"Yo, man, it's crazy. So, like, my friend stole my phone while I was in the bathroom, and posted that as a joke. That's so craaazy, right?"

380

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

I actually had this happen. Complete with homophobic slurs. To my boss no less. I did get even though it took way too long

290

u/NotMilitaryAI Feb 03 '23

That would have definitely ended that friendship for me....

274

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

Never was a friendship thing. Film industry backstabbing at it’s finest

162

u/motorblonkwakawaka Feb 03 '23

I went to film school. By the time I graduated I turned heel and never looked back. Never mind the fact that the film industry in my country (NZ) somehow is the only place where normal labour rights and laws don't apply, making pay totally optional and giving film workers essentially no rights or protections. Pretty much the only way people make it through the first few years is by having a second job and never sleeping, or being lucky enough to have rich parents. But yeah on top of all that, it was the most toxic workplace I've ever encountered. Seemed like everyone out for themselves, no qualms stepping over anyone to get ahead, no such thing as honour or good will.

106

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

You nailed it. I spent 35 years in it and finally just walked away before I died in some sleazy hotel far from home

50

u/motorblonkwakawaka Feb 03 '23

Ouch 35 years. Well, hope you've found something a little more fulfilling! I've moved on to writing fiction. Don't need to hire expensive equipment, underpay or exploit people, or get up at fucking 4 in the morning just to hear the 1st AD tell us someone fucked up and filming won't start till after lunch. Just me, Microsoft Word, and a hot coffee, spilling stories :)

34

u/idontsmokeheroin Feb 04 '23

I’ve worked as a background actor in Hollywood for about 20 years off and on when I can. Honestly agree with everything you guys have said. It was hell during COVID. I’m barely 40 and I’m thinking about hanging up my hat. I already work at a bar as well and I started just taking more shifts at the bar rather than trying to get to 6AM call times to be on set for 14 hours. The film industry is so goddamn exhausting.

19

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23 edited Feb 03 '23

Well I got a good pension, everythings paid for so I guess it was worth it. Don’t miss the 80 hour weeks at all. There are some really good people in the biz, but some real dicks as well. Life on the road just got to be too much in my 50’s

Yeah! No ones going to stop my dream of dying in some sleazy hotel near my home!

2

I would read these books

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

There is a good one named “Below the Line”. A good and funny read that accurately describes the clown show. I know most of the people he talks about

It’s crazy film industry doesn’t pay well. Watching the latest avatar I was scratching my head wondering where $2billion went. I’m in construction and you can build a lot of stuff for that much money. I came to the conclusion they must pay everyone really well

8

u/jockheroic Feb 04 '23

It does pay well. At the top. Just about everyone starts out as a PA. They make pretty lousy money for the hours. Then, once you pick the dept you want to work in, the salary just about doubles every time you step up into the next role higher than your position in that department. However, you're a freelancer, so, no matching retirement contribution and healthcare comes out of your own pocket (unless you're in the union and their benefits aren't a whole lot better) and most of all, no job security. Always chasing the next job. The hours are pretty brutal, plus a lot of us spend a lot of time away from home. Damn, now that last poster is making me wonder if I can write a book.

2

u/motorblonkwakawaka Feb 04 '23

Hi, last poster here :) writing the book is the easy part! Getting published and making money though... I'm not published except one self-published one on Amazon, but its just a nice creative outlet for me. Maybe one-day!

6

u/Naki-Taa Feb 03 '23

You've just described employment conditions in the USA

7

u/Switchy_Goofball Feb 04 '23

I also went to film school and freelanced in the industry for a few years. It was the most exploitative, slimy, underhanded business I’ve ever seen. It’s just absolutely normal for people to expect you to work 16 hour days for free, even when you have a list of credits as long as your arm. It’s an absolute meat grinder of a career and I’m glad I got out of it.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

I don’t know how many times I heard “If you do this one for less, we’ll make it up to you on the next one”. That NEVER happens.

2

u/Switchy_Goofball Feb 04 '23

And there’s always some eager new kid willing to work for free because they’ve been convinced they need to “pay their dues” and get some experience. Such a horribly toxic environment.

You just described almost every working experience in America that isn’t managerial.

