Rememeber, folks. This is what the Republicans said they wanted for an investigation. They voted against the bi-partisan commission that would have allowed them to appoint equal number of members and whoever they wanted.

They said the committees were more than capable of handling this.

Any complaints should be met with a harsh rebuke of them voting against the bi-partisan commission.

3k

u/steve1186 Minnesota 7d ago

Don’t forget, the bipartisan proposal would have given the GOP veto power over subpoenas. They could have squashed this investigation, but they voted it down and now the same investigation is happening. But with the GOP being limp and useless

459

u/Moscowmitchismybitch Michigan 7d ago

Why though? What's their play here? They must have some kinda bullshit planned yet.

307

u/steve1186 Minnesota 7d ago

It seems obvious - they’re going to screech about how Pelosi “kicked Republicans off the committee” so now it’s a partisan witch-hunt. I would bet my house that this is part of what Trump and McCarthy talked about in Florida last week

70

u/Moscowmitchismybitch Michigan 7d ago

That seems too obvious though. There's gotta be some other kinda shenanigans they're gonna try to pull. McCarthy threatened his own investigation, imagine the shit show that could potentially be.

191

u/cheertina 7d ago

That seems too obvious though

They're trying to get MAGA Republicans to donate, not slip a murder past Sherlock Holmes.

41

u/jedwards8th 6d ago

Yup. "Too obvious" is "MAGA cunning". Their idea of politic is to go Full Metal Karen 24/7

It's doing at least two things. They get to paint the committee as partisan and hopefully taint what comes to light. But it's also about controlling the optics of the insurrection. They're continuing the message that nothing actually happened at the capitol, and/or it wasn't serious, and/or anything that happened pales in comparison to BLM riots. That's why "lesser" committees can handle it. That's why an investigation is apparently beneath them.

If they agreed to a cooperative investigation that would tank their messaging over the severity of the attack.

Now they get to say it is partisan, and their dumb-fuck base (from the coal workers to the upper middle class moms) will never know it's only partisan because they killed the bipartisan one.

u/Moscowmitchismybitch Michigan 7d ago

Hopefully the Dems make it a point to remind people the GOP blocked the investigation this time.

This plays right into their strategy. "The democrats aren't letting us pick our members of the committee." The context you mention doesn't make it to the audience they're trying to play victim for.

441

u/Jwhitx 7d ago

They would do that shit anyways, so fuck em

135

u/Civil-Attempt-3602 7d ago

They will twist it like that no matter what the Democrats do.

The GOP strategy is to use their propaganda machine to convince their voters that everything Democrats do is evil, stupid, incompetent, whatever they think will resonate. Their end goal is to either get the Democrats to capitulate to their demands or cause their own side to turn on them for not being successful enough so that the GOP will win the next election because left-leaning voters won't turn out.

The only "win" in such a situation is for the Democrats to out-maneuver the GOP so that they can still accomplish some of their goals while they're still in power.

Having gym Jordan on the 1/6 committee would be like putting him in charge of an investigation into the rape of college students

5k

u/Sujjin 7d ago

Considering the only reason Jordan would have to be there is to derail and distract from the substance of the meetings i am more than glad she rejected him.

3k

u/Sup_Im_Ravi 7d ago

Lol, the funny part is we offered them a chance to have a committee where Pelosi couldn't reject McCarthy's picks, but McCarthy opposed that. Hope he enjoys the consequences. Reap what you sow🤣.

611

u/wickedsmaht Arizona 7d ago

Well well well, if it isn’t the consequences of his actions.

To be honest though we all know McCarthy will conveniently leave out the fact that they could have had a say and play this as a Democratic witch hunt.

What “consequences”? They’re going to claim it is all partisan theatre because Republicans were rejected from being on it, even though Liz Cheney is on it. They were never to engage in this in good faith and the attempted appointment of Banks and Jordan shows that.

Edit: I wasn’t implying that they wouldn’t say it wasn’t political theatre before this happened, but now instead of “Trump derangement syndrome” or whatever else, no Republicans they wanted on the committee will be used. Additionally, having someone like Jordan on it to make the hearings a circus is what they wanted. That way headlines aren’t “Person X says Trump wanted Pence hanged” but instead about Jordan getting into it with Person X.

494

u/glasshoarder 7d ago

She's not the only one on it, and the ones that'll be there will be the ones interested in pursuing a legitimate investigation.

