Half the video is an homage to itself

462

u/QuasiQuokka Dec 04 '21

I mean, it's an ad for a video production tool, so in this case that works.

94

u/Bugman657 Dec 04 '21

I mean I already recognize them as the superior tripod and this still makes me want to buy one.

-31

u/cutelyaware Dec 04 '21

What I mean is that after showing all the neat ideas, it goes into a montage that's sort of a retrospective of all our fondest memories of what we just witnessed? "And who can forget when a ball was thrown into a tree....."

66

u/Grashopha Dec 04 '21

You’re really missing the point here. It’s an advertisement, for a product, made by someone paid to show how said product works. It just so happens, the product was used to make the advertisement.

The person was paid to show you how it works, which they did and keep your attention long enough that you want to know what it is they’re pitching, which it also did. It’s a good ad.

This is a somewhat common thing in the photo/video industry. Use your products to make your advertisement so you can show everyone how good it is.

2

u/cutelyaware Dec 04 '21

Oh, I'm sure it's an effective ad. I'm sort of congratulating them, and even a little grateful to see how easily I can be manipulated.

-3

u/GaianNeuron Dec 04 '21

Exactly. Those "shot on iPhone" ads seemed needlessly self-congratulatory, but it was this sort of thing that they were imitating.

46

u/ZeAthenA714 Dec 04 '21

It's showing an impressive video, and then it's showing how that impressive video was made thanks to a good tripod, which is the product being advertised.

10

u/forcepowers Dec 04 '21

How is it infuriating?

They showed a cool ad and then how the ad was made using the product. I enjoyed seeing how everything was done, made it much more satisfying.

3

u/Trottingslug Dec 04 '21

Pretty sure they're the result of someone testing a newish bot. Check their comment history. Just generic comments thrown against other random comments.

1

u/wdn Dec 04 '21

It's an ad for the gear shown in the second half.

234

u/luisless Dec 04 '21

Which is genius, show the power of the product by using it to make the ad..

4

u/WhoaItsCody Dec 04 '21

Don’t you ever wonder why we don’t see this more? Is it because most people wouldn’t notice? I dunno, but I agree it’s genius marketing because it’s 100% legit.

34

u/gluepet2074 Dec 04 '21

That is the best part for anyone wondering how certain shots were achieved. I was able to glean some cool tricks from the making-of sequence. Smart approach for marketing to their intended audience!

2

u/Schopenschluter Dec 04 '21

The medium is the message.

537

u/Zoeh91 Dec 04 '21

Manfrotto are legit really good tripods though. I think it's a good advert for them tbh

77

u/m8k Dec 04 '21

Gonna disagree with you there. I’m part of a few photography groups where tripods are a staple (real estate and architectural photography) and at least once or twice a week there is a “my manfrotto tripod broke, lost a leg, etc…” post.

I have one of their geared studio heads (405) and have had to get it repaired after fairly minimal use. I also bought one of their video heads a few years ago and had to return it because regardless of the setting on the baseplate, it would not pan smoothly.

I’ve found Benro/Induro to be a much higher quality and better value for the cost. Gitzo is top of the pack but excessively expensive.

45

u/Zellion-Fly Dec 04 '21

It all depends though, remember, you mostly only here if something goes wrong/bad in an event/product. The people who have bad experiences are the vocal part of the community.

So if you go by numbers, say Manfrotto has (random number)80% market capture in the professional/hard-core hobbyist community for Tripods, you are more likely to hear about the bad experiences of their product vs the other 20% just to sheer numbers. So that is not a realistic sample size of how "bad" their product is. But more a testament to how little you actually hear about their "poor" product.

19

u/m8k Dec 04 '21

From my own experience though, I’ve not been thrilled with the products I’ve purchased from them.

1

u/kie1 Dec 04 '21

Which brings in another aspect of data management, that personal experience does not equal to imperial data. It's always better to look at a overall concrete set of data that showcases all aspect instead of focusing on a Singal aspect. Not saying you are wrong, but just pointing out the potential flaw with arguing using personal experience.

14

u/SamSparkSLD Dec 04 '21

I’d rather take advice from someone with experience in the field and with the product over general product reviews.

14

u/DemocracyWasAMistake Dec 04 '21

"cannot trust the opinions of the masses" "cannot trust your own experiences"

Well fuck

4

u/Zoeh91 Dec 04 '21

Strange, I'm also part of photography groups for architecture, cityscape and long expo but we never get this problem. My tripods about 2 years old and does really well. Maybe they've changed suppliers since and the quality has decreased

4

u/m8k Dec 04 '21

I think their higher end stuff is better made and more reliable and I know their older gear is built like tanks. It is likely a skewed sample too because many people are buying cheaper stuff (055 series) and not their higher end offering where there might be more attention paid.

