The suburbs of Cairo surrounds the pyramid on three sides.

They intentionally kept a strip of the desert untouched so that tourists can take pictures without getting a bunch of high-rises in the background.

The fourth side is the limestone plateau all the pyramids and other ancient structures stand on.

The Pyramid complex itself is in Giza, a separate city. Cairo and Giza are divided up by the Nile flowing in between them.

Also, I must say the traffic between the two cities is probably the worst I've EVER seen anywhere in the world. It took me no less than 4 hours to get from the airport in Cairo (where it took me a separate 2 hours to clear customs and immigration) to my hotel on the edge of the pyramid complex in Giza. Fuck that traffic.

Ya man as someone living in Giza calling traffic an Absolute nightmare is almost an understatement.

But there is a kind of endearment to it.

Cairo wouldn’t feel as lively as it is without the traffic.

That’s what I most love about Egypt, it’s sooo ALIVE

Dang would walking have been faster? I guess you had luggage and stuff. How was the trip besides that?

It was amazing. The people there are really nice. Most of them went out of their way to remind me again and again of how safe Egypt was (this was a few years after the Arab Spring uprising - I went in 2018) because they were really hurting from not having a lot of tourists. Food was super cheap (although for the whole trip I only had vegetarian food - I don't eat beef nor halal chicken, both religious restrictions). The best thing I found was motorcycle Uber rides (I later used them in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam too), these were much cheaper (we're talking less than a dollar for a 10ish kilometer ride) and had the ability to weave in and out of traffic jams much quicker.

About the traffic, it was only bad during rush hour. Coming in, my flight arrived at around 3 pm, so I got fucked. Going out, my flight left at around 1 am. Cab ride from my hotel (Giza) back to the airport at around 10 pm was just a little over 30 minutes.

So yeah, the route one way was 30 minutes but but during rush hour was 4 hours.

Cairo traffic is something else, well worth looking up on YouTube for those who are unaware.

I presume that you're a practicing Sikh?

u/spacerose 22d ago

And that’s pretty cool my friend!

9

u/SmokeAbeer 22d ago

It’s cool how they’re made of blocks, but like, they’re pyramid shaped.

Real life anti-aliasing

u/i_broke_wahoos_leg 22d ago

Really want to see them in person one day. Incredible history.

The big one was the tallest man made structure for 4 millennia if I'm not mistaken. Crazy to think about.

Here is a higher quality and less cropped version of this image. Inexplicably, the clouds are different and another truck is in the picture, though all other vehicles are in the same place.

Here is the source. Credit to the photographer, Hossam Abbas, who took this on November 25, 2014.

He posted this version on his Facebook page on December 29, 2017 with the following caption:

The great pyramids from Helwan The distance between Helwan and Giza pyramids is more than 20 km, and the picture was taken on a very net day after the fall of rain The picture was seen by millions around the world

Read up on the fall of tenochtitlan. Spanish conquistadors rode up on their steeds only to view a watery oasis, complete with pyramids, gold and a vast population thriving off an ancient irrigation system.

u/ixis743 22d ago

The Aztecs were absolutely brutal but yeah it must been an incredible sight.

5

u/dickpicsformuhammad 21d ago

Everyone is or has been brutal. It’s like how empires are built.

u/mr-jjj 22d ago

Cool!

10

u/yawningunimpressed 22d ago

Is it true there's a KFC like 400 yards away from them?

Astounding views of Pyramid

6

u/Diqmorphin 22d ago

No it's not. This is how you'd see the pyramids of Egypt after using a special lens, editing the photo in photoshop, uploading it to reddit and waiting till it's been compressed into pixels by reposting 10000 times.

0

u/Guavab 21d ago

This right here. From Maadi one can see the pyramids of Giza and Saqqara, and though impressive in every way, they were not this big. This is an edited photo.

My aunt and her husband toured Cairo in the early 80s. I'd love to visit but am too afraid of being kidnapped and murdered on youtube.

1

u/omar_hafez1508 21d ago

Bro what have you heard about Egypt?

1

u/p1ccol0 21d ago

US State Department has issued level 3 warnings to reconsider travel due to terrorism.

1

u/omar_hafez1508 20d ago

That’s mainly is Sinai which is an isolated part of the Egyptian map and the military has pretty much destroyed all of them.

The US state department makes any country that isn’t in North America and Europe sound like a warzone seriously.

1

u/tPlayer1980 22d ago

Does anyone know the exact spot ? Egypt is in my bucket list..

1

u/CommanderHobo 22d ago

Like Giza?

1

u/tPlayer1980 22d ago

Well..thanks,.. I just wanted the exact spot

1

u/CommanderHobo 22d ago

No worries, I was just confused. I forgot the rule of 10,000. Glad that I could help you learn something!

3

u/CommanderHobo 22d ago

29.9792° N, 31.1342° E , there is technically the EXACT spot

2

u/flying_ina_metaltube 22d ago

Pretty sure he's not asking for the exact spot of the pyramids, but the exact spot from where this picture was taken.

1

u/BetaKeyTakeaway 22d ago

Helwan, south-east of the pyramids and outside Cairo.

0

u/Supersnazz 21d ago

The internet. You can't get this view in real life.

1

u/gonorrhea-smasher 22d ago

That’s incredible

-5

u/butsuon 22d ago

It's a shame Egypt is such a shitty place to be.

0

u/cookie_dough171 22d ago

It was aliens are there is a boatload of proof. How do people not get that it's aliens, they do everything.even I was anal probed once! /S

2

u/omar_hafez1508 21d ago

Bet you thought it was in the middle of the desert.

2

u/MaryjaneinPA 17d ago

I did actually.

1

u/servietunionen 21d ago

Wow not how I imagined him

Who?

1

u/obiwanconobi 22d ago

Is the one on the left much smaller or is it just much further away?

2

u/omar_hafez1508 21d ago

It’s half the size of the other two

1

u/Rynxym 22d ago

What beautiful view

1

u/SkookemChoocher 22d ago

When I was there it was so smogy I couldn't see them until I got within a quarter mile.

1

u/Supersnazz 22d ago

This view is not possible in reality unless you have telescopic eyes.

1

u/RIP_Greedo 21d ago

It’s true that the pyramids are this close to the city but you wild never see them this clearly from that distance because of smog and haze.

1

u/EthosPathosLegos 21d ago

Got a higher res pic? I want to use this as my phone wallpaper

1

u/InkOnTube 21d ago

Damn that's a view.

1

u/rogan1990 21d ago

One of my good friends went there, said he was looking forward to it for his whole life and it was the biggest disappointment of anywhere he’s ever travelled. All due to the traffic and the fact that the country did so little to preserve the area of Giza from being overpopulated. Sad.

Gorgeous view. Didn't know they have clouds in Egypt too

-2

u/DouggPound 22d ago

Looks like deep-fried shit

0

u/GlassCityJim 22d ago

Only if you are looking through a long ass telephoto lens. That is not an accurate representation of what one would see with the naked eye..

1

u/hard-time-on-planet 22d ago

Similar to getting a picture of the moon looking really big against a landscape

https://garyhartblog.com/photo-tips/big-moon/

0

u/tubbana 22d ago

Was this that weird photo that is photoshopped for no apparent reason and nobody really knows who is the original photographer

2

u/the_colonelclink 22d ago

Well, it was from about 20 years ago, you may just be onto something.

0

u/Additionalcrowzero 22d ago

Every time they portray Egypt in movie all I can see is hot dessert and no city at all.

0

u/Grabow 22d ago

Is there a photo from this century?

0

u/pab_guy 21d ago

Are those trash piles?