They can claim whatever they want because that's what they'll do anyway. The GQP is post truth.

385

u/prometheus2508 7d ago

Just like the criminal break in of the SCI facilities during the Ukraine investigations. Bunch of the Republicans that "raided" the meeting "they were barred from" were in fact on the committees in attendance and simply chose not to attend prior.

My coworker was actually speechless when I pointed this out after she repeated some Fox headlines about the "Democrat only" meeting.

242

u/James-W-Tate 7d ago

Republicans trying to spin that event as partisan was such bullshit. I'm still pissed none of those representatives were arrested for illegally entering a SCIF with fucking recording devices.

This right here. Violating a SCIF should be prosecuted immediately after the occurrence and those involved given the maximum sentence.

These places are sacred when it comes to national security, violating them is inexcusable in Republican's 'clown car' game playing. There need to be harsh penalties when these types of acts occur, period.

Why do you refer to him as "Gym Jordan"?

Is it because Jim Jordan of Ohio helped to cover up the rape and molestation of multiple students?

Is it because Jim Jordan of Ohio aided and abetted the rape of multiple students?

Is it because the rape and molestation of students was allowed to continue unabated because Jim Jordan of Ohio helped to cover it up?

Is it because, based on his actions, Jim Jordan of Ohio must think it's ok to rape and molest students?

Is that why you refer to Jim Jordan of Ohio, condoner of rape and molestation, as "Gym Jordan"?

I live in Jim Banks district, and the email he sent out literally said this in bold letters. A direct quote from the email:

"If we are serious about investigating political violence, then we need to study not just the January 6 riot but also the hundreds of violent political riots last summer when many more innocent Americans and law-enforcement officers were attacked."

And he ended the email with "Further, I will not allow this committee to be turned into a forum for condemning millions of Americans because of their sincerely held beliefs."

So yeah, he's about as predictable as the rest of his fascist colleagues.

You know what, I hope they do investigate the BLM events. I want them to have to answer questions about who the agitators were when there are numerous reports of the agitators not being part of the BLM movement, but actually being white supremacists. I also want them to investigate why the police decided to use excessive force on these protests, but not on January 6. I want them to further investigate the violence in Charlottesville and other anti-BLM protest and why there were fewer arrests at those events compared to others. If they really want to open up this can of worms and equivalency, let’s do it for real then.

"That f---ing guy Jim Jordan. That son of a b----," Cheney told Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley on the phone, detailing the siege, according to I Alone Can Fix It, by Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker.

"While these maniacs are going through the place, I'm standing in the aisle and he said, 'We need to get the ladies away from the aisle. Let me help you,' " recalled Cheney, then the House of Representatives' No. 3 Republican, per the book. "I smacked his hand away and told him, 'Get away from me. You f---ing did this.' "

Also anybody else interested in why Liz Cheney has speaking channels to Gen. Miley?

Dick Cheney, her father, ran the department of defense for 4 years.

He was also President for 8.

Interesting and it seems to give credence to the fact the gatekeepers of American democracy felt threatened and had to communicate with each other.

The letter he helped draft doesn't just help give credence, it's proof positive.

A successful campaign to have all 10 living former U.S. secretaries of defense sign a letter warning President Donald Trump not to involve the military in his grievances over the election results took place between New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, said former ambassador and defense official Eric Edelman.

"Efforts to involve the U.S. armed forces in resolving election disputes would take us into dangerous, unlawful and unconstitutional territory," the former secretaries wrote in the letter, which was published as an op-ed by the Washington Post.

Edelman drafted and orchestrated the letter in consultation with former Vice President Dick Cheney, himself a former secretary of defense, along with help from former State Department adviser Eliot Cohen.

Liz Cheney apparently arranged the letter to the military saying please do not support a Trump coup signed by every living former Secretary of Defense. Because it was clear Trump was trying to get the military to sign onto a coup.

I think we are going to find out that the JCS intentionally tried to keep those National Guard units as far away from the Capitol as they could and unarmed because they thought Trump was going to try to use them to take control of the Capitol. Their evidence was that he wanted him there under the excuse that he needed his mob protected from 'antifa'.

Their closing argument was 'Presidents get to do things that they think will help the US be safe. Trump thinks winning a second term will help US National Security. Suck it.'

And every Republican Senator except Mitt Romney said yes please.

