thing.

100

u/Pixeleyes 12d ago

I think he's saying you can just have David Cross replace him and pretend like it's always been that way, which in that show means making constant cracks about it. People very rarely say "What do you mean?" in an Internet comment without being snarky or sarcastic.

47

u/dagbiker 12d ago

Yah, Specifically Poopybutthole was introduced in a cold open, where they effectively retconed the show to always have included him.

14

They will never, ever try to continue Quantum Leap. They certainly wouldn't try to make a new series that is so bad I had to pause and yell at the screen 20 times while watching it.

Adult Swims statement on Justin Roland and the future of Rick and Morty https://i.imgur.com/hPpxB4G.jpg

273

u/JonathanDP81 12d ago

I think Adult Swim thinks he's guilty, because that's a cold way to announce this.

101

u/Final_Taco 12d ago

White text on black background was the iconic branding of the Adult Swim "Bumps" back after they got rid of the "All kids out of the pool" spots. It's been over a decade since i've had cable so I'm not sure if they still use them.

26

u/Onslaught999 12d ago edited 12d ago

Hey, they still use those, sometimes

I will say that it fits their style. They announce all sorts of things with this white text on black background in a few short sentences.

Or they know there’s more coming down the pipeline than just the domestic abuse thing.

Like most of the articles are omitting a pile of teenager grooming accusations that are cropping up.

125

u/WayneJetSkii 12d ago

Strongly disagree. Adult Swim thinks Roland is toxic & might make it so they can't print money from Rick & Morty stuff. If I was accused of very troubling criminal charges I would assume my current employer would cut ties with me. & then later if I am found not guilty, they could hire me back.

I would try to separate the toxic creator person (that is accused of illegal activity), from my golden intellectual property that is a cash cow. AFAIK, they are not really risking anything by separating from Roland. They risk a lot more if they stood by Roland up until (if*) he is found guilty.

30

u/BlatantConservative 12d ago

I wish the world actually worked like this, we have Roman Polanski having raped a 13 year old and he's still backed by Hollywood. More people get away with this than not.

48

u/skynetempire 12d ago

I work in the finance industry. I worked for a couple of brokerage firms and they wait for the conviction but we aren't in the public eye. Adult swim didn't want the backlash for keeping him on. It does seem more and more animators are toxic

39

u/degggendorf 12d ago

Or just people in general, and we're not evolved to handle fame, money, and power.

Whether they do or don't think he's guilty, they are going to treat him like he's radioactive, cause he is.

Even if he's found not guilty, this kind of reputational damage doesn't disappear, and attaching that name to your biggest animated series is a real bad look for them.

It doesn't really matter what happened, and it doesn't really matter what they think happened. The story is out there, the audience has drawn conclusions, so the reputation damage has already happened. It could get worse if he's found guilty, but if he's found not guilty it only might get slightly better (for those who kept up with the case and are already amenable to listening to his side).

If he got a NG verdict, he would have to go the Jonny Depp route and try to restore his reputation by turning these DV accusations into a defamation case. But even still, very few people are looking at Depp the same way before that trial as after.

In a show where an infinite version of Ricks and Morty’s exist and the main character has ’died’ and then been reborn, aged up and injected with his current memories all in mere seconds, it seems like they could totally get away with a new voice actor every single episode.

Or just Werner Herzog as every character.

I'm for this idea in theory, but I also did not really enjoy Tracy Morgan as Earlie Cuyler.

Like, the dude who previously voiced him obviously needed to be kicked to the curb, but there's no denying that dude's voice + the writing and character design worked in a way that doesn't when the voice is changed.

60

u/Adefice 12d ago

I fucking hated that they did that for the last season. I know it was likely a dig at the old actor, but Tracy’s voice is physically painful to listen to long term. Would have rather they cancel the show before that.

Lmao it’s like they planned it this way. Rick and morty has so many plot portals (as opposed to plot holes) and 4th wall breaks that they could just outright say the voice actor was accused of domestic abuse and it would somehow still fit the show.

The show is built on the idea that nothing has rules or makes sense, so you can’t really break rules that don’t exist.

Edit: glad I was able to comment before the post got locked.

41

u/VinhBlade 12d ago

and 4th wall breaks that they could just outright say the voice actor was accused of domestic abuse

okay now THAT is something that I'd laugh my ass off if I saw that in the show for the first time unexpectedly.

Why do we why d why do we sound different but no one else does?

u/RatherNerdy 12d ago edited 12d ago

That would actually be great. Guest voice actors for the rest of the run.

Celebrity guest voices doing their best Rick voice (as terrible as many of them will be), and then a few random cues or lines to give away who the voice actor is. Not too on the nose, just a subtle nod.

