The parents hired their own attorney from day one, while they let their son the shooter use the court appointed one.

Imagine if the school and parents had taken seriously the drawings and writing that THEY HELD A MEETING TO ADDRESS

10

u/DaisyHotCakes Dec 04 '21

Right? Like why allow him to return to class at all? He should have been sent to an in-patient clinic to find out what all was going on with him and prevent him from doing what he literally said he was going to do. Like I don’t understand so many pieces of this - it’s legit like none of them cared. The shooter’s parents clearly didn’t care if he was having fantasies and hearing voices and that he was going to shoot people. Like wtf is that shit?? And then the school being like oh that’s fine you can come back to class and not get sent for a mental evaluation immediately?? I don’t get it. I just don’t get it.

They can't hire just one. That conflict of interest would be huge. They each have their own lawyer. They have the resources to hire two lawyers for themselves and they leave their kid to depend on an overworked public defender. Don't get me wrong, public defenders are heroes. They are the first and last line of defense between us and a police state. They get paid very little and they carry enormous caseloads. Spare your criticisms of them and save it for the political system which keeps their offices underfunded and staff worked to death and without sufficient time or resources to provide the quality of defense that they are individually capable of furnishing.

Edit: I am glad to see these sentiments about the people in the real trenches having some traction. Donations to the ACLU or even volunteering in your local public defenders office might be ways to appreciate those folks.

192

u/phalseprofits Dec 04 '21

I started looking at law school in 2010. I was a young legal assistant making about $38k/year, which is pretty decent salary at the time and place. That same year, the annual salary for a public defender in the same county was $35k. And at least I’d get rushed out at 5 because the firm I worked at hated paying overtime. The public defenders were just constantly working. The system is in need of a massive overhaul.

Right except the local governments consider this a feature and not a flaw.

This way “scumbag criminals” get an overworked lawyer with few resources, while the Prosecutors get a lavishly funded Police force and budget.

And average folks do not care… until they get arrested.

Oh and it also supports a network of barely competent “private attorneys” who massively overbill for their services.

So… stay out of trouble people!

The problem is:

  1. They bought him the gun
  2. He was writing disturbed, schizophrenic ravings at school. The school instantly called his parents. His parents REFUSED TO EVEN TAKE HIM HOME FROM SCHOOL. They also refused to check his backpack for the gun.
  3. His mom then texted him "LOL next time don't get caught"
  4. He then shot four other kids.
  5. When the parents heard this on the news, the mom texted the kid "Don't do it!" (NOT: "OMG are you safe?")
  6. They are lowlives, who bought a powerful gun for their disturbed kid, then refused to help him, then refused to stop him
  7. They were then charged with manslaughter.
  8. They're fleeing THEIR OWN charges for manslaughter.

269

u/somedude456 Dec 04 '21 edited Dec 04 '21

Bingo! I only heard the parents were charged like 12 hours ago, but no real details. I just watched the press conference and now knowing the details of that kid's drawing and the text it had, stuff like "blood everything, the world is dead, thoughts won't stop"... HOLY FUCK, the parents bought him a gun like 3 days prior, they see this note, and somehow think he should stay in school AND DIDN'T THINK TO CHECK HIS BOOKBAG FOR A GUN? I went from slightly questioning how the parents could be charged to THANK GOD they are charged. WTF!

261

u/BrotherBodhi Dec 04 '21

Yeah I used to mentor a teenage kid who was deeply disturbed, and his dad discovered one day that his search history included googling stuff like "how to plan a school shooting" and "how to get guns for school shooting"

Obviously not the brightest kid to be googling shit like this lol but obviously if anyone is thinking about it, it's a threat. What did his dad do? He told him they were going to the grocery store and got the kid in the car, and then drove him straight to the police station. Then he contacted the school, his counseling office, etc. and got everyone on the same page. Not that difficult to do the right thing in a situation like this

127

u/Bellbaby1234 Dec 04 '21

This was a smart father, to use the grocery store. He could’ve easily been in danger himself, if the kid knew the truth

40

u/paxplantax Dec 04 '21

Wanna take a quicky stroll to the grocery store? Those cheese sticks ain't gonna buy themselves. Hahaha ookie dokie.