6

u/jamusnz Feb 04 '23

Peter Jackson sold out film workers rights in nz to please large media corporations....I fucken hated working film industry in New Zealand. I went back into radio and have had a lovely time for 20+years now.

3

u/motorblonkwakawaka Feb 04 '23

Yep. I lost all respect for him that day.

4

u/HitlersHysterectomy Feb 04 '23

Holy shitballs, right there with you. I started in film and one of the first things I learned was what a trust fund was. "Everybody's got a trust fund. You don't have a trust fund?"
What the hell is a trust fund?

But yeah. Overtime, work until you drop. I'd hit 40 hours by the middle of Wednesday. And overtime resets Sunday at midnight. Doesn't matter that you've worked 55 days straight. At that point it's easier to buy new underwear than wash the ones you have already.

And I did some time down under for a US studio. We had to be on call at 6 am for US meetings because the guys back home didn't want to interrupt their lunch. Cold stages, lousy food.

Tell ya what, though. 1st ADs are the platoon sergeants. Good ones get the job done and don't tolerate any bullshit. It's how it has to be.

A lot of people these days aren't directors - they're reactors. "I'll know what I want when I see it." Auteurs of the purest form.

3

u/MonocledMonotremes Feb 04 '23

Is it cuz the NZ film industry probably has the most interaction with US companies and our shitty labor practices leech through? It would still be weird though, since our movie industry is, I think, one of the most unionized industries we have.

3

u/motorblonkwakawaka Feb 04 '23

I think it's just because NZ is one of those countries where it is cheaper than the US to film precisely because the industry is so unionized there. We're a small country and our film industry got a colossal boost after Lord of the Rings, especially with Weta Workshop actually starting to get in ILMs level of competition. And one of the reasons it's so attractive for studios to film here is because they know people will be lining up to work 16 hour days for free in the hope that one day they'll "join the club".

2

u/seriouslynope Feb 04 '23

Sounds like the entertainment industry in the US as well

5

I didn’t do homophobic slurs.

But I did join 50 different Trump Facebook groups during the 2016 election.

It was also the 5th time he’d been warned to stopped logging into Facebook on the work computer.

6th time was a shopping list “mistakenly” posted that included most Chuck Tingle titles, sex toys, and lube.

He learned after that one.

I used to work in wireless sales a looong time ago - like the Razor was the biggest phone for years.

One morning we all got a text message from our assistant manager of his ass.

Confused of course.. I just ignored it until work.

He comes walking in shift to close and I said “I think you sent that text to the wrong person”

He looked perplexed - what text?

I showed him the text. His fiancé at the time had a little meth and things got bad. She texted all of his work contacts on his work phone. Including our district manager.

His only response was “that makes sense now why Todd sent me a picture of his ass”

7

u/RevLoveJoy Feb 04 '23

Todd is a good guy who can try to make light of a crummy situation. I like Todd.

3

u/alexagente Feb 03 '23

I actually had this happen to me once. My friends and I were drunk and I was complaining about some guy I was dating and she just snatched my phone and started texting him about how much a dick he was.

I was pissed at the time but she was right. Lol.

2

u/Mteigers Feb 04 '23

Right? Like how do you accidentally post something that was consciously written and posted by someone? Lol

3

u/IntrinsicSurgeon Feb 03 '23

For real. I’d probably just go with the Ambien excuse. That’s when I’ve said my weirdest things.

1

u/Glad_Inspection_1140 Feb 03 '23

Bruh the one time I took ambien, a car drove by looking like a limo. It wasn’t a limo. It was a normal car that looked like it had stretched as it was driving down the road. I was legit just hallucinating.

3

u/IntrinsicSurgeon Feb 03 '23

😂 That would trip me out. I didn’t hallucinate, but I sleepwalked. Apparently all I did was pee in my mother’s toilet (I had a bathroom connected to my bedroom, so I had no reason to be in hers) and screamed when she calmly asked what I was doing in there

Exactly this. Make a bold ass announcement about changing everything, watch shit explode for 48 hours, then fire up the rollback plan and start the apology machine. Netflix knew this could happen but they got valuable info about their base.

and they got free advertisement. lots of it.