Edit:

Some examples to show how great this would be (think about Rick in their voice)

  • Tracey Morgan
  • Danny Devito
  • Sam Eliot
  • Sir Patrick Stewart
  • Dame Judi Dench

91

u/TavisNamara 12d ago

There's a show where every episode, the main characters are played by a new cast of VAs. Wikipedia has an entire mess of a chart showing who voices which character when.

26

105

u/Sean1117 12d ago

He was apparently a dick to his ex GF (she was in a lot of his skits) when she had a very dangerous miscarriage.

That whole deal is a mess. A bunch of he said/she said, and both of them look worse off for it. She said that he wouldn't go to couples therapy, he showed texts that proved he was fine and that she could pick out the therapist, etc etc.

It was something that should've been done in private, but they aired it out for all to see.

He came off like a very troubled insane person who drank way too much.

Crazy how that never came across in his writing or characters. Always the ones you least expect.

411

u/Nordish_Gulf 12d ago

I would be interested to hear about this experience if you're willing to share.

648

u/OneFreamon 12d ago

There’s some clips in YouTube. I remember him talking about being abused as a child and people not really sure if he’s joking or not. He was way too drunk and kind of letting it all out. It got messy.

507

u/traumatized_shark 12d ago

here's the clip

He reveals that as 6 year old, he was sexually assaulted by his 13 year old "hot" cousin.

He sets up the story saying he promises the audience will think it's funny and that he's never told anyone this.

He explains that the following day he tells his father who doesn't believe him.

The whole clip is pretty fucking disturbing as the entire audience erupts with laughter as he's telling this story.

41

u/hahahoudini 12d ago

Yikes, opens with Roiland saying he ate too much of a weed chocolate bar a fan gave him and it was just starting to hit him.

9

u/Funkyduck8 12d ago

u/big_bad_brownie 12d ago

I think that influence on him is a lot more apparent in the Rick and Morty Pilot and also the bushtown interpretation.

With high quality production, an entire crew with various creative influences behind him, and the existing tv tropes of the “loveable asshole,” it all comes off as vaguely endearing or tragic depending on the episode.

But they’re not even subtle about the fact that the core of the show is about a deeply abusive relationship and emotional trauma.

He's definitely an alcoholic, they recorded a line reading session and he keeps drinking even though you can tell the rest of the crew tells him it's a bad idea.

11

u/_GCastilho_ 12d ago

I think that was only once as an experiment

121

u/Q_Fandango 12d ago

Are you referring to Dan Harmon or Justin Roiland? This comment could apply to either, lmao…

I was on Harmontown (around the 1hr5min mark) when they came to Montreal for Just for Laughs and it was… an experience, lol.

Everyone was nice enough, I spoke to Spencer after the show and our weirdness merged well. Dan was drunk but that’s a given 🤷‍♀️ I still have a signed poster that I drew for the occasion!

69

u/ItsStevoHooray 12d ago

The vibe I got from his Instagram was a man-child who literally never gets tired of making overly immature/potty humor jokes, and who yeah is maybe not fitting into the place they are in life. Not good signs for someone with so much going for him. And all this horrible behavior fits right into that

6

u/Kraz_I 12d ago

I mean, that was both the annoying thing about him but also his whole appeal. A guy who is simultaneously an immature man-child but also really smart and creative. Looking at some of his earlier work, he's creative sure, but he absolutely needs someone to edit his stuff and tell him when he's got a bad idea, because he's got no filter. I lost interest in Rick and Morty in season 4, and the first seasons are probably so good because he had exactly enough input in the writing without getting the final say. I doubt anyone Dan Harmon brings on will make me want to start watching again.

That plus the heavy drinking and the common knowledge that he suffered from depression and mental illness, I was worried that he'd be a danger to himself and we'd hear that he'd caused a drunk driving accident or had a suicide attempt.

I definitely didn't expect domestic battery though.

My first thought was, that lady's job is going to get a lot easier with Roiland gone.

Then Harmon comes onscreen and makes an ass of himself too, so maybe not.

134

u/CabinThinker 12d ago

I’ve really enjoyed a lot of Dan Harmon’s work, but wasn’t he embroiled in a controversy related to how he treated a woman he worked with? And now he’s encouraging this really out of control work environment and we are also learning Roiland maybe has issues in his relationships with women?

Not super encouraging stuff.

Bad news for ya, turns out MC PeePants is actually a giant spider in a diaper and a shower cap. He's been contacting children, not for sex, but to harvest their sugary blood to power his drill to bore a hole to hell to release ancient demons to sell his diet pills in what is ultimately a pyramid scheme.

I'm never going to support domestic abuse, and if these allegations turn out to be true, then Justin Roiland should be charged sentenced accordingly.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't upset about losing R&M after the best season in a while though.