Just an FYI as an emotionally disturbed teenager who had depression and dark thoughts, sometimes those open thoughts are cries for help and they want to get caught. Take this kid for example before shooting the school he was acting out and begging for help but his parents neglected to get it for him. So that kid using Google to search for how to plan a school shooting was a way for someone to find out and stop him.

These acts of violence aren't something that just one day happens. It builds up over time. But kudos on the dad for getting his son the help that he needed

19

u/MuchoStretchy Dec 04 '21

I'm curious, how is the kid now? Is he in a much better place now compared to back then?

I haven't read that they "refused" to check it. It seem like that never even came up, which is a whole other issue, but one that still speaks to their negligence and possibly the school's as well.

3 His mom then texted him "LOL next time don't get caught"

This was in regards to him being caught buying ammunition in class, and not related the pictures they found.

180

u/happyscrappy Dec 04 '21

If it's ever swimmable at Belle Isle it ain't in December.

Perhaps they expected to find a boat in the marina on the island and cross. But I figure those boats would be out of the water this time of year.

171

u/nav13eh Dec 04 '21

Doesn't even matter anyway. CBSA/RCMP/OPP would have picked them up shortly after they hit land anyway.

Yea, their plan all-around was pretty dumb. Not only to go to a city but they hid in the same area as they parked their car and also triggered a security system. Even if they did get to their next phase they would have either died while trying to swim across the river, get caught while doing so, or died shortly after they got across due to hypothermia.

Having an even bigger laugh now and the comments I saw about how they looked like "survival experts" and weren't going to have any issues evading police for some time.

Bellevue & Lafayette (Detroit)

That's half a mile from the Detroit river, about 2.5 miles from the Windsor tunnel and 4 miles from the Ambassador bridge. I mean they're obviously stupid but if they thought they would be able to escape into Canada I don't know how they think that would have worked.

This is that intersection

I just saw they got caught. Lawyers released a statement saying they were not fleeing but left over concerns about their own safety. Huh, maybe they could have just... went to a police station or something? Or just gone to that courthouse where they were to be arraigned?

37

u/usuallyNotInsightful Dec 04 '21

Were they found away from the abandoned car? If so, then hopefully it will get immediately shut down as not actually being a “valid” excuse by the courts.

You don’t flee your home for safety and then abandon your car unless if by “safety” we mean: not go to jail for blatantly allowing your son to be in a situation to commit this act.

18

It seems clear the kids knew what he was doing but the parents running seem to give the impression they knew what he was doing.

201

u/Scyhaz Dec 04 '21

The mom apparently texted the kid after news broke of the shooting at the high school but before the shooter was identified, telling him not to do it. They 100% knew what he was doing.

As a parent I'm more leary of other kids parents than other kids. Shitty kids come from somewhere.

133

u/Zkenny13 Dec 04 '21 Helpful

I mean having an unsecured gun is one thing when a kid that's old enough knows what it's capable of which he was but running after the fact that you're kid has been arrested says something about your character and it isn't something good. I'm from somewhat rural Alabama. I pretty much learned to shoot a gun before a could walk properly. I had friends who hunted regularly and they even made sure I knew what I was doing before even handing me a gun to go hunting. There are safe ways to store a gun whether it be a safe or teaching the kids that it is something meant to kill what you shoot at. My parents don't even own a gun that is post WWII and that's from my grandfather. I'm very liberal but we live where coyotes like to roam and my parents probably have a gun hidden away from me to protect our dogs. There is no excuse for these people.

120

u/TheFrogWife Dec 04 '21

You hit the nail right on the head, there is zero reason to get a kid a for funzies gun or any gun for that matter and not keep it locked up when you aren't with them.

81

u/MarkJ- Dec 04 '21

They didn't buy the kid a rifle or a shotgun for hunting, for some reason they thought buying him a mankiller was a good idea. Yeah there are other things you might do with it but it was made for shooting people. WTH were they thinking?

