Meanwhile, there's a similar feeling that the imbroglio served to distract from the head of Human Rights Watch blaming Israel for antisemitism.

9

u/BocksyBrown Jul 28 '21

What that guy said was 100% on point, "There's been anti-semitism for a long time but if you don't think Israels slow genocide of the Palestinian people isn't stoking it, you're an idiot" is the actual translation of that message, and any other reading of it is wrong.

620

u/Historical-Author-49 Jul 27 '21

Israel's main card to deflect criticism is aggressively counterattack their critics with hyperbolic accusations, to try to put pressure on the critic to be defensive and to apologize. Whenever someone calls you out, just accuse them of worse. It saves you from having to answer the actual criticism.

115

u/dirtycactus Jul 28 '21

Ironic that they accused Ben and Jerry's of practicing "cancel culture", then called them antisemitic and began a social media campaign against them.

399

u/requiemofchaos Jul 27 '21

Pretty much. Israel lumps all criticism against them as antisemitic and anti-Zionist, regardless of who is criticizing them or why, because otherwise they have to actually answer those criticisms and prove that they're wrong (and I truly believe that on some level, Israel KNOWS its actions in Palestine are indefensible; they just don't give a shit because "anything is justified in the name of defense").

I can understand it, given how many of their critics genuinely ARE antisemitic anti-Zionists, but c'mon, Naftali, you really expect us to believe that a duo of Jewish progressives in Vermont are calling you out for the same reasons as Iran or Hamas?

264

u/poodooloo Jul 28 '21

raised jewish - people are so entrenched in the worldview of zionism that they literally do NOT know there is another point of view. it was a VERY hard pill to swallow for the friends who realized that palestinians were being mistreated. One of the hardest things that I and others I know have ever come to terms with is that Israel CAN do wrong. Just my two cents as an American Jew raised in a Zionist environment

65

u/banjosuicide Jul 28 '21

Whenever you have a tribe and some segment of people who are ostensibly members of that tribe disagree with the orthodoxy, they are the greatest threat to the tribe because they demonstrate that others can disagree and still retain the membership and status they desire.

So they are branded heretics and traitors and crushed ruthlessly.

All tribes tend towards ideological purity eventually.

47

u/vawepast Jul 28 '21

Norman Finkelstein comes to mind.

Pro-Zionists argue that if you're Anti-Zionist you're inherently Anti-Semitic. Because to criticize Israel means you don't believe it should exist, therefore you don't believe Jews have a right to exist, therefore you want them all to die.

That's the mental gymnastics these people are doing.

Meanwhile, the IDF will defend killing civilians because of it's "historical need for vengeance" or "fear of terrorist activities".

21

u/TheEpididymisTickle Jul 28 '21

Almost none of them actually believe the chain of logic, though. They're fully conscious that they're gaslighting, they just believe "all the other tribes" are doing the same thing and use that as a justification.

To be fair, there ARE supremacists of all flavors, but these Jewish supremacists think basically everyone else is too.

Because Israel believes “indoctrinated Jews” that are sympathetic for Palestinians are worse than the Palestinians themselves.

They will go out if their way to kill all dissent. Politically Israel feels that Jews should show a unified front.

13

8

Politically Israel feels that Jews should show a unified front.

Israel demands all Jews fall in line with the actions of the state yet attacks conspiracies that non-Israeli Jews are loyal to Israel over their home countries as anti-Semitic.

We’ve seen a bunch of ideologies get normalized that way and Israel realizes the danger of it given how currently they seem to be above criticism because they’ll scream racism and everyone backs down.

My state of Illinois unanimously (house+senate!) passed an anti-BSD law sponsored mostly by Democrats and signed by a Republican governor in 2015. (In case you erroneously assumed this was a partasin thing)

This is what you get by allowing foreign lobbyist to sway your local lawmakers and inject massive amounts of money into campaigns.

101

u/VeryStableGenius Jul 27 '21 edited Jul 27 '21

Given that the SCOTUS has ruled that boycotts enjoy 1A protections, and given that most laws of this nature tend to be found unconstitutional, good luck with surviving a court challenge.

51

u/Madman200 Jul 28 '21

I mean, it doesn't have to survive a court challenge. Fighting the law in court just needs to be more of a hassle than not boycotting Israel to a given company.

"Illegal" laws are routinely used to bully and intimidate people into following them because it's easier than fighting the law in court.

34

u/VeryStableGenius Jul 28 '21

Often, when a lawsuit is threatened, the states hurry to change the law to increase the threshold (contract size) that the law applies to, so the case is thrown out as moot. When a $1000 contract triggers a lawsuit, they'll raise it to $100,000. They really don't want these laws to reach the courts, because almost always the laws get thrown out, often in the first proceeding, and if not then on appeal.

I think too many people underestimate the influence that fundamental Christianity has had in American politics, foreign and domestic.

They’re impossible, beyond criticism. Anything you say that’s a criticism of Israel you’re labeled anti Semitic.

35

u/Lonsen_Larson Jul 27 '21

What, are they going to bomb the Ben and Jerry factory or occupy their offices or something?

15

u/Guy_Mckendrick Jul 28 '21

They gonna fill B&Js with settlements and claims it’s their own now.

So they’re launching rockets into Ben & Jerry’s?

Seriously if the Israeli government had just ignored Ben & Jerry’s, probably not too many people would have ever known what Ben & Jerry’s did.

82

u/bobbyrickets Jul 28 '21

Ben & Jerry's got free global advertising from this. They played chess while Israel's eating checkers.

I thought private businesses were allowed to sell to whomever and wherever they choose? Or is that just the line that conservatives trot out when it benefits them? Or more accurately, targets someone they don't like

they start threatening private companies for criticising them.

Not for criticizing them, but for not doing business where they want them to do business.

Governments threatening private companies is nothing new, really, although usually it's the other way around, with businesses doing business where you don't want them to do business. The US itself is a prime example of this practice.

I love how people are all Don’t Tread On Me and supporting the invisible hand of the market……until a private business stands up for human rights. Then they call in the calvary to pressure the business to bend to their will…..

A US company is being bullied by a foreign nation. What will the US gov do about out? Tune in next year when everyone forgets.

u/TheEricle Jul 27 '21

Are they going to send settlers into Ben and Jerry's all over the world?

u/SamuraiJackBauer Jul 27 '21

God this makes them look so weak.

They’re as soft as soft-serve and B&J don’t serve that.

It makes them look like a toddler in Walmart having a meltdown because they couldn't play in the toy aisle.

Coconut flake ice cream, white chocolate nibs, yoghurt-covered raisins, dry ice packaging to induce asphyxiation, and fiberglass shards to mimick 3rd degree thermal burns when WP gets lodged in your skin!

Israel has deployed bombers to your location.

Don't worry, they might land a bomb on your roof to warn you to leave your home (you won't have time to get any elderly family members or belongings out though) before they reduce it to rubble and cinders. And for shits and giggles because... uh... terrorists are in the buildings, they're also going to level a nearby hospital and school.

Also, if any international doctors try to help the wounded they'll be forced to kill them.

You know I was thinking Ben and Jerrys pulling out of Palestine territories while staying in Israel made it too small a step. But seeing Israel go ballistic at an ice-cream company does make me happy.

I hope what Israel fears in terms of public perception comes to pass.

Also of COURSE they had to throw "anti-semitism!" in there as an attempted justification.

As a side note, the idea of legislation against a boycott movement seems very unenforcable. You cant force soneone to buy from you