Edit: He has been charged already.

u/Sargatanus 12d ago

He has been charged. Happened in 2020 and his legal team keeps pushing back court dates.

236

u/ShitHouses 12d ago

Only now that its public, but the case and other accusation have been around for years.

266

u/Agent_Angelo_Pappas 12d ago

The case was sealed from the public up until January 13th 2023. So unless Roiland walked into Adult Swim and told on himself I'm not sure how they would be expected to know prior to the case being made public. Courts don't randomly inform your employer you're being charged, and guy doesn't work a 9-5 where suddenly missing days for appearances would be noticed.

It’s not just WB either, he’s a big part of Solar Opposites and the Mouse doesn’t fuck around.

makes sense it was sealed because apparently he was first charged a couple of years ago and I was wondering why it was only now getting attention

The case was sealed until the month, it's possible that he wasn't exactly forthcoming with Hulu or Adult Swim about it. And if no one else called them...

The allegations are waaaaaaaay more than domestic abuse. People are sharing screenshots of him allegedly trying to exploit people over their own sex abuse.

14

u/Adefice 12d ago

Honestly, how are reruns gonna go? Is Adult Swim going to want this playing every night like usual, his voice prominently playing 90% of the time, reminding people about him being a creep?

I know about death of the artist, but it’s really in your face here. Especially with all this stuff about underage girls. Seems distasteful to have him so prominently displayed.

u/RickSanchez813 12d ago

Replace Justin. No reason to kill the show, it's unfair to the cast and crew. Solar Opposites might be dead though.

u/collinsmcrae 12d ago

There are plenty of voice actors that can recreate the voice. They’ll just outsource the job. No need to worry.

Seems a bold move to recast him. His voice is pretty key to the series, two main characters and dozens of others, plus all his improv stuff. As a casual fan, I'm interested to see how they pull it off.

As a non English speaker what does adult swim means?

389

u/Sneaky_Bones 12d ago

Adult Swim was a segment on Cartoon Network named after a cultural phenomena at public pools where there are either time periods or an entire day where children are barred from the pool so that adults can swim in peace. Adult Swim caters to adult-themed cartoons and comedy shows and later became its own channel

Excellent explanation. Thank you.

24

u/Surumon 12d ago

I appreciate your by-the-facts explanation without embellishment or personal bias.

19

u/Smart_Ass_Dave 12d ago

It was sometimes so adults could swim on peace and also often so the one life guard could get a 15 minute break. Depends on staffing/goals/etc.

12

u/Ange1ofD4rkness 12d ago

.... When did Adult Swim become it's own channel? Last time I saw, it was still part of Cartoon Network's channel, running at night (unless something changed)

15

u/Owyn_Merrilin 12d ago

It's not, but there's this weird pretend thing internally where they're different "networks" sharing a channel, even though it's really just the night shift and day shift, they all report to the same boss, and both have ended up airing shows either originally pitched for or originally shown on the other one, with at least one Cartoon Network show actually getting an Adult Swim only wrap-up season.

Despite this, some people online get really insistent about them being really and truly separate for some bizarre reason.

4

u/gaussian23 12d ago

I've had them as separate channels running 24 hours for while now. Granted, it's repeating blocks rather than 24 hours of programming but it's nice to run AS in the background during the day

"Adult Swim" is the name of a time block [late at night] when Cartoon Network airs cartoons that appeal to an older, adult audience. They contain situations, jokes, and references that children wouldn't get - and we don't want to explain :)

They also give lots of airtime to new shows trying to get recognized. Most fail, but every now and then one becomes popular, eventually moves to a dedicated time slot, or even to another network.

38

u/Potemkin_Jedi 12d ago

I got you. In this context, it’s the trademarked name of a programming section of the Cartoon Network television channel (owned by HBO/Warner); this section airs Roiland’s signature product (a show called Rick and Morty). Historically, the term adult swim comes from the twentieth century when public/community swimming pools were common around the US. At these pools were mostly children, so certain times of day were slotted for a child-free swimming experience (an adult swim). The two tie together in that the programming block was meant for adults but aired on an otherwise child-friendly network.

As in reference to the article or where the phrase comes from?

Adult Swim is the name of the television channel Rick & Morty airs on. The phrase "Adult Swim" comes from the policy many public swimming pools have (or had when I was growing up?): No kids are allowed in the pool for that period of time, only adults, because kids tend to be pretty wild. Which the network adopted to basically emphasize the cartoons they show aren't really for little kids.

12

u/Some1Witty 12d ago

It's also a reference to community pools. At some point in the day a lifeguard or attendant will announce it's time for "adult swim," which is when kids have to get out of the pool so the parents can enjoy it without the mayhem. It's where they got the name (although I don't know if it's still a common practice).
