Not sure a 16 month old has the insight to know what they need.

Lmao. For real. Can you imagine telling a baby "Alright, now you can either drink from the bottle of bleach or the glass of water". Baby straight up chugs bleach and people on the internet go "WeLL the baby Was Given the Option to drink water and chose not to". Like heck.

I think most living things have the insight to breathe. Clearly the baby knows it can just flip over and float if it needs to breathe or take a break. The other day I saw a tiny baby like this jumping backwards into a pool completely under water and keep his head down. Then he would flip over to breathe and just float on his back.

infant self rescue classes , they work pretty well.

teaches them to float on their backs and breathe even if tipped in.

Don't buy a house with a swimming pool, easy!

This is literally training her to not drown in the future if something goes wrong. Why would you not supervise her swimming while "tired" for an extra... what... 10 seconds?

Even my puppy knows when it's time to take a rest. I don't think that's a concept you need an adult brain to figure out. You are either tired or you are not.

You don't need 'insight' to know when you're tired