46

u/ZomNomNomBeeZ Michigan 7d ago

The logic they put forward means that it is completely okay for a presidential candidate to cheat their way into office, pardon all those caught cheating, then cheat/pardon to stay in power indefinitely. As long as the president claims that it is for the good of the country then its perfectly okay. They think that the only mistakes was having a weak VP that didn't follow the party playbook when called on to subvert the election.

This isn't democracy. If this happened in any other nation we would call it authoritarianism. But for some reason when the Republicans do it, somehow it's not.

For those looking for the full statement:

“The violent domestic attack on Congress on January 6th was the worst assault on the Capitol since the War of 1812 and the worst domestic assault on American Democracy since the Civil War. We are facing a radically new threat in the kinds of forces that combined to attack our government on January 6th. The future of our democracy is on the line. This assault was an attempt to overthrow the government.

“We need a comprehensive investigation as to who organized this attack, who paid for it, how they nearly succeeded in overthrowing a presidential election, why they did it and how we must organize ourselves to prevent anything like it from ever happening again.

“It had been our hope to establish a bipartisan, independent National Commission, but there is no prospect for that Commission at this time because of insufficient support from Republican Senators. Therefore, the House established the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol. The Select Committee on the January 6th Insurrection will investigate and report upon the facts and causes of the terrorist mob attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. It will also be charged with reporting its findings, conclusions and recommendations for preventing future attacks.

“Monday evening, the Minority Leader recommended 5 Members to serve on the Select Committee. I have spoken with him this morning about the objections raised about Representatives Jim Banks and Jim Jordan and the impact their appointments may have on the integrity of the investigation. I also informed him that I was prepared to appoint Representatives Rodney Davis, Kelly Armstrong and Troy Nehls, and requested that he recommend two other Members.

“With respect for the integrity of the investigation, with an insistence on the truth and with concern about statements made and actions taken by these Members, I must reject the recommendations of Representatives Banks and Jordan to the Select Committee.

“The unprecedented nature of January 6th demands this unprecedented decision.”

306

u/chicofaraby 7d ago

Isn't Rodney Davis the only one of the group who voted for the full bi-partisan investigation?

Also, Pelosi should publicly invite a few of the 34 (IIRC) Republicans who voted for the investigation to join the investigation. Just go around McCarthy.

Nothing about 2020 demonstrated a change to the 'political' calculus of the crazy train. As long as they keep pulling in money, they'll have gerrymandered elections and single issue voters driving to the midterms, while poison pilled democrats (Joe Manchin) get to play in the mud and get their hands wet with bloody business interests while pretending to be serious conerned representatives.

That was his first sentences publicly about it in fact. Made some comment that sounded as to infer for the first time in history a party was blocked from participating in a select committee. Except reality is the other party already burned a pick on a member of the opposing party, and only rejected two of the opposition picks. Two persons who have been especially vocally partial on this subject. They could have offered two different picks and had an actual majority with Cheney, he chose to make it “one party”, which it still isn’t.

Edit:corrected auto-correct

Recall the last time Republicans complained about being locked out of decisions. They stormed into meetings with the press at their side. Meetings that they had already been invited to.

The press conference they're giving right now shows exactly why they got kicked off. Jordan says Pelosi doesn't want to answer "the real questions" of why gas prices, illegal immigration, and violent crime are up. You know, three things that have no fucking thing to do with the Jan. 6th insurrection. And him and Banks are alleging that the insurrection only happened because the left "normalized" riots and looting.

And with all of them indirectly accusing Pelosi of being responsible for security being so light that day, and acting like that won't be looked into unless they're on the commission, this is proof positive that them being on there would have just been bad faith arguments while trying to spin the insurrection by Trump supporters as somehow the fault of the left.

112

gas prices? why not bring in the inevitable entropy of the universe also?

Good. The rape coach doesn't need to be around anyone but a cellmate.

53

u/throwaway_circus 7d ago

For anyone who doesn't know the horrifying extent to which serial rapes and sexual abuse was happening, while students begged Jordan to intervene:

Jordan was a wrestling coach at Ohio State during the time when the athletic department's doctor, Richard Strauss, was accused of sexually assaulting more than a thousand Ohio State athletes.

Some, like UFC champion Mark Coleman, have come out publicly. Multiple people, including a referee, testifed under oath that they told Jim Jordan directly about an incident, and were ignored.

Others have testified that it was an open secret that the doctor was assaulting students, but they were unable to get the help or cooperation of OSU staff, including Jordan.