66

u/TheFrogWife Dec 04 '21

Idk, making assumptions based off of what I've read the post few hours "own the libs" is probably what they were thinking.

47

u/Cihta Dec 04 '21

Terrifying isn't it? Worse is that right now there are multiple gatherings in conference rooms working on how to spin this against the libs. Just watch, in a few days they'll be either defending this family or blaming Biden for it. I wish I wasn't so sure of this.

22

u/Nwcray Dec 04 '21 edited Dec 04 '21

I’m not 100% sure they’ll defend this family. I’m expecting a Sandy Hook style reaction.

Everyone will agree that this was fucked up, but whadda gonna do?🤷‍♂️ Can’t pass any reasonable regulations without screeching that ThEy’Re TaKiNg My GuNs! MuH rIgHtS!

And of course the ‘it’s too soon to have this conversation’ crowd will drown out a lot of other viewpoints.

Edit: Sorry, I was wrong. Just popped over to that other social media app, and saw the comments. They’re blaming Biden, and somehow democrats for this. Apparently Brandon is going somewhere.

I live in Australia so guns in my lifetime have become harder. But with a farming family there's been guns in my house. My dads was in 6 different high cupboards and the bullets separately stored. My grandfather had his assembled, in a cabinet bolted on 3 sides and more than one lock style. Bullets elsewhere. Keys in different places.

Responsible gun ownership is not difficult and fairly obvious really

I doubt it. But this one seems different cause it was different. Parents bought the gun for their troubled kid days before the shooting, they didn't secure the gun, they were called to the school hours before the shooting cause their kid was showing signs he was about to do something and fought administration to keep him there. The parents were clearly culpable in this one.

41

u/Dredgen_Memor Dec 04 '21

‘Lol I’m not mad at you, you just have to learn how not to get caught.’

197

u/Grevas13 Dec 04 '21 edited Dec 04 '21

This one is different. The obvious parental culpability, their political leanings, the parents running. Fox News can be weasels claiming Democrats are politicizing it all they want, this time everyone knows the parents are Trump supporters who armed their child and ignored his cries for help, then tried to flee. This is a cut and dried case of gun ownership gone wrong, along with bad parenting. It's the consequences of Trumpism written in blood.

Hopefully we can get substantive reform.

I think any time a gun is taken by a family member, that wasn't in a locked gun case, the owner should face some criminal liability for harm done to others with the gun.

LOL @ these people thinking they'll be able to get away from the US Marshals.

39

u/zerocoolforschool Dec 04 '21

I think you could hide from them, but you'd basically have to go cold turkey from ever communicating with anyone you know ever again, and never use any kinds of credit cards or cell phones.... or be caught on camera. Basically you'd have to drop off the grid, live in the wilderness, and never surface for any reason. Most people aren't willing to do that. There was actually a tv show based on this challenge. They'd give people money if they could hide from former law enforcement for a specific period of time... but most of them were tripped up by the things that I mentioned.

  1. $10k is 2.5 times the amount they took out. Maybe someone will rat them out since it has to cost the Marshals more than $10k to find them.
  2. How long do they think they'll last with $4k? You need millions in untraceable $ to pull a Jason Bourne.
  3. What ATM network has a $4000 withdrawal limit? I only recently remember going up to $1k after years at max amounts of $300 or $500.

Wells Fargo has a limit of $4000 but only at the big, free-standing ATMs inside the lobby. Not the one recessed on the wall outside, and not the drive-thru. Introduced around a year ago in my neck of the woods. I didn't need that much of course but it was a welcome update for me paying rent in cash, as the old limit was less than rent.

“While the shooter was the one who entered the high school and pulled the trigger, there are other individuals who contributed to the events on Nov. 30, and it’s my intent to hold them accountable as well," McDonald said at a news conference.

She added, “Gun ownership is a right, and with that right comes great responsibility.”