47

u/Stoogefrenzy3k Feb 03 '23

I forgot all about that.. Thanks for the reminder. And I have stopped subscribing over a year ago since they last want to jump $2. I've had it, especially when they cancelled their series with no proper ending to their shows.

326

u/themindisall1113 Feb 03 '23

i was legit JUST about to text my family and tell them i was canceling

452

u/NoSaltNoSkillz Feb 03 '23

Already texted mine. When these changes go live and start charging, going to cancel until its revoked or until a series I want gets completed and cancelled and then ill buy a month.

I buy 4 screens, give me 4 screens. Double dipping b*st*rds

110

u/11B4OF7 Feb 03 '23

I’d prefer 1 screen and still have the option to stream 4k but Netflix only offers standard definition on 1 screen lol

57

u/PopCultureWeekly Feb 03 '23

Yeah who tf streams in SD. It should be illegal

3

u/Decent-Letterhead663 Feb 04 '23

I watch almost everything in 240 or 360 to save on data

10

u/WhiteHawk93 Feb 04 '23

Isn’t it at least HD 1080p on 1 screen? If not that’s absolutely awful.

32

u/11B4OF7 Feb 04 '23

720p currently last year it was 480p or something like that.

https://about.netflix.com/en/news/announcing-basic-with-ads-us

8

u/cozmoAI Feb 04 '23

480p in 2021 wut?? I would see blur even on iPhone mini screen

3

u/Dick_Lazer Feb 04 '23

Standard is $15.49 in HD, Basic is $10 in 720p (Basic w/ads is $7). Premium 4k is $20 a month now. Costs more than HBOMAX at $16 for 4k + no ads. Not to mention you can also get HBOMAX down to $12.50 with the yearly plan.

5

u/bdone2012 Feb 03 '23

They already had asshole pricing in that way. I think for a lot of people adding more asshole pricing was the last straw. Plus most people I know consider Netflix worth it because they share the account with their families or friends.

At least with the people I know, best case scenario is they’d come out with the same amount of subscriptions as they started with but in all likelihood they’d lose subscribers within the people I know. Obviously it’s a small sample but if that’s how most people use netflix it wouldn’t be worth it.

12

u/11B4OF7 Feb 03 '23

If they offered 1 screen 4k for 9.99 they would probably eliminate most of the sharing problem. Forcing people onto 4 screens for 4k has me sharing with friends cause I’m forced to have way more screens than I need.

76

u/ill0gitech Feb 03 '23

I now very rarely go to the office, and I used to watch Netflix on my commute.

My kid intermittently watches on her iPad.

The notion that we have to login every 30 days or have our devices locked out and need to call support is definitely making me consider canning my service

53

u/Drunkenaviator Feb 04 '23

I fly airplanes for a living. I use netflix from 5-6 countries a month. Any of this shit affects how I use it, I'm cancelling.

39

u/AshingiiAshuaa Feb 04 '23

Which airline did you say you worked for again, Drunkenaviator?

1

u/mia_elora Feb 04 '23

Do it. I mean, there's better services out there offering better shows with better pricing. Netflix wants to become Cable 2.0, apparently.

3

u/ill0gitech Feb 04 '23

I’m in Australia. It’s probably the best we have access to.

1

u/mia_elora Feb 04 '23

Disney, Paramount, Peacock, Prime, Apple?

4

u/ill0gitech Feb 04 '23

Apple have some great shows, but not breadth.

Prime has the worst user experience but a few good exclusives amongst some utter crap.

210

u/Wise_Ad_4816 Feb 03 '23

I pay for the highest package and have two kids in college in different states. Netflix won't get 3 accounts out of me, they'll lose the one acct I have. They better think long and hard, because I'm just one of millions thinking the same thing. We've been customers since the DVD-by-mail days. But Netflix isn't the only game in town anymore.

47

u/handsomesquidward90 Feb 04 '23

Same here. Even worse, compared to their fee, you can get other services combined. They are shooting themselves on the foot .

21

u/AshingiiAshuaa Feb 04 '23

Hulu+Disney+ESPN for the same price as the Netflix 4k plan

50

u/Wise_Ad_4816 Feb 04 '23

Look, my husband is always looking for ways to trim the budget. This seems like a classic case of Fuck around and find out. 😂

4

u/mattinatux Feb 04 '23

Am a budget-cutting husband. Can confirm. Netflix has been gone and we are better for it!