It's a horrific story. This guy did so much damage to people's lives. From an SI article:

According to a report commissioned by Ohio State, before he was done, he would commit at least 1,429 instances of fondling and 47 instances of rape.

One former student testified that Jordan called him up, weeping and begging him to pressure his own brother to stop speaking up about Dr. Strauss' abuse:

a former captain of the Ohio State wrestling team told state lawmakers in a public hearing that Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, pleaded with him in 2018 to deny allegations sexual abuse of male wrestlers by a team doctor was well-known within the program but was ignored.

Jim Jordan called me crying, groveling, begging me to go against my brother, begging me, crying for a half-hour. That’s the kind of cover-up that’s going on there," Adam DiSabato told members of the Ohio House Civil Justice Committee about a conversation the congressman and him had on July 24, 2018.

I mean, it's hard to see how this wasn't planned by McCarthy.

Step 1: Nominate people who Pelosi clearly would never allow

Step 2: Pelosi rejects them

Step 3: You announce the GOP won't cooperate with the investigation without the people you nominated, despite you KNOWING certain people would never have been accepted.

Step 4: Democrats say "Okay, then bye." and go it alone

Step 5: You spend the next X months claiming the entire thing is a political hoax/witchhunt because it's not bi-partisan and doesn't include any GOP members, and your entire base all eat it up because they're too stupid to realize that you had TWO opportunities to, in good faith, have a bi-partisan commission but elected not to.

Pelosi did the right thing here. Jordan and Banks were intentionally selected as saboteurs.

Since McCarthy wants to play this game about "well now it's a partisan investigation" Pelosi's response should be "this investigation became partisan when the Senate GOP voted down a 9/11 style commission that had been negotiated in good faith with GOP input and agreed to by the members of the House GOP when over 30 of them voted 'yea'"

12

u/AspiringAuthor07 7d ago

Hey Kev, just a few reminders:

  • YOU and your Republican colleagues in the House pushed Donald Trump's Big Lie that the election was stolen.

  • YOU and your Republican colleagues in the House voted to overturn the will of the people.

  • YOU and your Republican colleagues in the House voted against Nancy's initial suggestion to investigate the events of January 6th - an Independent Commission modeled after the 9/11 Commission, which would have given the Minority equal power as the Majority in regards to appointments, investigative threads, subpoena power, and veto power.

  • YOU and your Republican colleagues continue to call January 6th a tourist visit and a peaceful protest and continue to claim the media and the cops (who saved your lives!) are exaggerating the events of that day, which the world witnessed with their own eyes.

  • YOU and your Republican colleagues forced Nancy's hand when it came to creating a Select Committee, which - by the way - is using the exact same setup and rules as your Benghazi Committee (which, you admitted back in 2015, was little more than a sham to bring Hillary Clinton's poll numbers down).

  • And now YOU attempt to appoint two men who also pushed the Big Lie and attempted to overturn the results of a Free and Fair election? That's like having Al Quaeda investigate 9/11 or an arsonist investigate the fire they started.

So, I say sincerely from the bottom of my heart to you and everybody who supports you and the legislative terrorists you call colleagues: Get the fuck out of here and fuck off with your sanctimonious, bad faith, gaslighting bullshit you spineless, wannabe fascist hack. Everyone with half a brain sees through your fake schtick and crocodile tears. 🖕 You'll never be fucking Speaker. Go ahead and not appoint any Republicans to the Select Committee - it's not going to slow the Democrats and Liz Cheney from going after the truth, which I'm sure will implicate many of your colleagues. Good luck with the fake, powerless, impotent outrage machine you plan on starting yourself in an attempt to cause a circus.

Anyway, thank you Speaker Pelosi for vetoing the appointments of Jim Jordan and Jim Banks; it was absolutely the right move. Good luck to you, Bennie Thompson, Zoe Lofgren, Adam Schiff, Pete Aguilar, Stephanie Murphy, Jamie Raskin, Elaine Luria, and Liz Cheney on getting to the bottom of what happened on January 6th and holding those responsible accountable. As I'm sure you're away from polling that was released as recently as today, the majority of Americans believe there's a lot we don't know about that day and are in support of your Committee to get to the bottom of it. Once again, you'll find yourself on the right side of History while McCarthy and the House Republicans will be consigned to the ages as the unpatriotic, dangerous, anti-democratic authoritarians they are.

59

u/DeliberateMelBrooks America 7d ago