The photos I’ve seen of the damage has been leg sections falling out of locks breaking, primarily. Also, for their geared heads, developing play in one or more axis of movement. I know this problem isn’t unique to them, my Benro GWD has developed a little give as well but it cost less than $200 and my Manfrotto 405 was closer to $500 and is not nearly as smooth to adjust or use.

84

u/mi-nigle Dec 04 '21

Good advert. Poor products. They didn’t used to be, I used to love manfrotto too. Our old stock of video tripods were built like brick shit-houses and took the majority of abuse from students (I work in a university) and required little maintenance. They were due for replacement and what we got for more money was flimsy and pointlessly complicated. Then those were replaced with what we’ve got now and every week we have a stack of tripods to repair. So many of the parts have been made with plastic and they just won’t last long enough. I want to get Gitzo next but they’re too many pounds :-/

9

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '21

[deleted]

13

u/rpungello Dec 04 '21

High-end tripods (like Gitzo) are usually made from carbon fiber, which can make them lighter than those made from aluminum.

Of course some flimsy plasticy low-end tripod is gonna be lighter than both, and a top-end pair of carbon legs that can support 200lbs of gear is gonna weigh more than an aluminum model that can only support 20lbs.

But for the same load capacity, more $$$ is usually gonna be less weight.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '21

[deleted]

1

u/rpungello Dec 05 '21

Seems most tripods aimed at photographers just have a bag hook underneath, so the tripod can be fairly light while carrying (say on a hike), but can then be weighted down by the camera bag you were already carrying. Best of both worlds if you ask me.

34

u/INS4NIt Dec 04 '21 edited Dec 04 '21

I hate to break it to you, but the company that made Manfrotto garbage (Vitec Group) also owns most of the other tripod companies, including (from their website): Avenger, Gitzo, JOBY, OConnor, Sachtler and Vinten. The high end stuff is still good (especially fluid heads) but I've taken to buying cheaper carbon fiber legs from 3rd parties because... well, it's the same quality, and if I buy two I have an entire tripods' worth of spare parts, and it's still cheaper than getting official legs and having to deal with Vitec's shitty RMA portal if literally anything goes wrong with any of their brand's tripods

13

u/mi-nigle Dec 04 '21

While I agree with this, it wouldn’t fly with management and academics who LOVE named brands regardless of what we tell them. And even if Gitzo are under the same company, you only have to go to a Gitzo stand at a convention to immediately feel the difference in quality. All fine but we’d only be able to buy 1/4 of the amount of tripods we can get from Manfrotto. We’re stuck with them.

3

u/INS4NIt Dec 04 '21

I feel for you, that's very much the case for my personal kit rather than anything ""professional"". That said, I've been consistently surprised with the solutions the news station I engineer for have allowed us to get away with in the name of reducing cost

3

u/supadoggie Dec 04 '21

Go with Peak Design.

Started out as a Kickstarter, but has since made a lot of great, high quality, camera gear.

1

u/emailblair Dec 04 '21

Contact an executive at the company with this story. In my experience most companies' top executives take that kind of feedback seriously. They know that every customer that contacts them represents many more who have remained silent and sometimes a single letter spurs a conversation or investigation which leads to change. [Source: was a temp Executive Assistant for a few years]

7

u/heartyheartsy Dec 04 '21

What the fuck is it actually advertising? What’s the product? A round clippy thing that, what, things attach you? Why?

113

u/Bug_Photographer Dec 04 '21

Basically, if you buy Manfrotto tripods and gear, you'll be able to get steady shots at any angle or height.

The red dot is the Manfrotto logo.

60

u/seratonin_syndrome Dec 04 '21

It’s an ad for a company that makes photography gear. It’s targeted at people who are already in that profession, won’t make sense/be immediately obvious to people who aren’t

-8

u/Eggsandtuna4lunch Dec 04 '21

I think it’s actually targeted at people not in the industry. I’ve been a professional snapper now for 25 years (just saying) and know the brand. My experience with them isn’t great. Anyway, I thought perhaps they’d invented some new time saving super device, I did t look at it as a brand advert.

15

u/labsin Dec 04 '21 edited Dec 04 '21

It's targeting the ones at the firm choosing what to buy. In my experience, the same type of advertising and brand awareness for consumers also work for companies. In the end it's still a person choosing

3

u/saladroni Dec 04 '21

Why? Why would you name your child Macro?

I hope your channel grows big, but this is not the right way to promote my fella 😅 you will just get dislikes if you do this.

Make videos related to the trend, if any one of your videos go viral then right after your channel will do good!