6

u/PossibilityMelodic Feb 04 '23

Exact same here.

4

u/EXEXEN Feb 04 '23

Don’t know if you have a Roku Tv or stream stick, but it’s da bomb. Tons of free shows, channels, movies, news etc. you pay once for the device, then pick what you want to pay for ala carte or just enjoy the free stuff. Also, Amazon Prime makes it about as easy as it can be to add and drop stream services too. Netflix doesn’t seem to have any decent original programming anymore.

3

u/MonocledMonotremes Feb 04 '23

Yep, the only thing standing between most people and piracy is convenience.

3

u/pixelgeekgirl Feb 04 '23

Yup. My mobile plan doesn’t give a crap that my “family plan” reaches across multiple households, nether should Netflix. I pay for the ability to stream multiple screens, give me my screens.

5

u/Wise_Ad_4816 Feb 04 '23 edited Feb 04 '23

Both kids have the same cell numbers on our family plan that they've had since junior high. If our health insurance can cover them in multiple states, Netflix can fuck off if they can't figure it out. 🙄

2

u/NoSaltNoSkillz Feb 04 '23

Honestly yeah, I end up finding myself watching all my other services. The only thing I'm watching Netflix consistently for is for the stand-up comedian specials, but the quality there is hit or miss.

u/Startrail_wanderer Feb 03 '23

6

u/raumbaren Feb 03 '23

I'm with you there. Netflix's content really isn't good enough for them to pull this shit. I'll just switch to Hulu and come back for a month or two at a time to binge the few good series they have.

4

u/NoSaltNoSkillz Feb 04 '23

Honestly I find myself watching Hulu way more often, and occasionally Disney plus. I might just replace Netflix with HBO Max and never come back. I love getting to see John Oliver stuff immediately

3

u/President_Skoad Feb 04 '23

Same, I pay for four screens and only one gets used for the most part.

My mom hardly watches. My brother doesn't use it as he uses Wako (kodi). My kid doesn't use it. I don't use it as I use Wako (kodi). Only person who uses it is my Dad and y he said he is fine with me canceling it and he will just stick with the Hulu/Disney+ package, I've also hooked him up with Kodi.

3

u/ZeEntryFragger Feb 04 '23

Can I welcome you to the seven seas of piracy? I have 4k tvs in my house but all of them are hooked to old laptops with wireless keyboards and mouses. My internet speed might tank when its nighttime but it better than having a recurring $60 bill when it can be easily done away with.

2

u/Sardonislamir Feb 04 '23

Canceling so that i am not an active payer when it goes live.

1

u/Josef_DeLaurel Feb 03 '23

Just pirate any seasons you want. Use a VPN if you’re extra cautious but most ISP’s don’t give a shit as long as you’re not downloading terabytes of data a week.

2

u/Blue2501 Feb 03 '23

Mullvad is a great VPN if anybody needs one

1

u/No_Crow_208 Feb 04 '23

I put all my family on IPTV with VPNs. I do subscribe to Paramount Plus simply because they brought back a few shows I love and want to support it.

1

u/NoSaltNoSkillz Feb 04 '23

What is IPTV?

1

u/SpecialistWeb3695 Feb 04 '23

Me too imma cancel until it’s revoked

16

u/nfcs Feb 03 '23

Yeah, the only reason I pay for the premium plan is that I share it with my sister and my parents free of charge. The minute they get their accounts blocked I cancel the subscription.

Where I live I can get HBO Max, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ all for the same price of that Netflix subscription. All without this bullshit and others like making me pay extra for 4k content.

Even better, downloading pirated content isn't even illegal here, only distributing it. So back to the pirate life I go for the half a dozen series that Netflix launches a year that are remotely interesting to me.

4

u/Doggleganger Feb 03 '23

I have to keep premium or else my mom will call and ask why she can't watch her shows. Don't want to have to deal with that call lol.

4

u/eskimopussy Feb 04 '23

back to the pirate life I go

Yep, this is where I'm headed. I was happy to pay a reasonable amount of money to do it the right way, but with Netflix being a bag of dicks, and a new streaming service popping up every fucking month and pulling content from services I'm already subscribed to, I'm over it. It was good while it lasted.