I wish our pro-gun leaders in congress believed the "responsibility" side of that equation. Instead they do less than nothing while the bodies keep piling up

Even if someone is hiding them, they won’t be for long.

They definitely know something we don't know if it's up to 100k

They don't up a reward by 10x in an hour for people who just didn't secure their gun.

If the recommendation is to get your kid into counseling ASAP the protocol should be that the kid doesn’t return to school until the counselor clears them to return. It’s just bonkers to me that the parents weren’t required to remove him from school that day.

Jennifer Crumbley penned an open letter to President-elect Donald Trump, which she posted on her blog, in November 2016.

“Mr. Trump, I actually love that you are a bad public speaker because that showed sincerity, and humility. “You changed your mind, and you said ‘so what.’ You made the famous ‘grab them in the pussy’ comment, did it offend me? No. I say things all the time that people take the wrong way, do I mean them, not always. Do I agree that you should of [sic] shown your tax returns? No. I don’t care what you do or maybe don’t pay in taxes, I think those are personal and if the Gov’t can lock someone up over $10,000 of unpaid taxes and you slipped on by, then that shows the corruption.”

“As a female and a Realtor, thank you for allowing my right to bear arms,” the letter continued. “Allowing me to be protected if I show a home to someone with bad intentions. Thank you for respecting that Amendment.”

My 7 year old daughter asked me about UFO's the other night. She said "Daddy are UFO's real". I sat her down and told her "Well, that is an interesting question. Some people think there is life on other planets, or some other kind of life in the universe, and some people believe they have visited Earth. Other people think they don't exist, as we don't have concrete evidence they exist". Then I smiled and added "What do you think"?

She looked terrified and started staring out the window about to cry. It took ten minutes to convince her that the lights around our pool wasn't a UFO. I thought to myself "That was a bit of trauma there, I fucked up and didn't understand she just wanted to know she was safe."

That is the kind of mistake parents can't help but make from time to time. Nobody is perfect, least of all parents. It's tough and we kind of learn together.

That being said:

HOW in the ever loving fuck do parents like these two exist?

26

u/rumblylumbly Dec 04 '21

Oh man. I totally sympathize with this story. And have one of my own.

My kid and I were climbing into bed and we usually switch off the ceiling light and then stumble in the dark to find the bed lamp switch. We read then bed.

As we’re doing this he comments about how difficult it would be to be blind.

So, obviously I go into overcoming adversity and explaining the extraordinary limits the human body is capable. He asks to see some of these extraordinary things. I figure this is a learning lesson so grab my phone.

I show him videos of blind sprint runners (he loves do sprint running and other sports), then I remember the paralympics and how accomplished people are who are missing arms / legs, etc.

My son is amazed throughout, asking questions, engaging, wanting to see more…. and then fear flashes through his eyes and goes: “can I lose my legs/arms?” and starts crying.

Didn’t have the heart to tell him in that moment it was possible but I omitted and said most of these athletes were born this way.

That being said, I did tell him if he had been born that way we would have loved him just as much as we do now.

I can’t imagine seeing him in pain and not try to help resolve it in some way.

25

u/tlgexlibris Dec 04 '21

His question shows he has the beginnings of an empathetic response to people different from himself. While his concern is initially self-directed, it is a short jump to imagine what life is like for the athletes you introduced him to, the everyday challenges and the triumphs of their training. This vital ability will inoculate him from the diseased hearts of the people involved in this demented news story.

So to recap:

  • The parents gifted their son a firearm

  • Ignored concerning thoughts and actions taken by the kid

  • Didn't even try to stop their son from shooting up the school, but loosely encouraged it

  • The mother lamented to Trump via a letter about the immigrants not caring for their kids, only to be grossly negligent with her own

  • Complains about illegal immigrants, only to try and flee the country while on the lam

  • Went back to the same city of the crime to try and hide

The truth certainly is stranger than fiction nowadays.

11

u/New_Nobody9492 Dec 04 '21

I think knowing the kid and parents just had a sit down with the school’s administration and the parents talked the administration into keeping their son there. Less than two hours later the kid was shooting up the place.