5

u/EddaValkyrie Feb 03 '23

I was double-checking whether it had really gone up or not yesterday. As soon as it went live I'd have to tell my mom to cancel her subscription (she travels for work so this wouldn't do for her) and my dad to downgrade his to basic since his children wouldn't be able to use it anymore therefore he wouldn't need any of the extra screens. And between the four of us kids, this new system would only be feasible for one of us because the rest of us travel too much (and I'm just travelling between college, my mom's and my dad's!). Truly an idiotic system.

3

u/KingVargeras Feb 04 '23

Already texted mine too 🤷‍♂️ I think I’m still going to cancel for a few months just as a message.

3

u/HellbenderXG Feb 04 '23

Do what you want cause a pirate is free!!

34

u/Aedan2016 Feb 03 '23

I’m working on getting a plex server going. I’m tired of being gouged

26

u/ShadowBannedAugustus Feb 03 '23

Sonarr + Jellyfin my fellow sailor.

2

u/tomistruth Feb 03 '23

Sonarr + Jellyfin

Does sonarr supports vpn download? I am still not sure how much it differs from apps like Popcorn that auto download torrents.

How is jellyfin compared to plex? Is it more lightweight? Does it support mobile devices?

3

u/travistravis Feb 03 '23

Jellyfin is opensource I believe. Not as polished as plex, but I prefer it. Sonarr - I don't think I've seen vpn options, but it has the benefit of being able to use nzbs in addition to torrents--you can add multiple sources and multiple downloaders.

4

u/snuff3r Feb 04 '23

Sonarr is just the search and scheduling tool. You want to connect it into sabnzbd which will do the downloading - and yes, it will connect to pretty much anything..

2

u/OptimalMain Feb 03 '23

You can find premade docker containers with arr suite + jellyfin or Plex. Most of them use gluetun to only download through VPN. I have a setup ready, just need some dedicated drives

1

u/csanner Feb 04 '23

Well sonarr & jellyfin to you too, sir!

u/RedSquirrelFtw Feb 04 '23

TBH I never left that plan, I just find it more convenient. I can get an actual video file, that I can play on any device or OS, don't have to rely on internet to be working to watch and no DRM or any of that BS either. I would seriously pay a small monthly fee if there was an official and legal torrent site where the money goes towards the producers of films, music etc.

2

u/dungone Feb 04 '23

I bet that, secretly, you have a Comcast subscription and you hate yourself on a very deep and profound level.

2

u/sir_ramen Feb 04 '23

My uncle let me on his account, and I still download just so I don't have to watch an entire movie at 720p or whatever it is.

u/FailsAtSuccess Feb 03 '23

Yep, because why was it in English for Spanish speaking countries?

328

u/JackSpyder Feb 03 '23

In fairness all of Spain is using just 3 Netflix accounts.

u/TheFriendlyArtificer Feb 03 '23

They love Basqueing in their thrift.

2

u/TheTinRam Feb 03 '23

This guy spits barça truth

3

u/UncomplementedGains Feb 03 '23

This is underrated af, great job!

0

u/joey0live Feb 03 '23

Same for other countries. I've read some comments, how they give their whole neighborhood their credentials... these are the aholes that is ruining for the rest of us.

6

u/JackSpyder Feb 03 '23

Right. I might be sharing mine but it's to my 3 siblings who are twin boys at 12 and my sister aged 15.

Doesn't feel like I'm abusing it paying for thr highest tier package.

1

u/joey0live Feb 03 '23

I defiantly agree with you. I share mine with my sis and parents. Anyone else who wants it, I tell them to buy it.

83

u/sryan2k1 Feb 03 '23

Because it's a US based company so all policy, documentation, etc gets generated here and then is translated to the target regions.

66

u/kx2UPP Feb 03 '23

Nice try NetflixTM

19

u/Pod_Racing_64 Feb 03 '23

That’s NetflixTM USA Division to you!

46

u/CamaroLS1 Feb 03 '23

Typically these types of articles are written in English and translated as needed. Edit: Also English is often provided globally due to such high usage.

I cancelled and bought a VPN instead lol

4

u/Makenshine Feb 03 '23

Maybe Netflix and WotC are playing a game of chicken to see who can shed a larger percentage of their customer base. And now both companies are are like, "well, this is a dumb game."

4

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

I doubt it. They've been testing these rules in various markets and are still proceeding, which suggests that they consider the outcome in those test markets acceptable. I don't like this either, but I think it's wishful thinking to think it's going to be substantially dialed back at this point.

4

u/MercurialBees Feb 03 '23

'According to The Streamable, Netflix says it was all a mistake — for the United States.'

I wonder if they'll still follow through later this year with some other BS.

2

u/tweedyone Feb 03 '23

Definitely, it's got major "/r/oopsdidntmeanto" energy for SURE

2

u/megjake Feb 03 '23

Very typical corporate behavior. Keep testing the waters of how much you can get away with. In this case Netflix dove head first, got out and said “I slipped in I swear!”.

2

u/BraidRuner Feb 04 '23

I cancelled mine because Tubi and Hulu and Fmovie means never having to say you are sorry.

2

u/darkeststar Feb 04 '23

It's either this or they went to South Park ratings route and went overboard with rules so that when they roll out less strict rules everyone will view it as a lesser version of this and be more accepting of it.

2

u/big_thundersquatch Feb 03 '23

Canceled my account yesterday. Have no plans on resubbing for the foreseeable future. Password sharing aside, the price hikes, constant canceling of shows, reduction of devices you can sign into, share, etc have continued to make the platform less and less appealing to me.

3

u/bannacct56 Feb 03 '23

It's too late now. I've already canceled and ain't going back. But it doesn't matter because you've already told us Netflix that you were going to do this. Whether it's today or next week you're going to do this

1

u/Eric_Partman Feb 03 '23

How many did?

1

u/Morphchalice Feb 03 '23

This could be the Wizards of the Coast OGL fiasco all over again

1

u/Dixo0118 Feb 03 '23

Didn't they do the same thing with the ads? They said their ad breakdown was leaked

1

u/cha0z_ Feb 03 '23

yes, they were thinking that when they draw the line they will have higher profit. Well, no - this time the calculations didn't turn out correct. ;) f them!

1

u/freedomofnow Feb 03 '23

Yep. They leak shit to test the waters, thus getting plausible deniability.

1

u/BugStep Feb 03 '23

Took a page from Wizards of the coast huh?

1

u/catalystkjoe Feb 03 '23

Cancelled mine immediately. They honestly just reminded me I forgot to cancel it earlier

1

u/MugenEXE Feb 03 '23

The wizards of the coast / hasbro method.

1

u/mtron32 Feb 03 '23

Would it even be that many? If I didn't subscribe to this sub, I'd have never known or cared, that's probably the vast majority of netflix subscribers.

1

u/garlicroastedpotato Feb 03 '23

I didn't even think they were that bad. Logging into one Wifi location a month? Like people are sharing Netflix accounts with people they don't even see every month?

1

u/dupsmckracken Feb 03 '23

As a D&D player experiencing the OpenDND movement that started like 3 weeks ago, the actions of netflix are even more hilariously idiotic

1

u/skylla05 Feb 03 '23

Are there numbers? Because I have a feeling it's significantly less than reddit thinks

1

u/Sethdarkus Feb 03 '23

Or how many troops they effect

1

u/gordo65 Feb 03 '23

"The trial balloon that we intentionally floated was shot down, so now we're claiming it was an accident."

1

u/Ksan_of_Tongass Feb 04 '23

I'm one of the many. At the part where they ask for a reason why, I wrote, "I travel constantly for work, as do many people. Suck it and good luck."

1

u/SuddenlyDeepThoughts Feb 04 '23

I cancelled mine about two days ago. I like to think I helped in that decision. Too little too late though. We gone.

1

u/Kevin-W Feb 04 '23

I love how they say "it was an error". No it wasn't. They're trying to weasel their way out of it.

1

u/jamughal1987 Feb 04 '23

They are dead now just like bockbuster.

1

u/ghostdate Feb 04 '23

The error was posting it early, not the plan proposed in the post.

1

u/Kingjingling Feb 04 '23

I bet everybody saw this coming. Reminds you of PayPal saying they're going to fine everybody if you say anything they disagree with
