It's only an accident once they saw how many people cancelled their subscription

329

u/themindisall1113 Feb 03 '23

i was legit JUST about to text my family and tell them i was canceling

449

u/NoSaltNoSkillz Feb 03 '23

Already texted mine. When these changes go live and start charging, going to cancel until its revoked or until a series I want gets completed and cancelled and then ill buy a month.

I buy 4 screens, give me 4 screens. Double dipping b*st*rds

u/11B4OF7 Feb 03 '23

I’d prefer 1 screen and still have the option to stream 4k but Netflix only offers standard definition on 1 screen lol

58

u/PopCultureWeekly Feb 03 '23

Yeah who tf streams in SD. It should be illegal

3

u/Decent-Letterhead663 Feb 04 '23

I watch almost everything in 240 or 360 to save on data

9

u/WhiteHawk93 Feb 04 '23

Isn’t it at least HD 1080p on 1 screen? If not that’s absolutely awful.

32

u/11B4OF7 Feb 04 '23

720p currently last year it was 480p or something like that.

https://about.netflix.com/en/news/announcing-basic-with-ads-us

8

u/cozmoAI Feb 04 '23

480p in 2021 wut?? I would see blur even on iPhone mini screen

3

u/Dick_Lazer Feb 04 '23

Standard is $15.49 in HD, Basic is $10 in 720p (Basic w/ads is $7). Premium 4k is $20 a month now. Costs more than HBOMAX at $16 for 4k + no ads. Not to mention you can also get HBOMAX down to $12.50 with the yearly plan.

They already had asshole pricing in that way. I think for a lot of people adding more asshole pricing was the last straw. Plus most people I know consider Netflix worth it because they share the account with their families or friends.

At least with the people I know, best case scenario is they’d come out with the same amount of subscriptions as they started with but in all likelihood they’d lose subscribers within the people I know. Obviously it’s a small sample but if that’s how most people use netflix it wouldn’t be worth it.

11

u/11B4OF7 Feb 03 '23

If they offered 1 screen 4k for 9.99 they would probably eliminate most of the sharing problem. Forcing people onto 4 screens for 4k has me sharing with friends cause I’m forced to have way more screens than I need.

I now very rarely go to the office, and I used to watch Netflix on my commute.

My kid intermittently watches on her iPad.

The notion that we have to login every 30 days or have our devices locked out and need to call support is definitely making me consider canning my service

53

u/Drunkenaviator Feb 04 '23

I fly airplanes for a living. I use netflix from 5-6 countries a month. Any of this shit affects how I use it, I'm cancelling.

41

u/AshingiiAshuaa Feb 04 '23

Which airline did you say you worked for again, Drunkenaviator?

1

u/mia_elora Feb 04 '23

Do it. I mean, there's better services out there offering better shows with better pricing. Netflix wants to become Cable 2.0, apparently.

3

u/ill0gitech Feb 04 '23

I’m in Australia. It’s probably the best we have access to.

1

u/mia_elora Feb 04 '23

Disney, Paramount, Peacock, Prime, Apple?

5

u/ill0gitech Feb 04 '23

Apple have some great shows, but not breadth.

Prime has the worst user experience but a few good exclusives amongst some utter crap.

1

u/newInnings Feb 04 '23

You should.

You know the support queues are going to be long

u/Wise_Ad_4816 Feb 03 '23

I pay for the highest package and have two kids in college in different states. Netflix won't get 3 accounts out of me, they'll lose the one acct I have. They better think long and hard, because I'm just one of millions thinking the same thing. We've been customers since the DVD-by-mail days. But Netflix isn't the only game in town anymore.

48

u/handsomesquidward90 Feb 04 '23

Same here. Even worse, compared to their fee, you can get other services combined. They are shooting themselves on the foot .

23

u/AshingiiAshuaa Feb 04 '23

Hulu+Disney+ESPN for the same price as the Netflix 4k plan

51

u/Wise_Ad_4816 Feb 04 '23

Look, my husband is always looking for ways to trim the budget. This seems like a classic case of Fuck around and find out. 😂

4

u/mattinatux Feb 04 '23

Am a budget-cutting husband. Can confirm. Netflix has been gone and we are better for it!

6

u/PossibilityMelodic Feb 04 '23

Exact same here.

3

u/EXEXEN Feb 04 '23

Don’t know if you have a Roku Tv or stream stick, but it’s da bomb. Tons of free shows, channels, movies, news etc. you pay once for the device, then pick what you want to pay for ala carte or just enjoy the free stuff. Also, Amazon Prime makes it about as easy as it can be to add and drop stream services too. Netflix doesn’t seem to have any decent original programming anymore.

3

u/MonocledMonotremes Feb 04 '23

Yep, the only thing standing between most people and piracy is convenience.

3

u/pixelgeekgirl Feb 04 '23

Yup. My mobile plan doesn’t give a crap that my “family plan” reaches across multiple households, nether should Netflix. I pay for the ability to stream multiple screens, give me my screens.

7

u/Wise_Ad_4816 Feb 04 '23 edited Feb 04 '23

Both kids have the same cell numbers on our family plan that they've had since junior high. If our health insurance can cover them in multiple states, Netflix can fuck off if they can't figure it out. 🙄

2

u/NoSaltNoSkillz Feb 04 '23

Honestly yeah, I end up finding myself watching all my other services. The only thing I'm watching Netflix consistently for is for the stand-up comedian specials, but the quality there is hit or miss.

1

u/jessid6 Feb 04 '23

Exactly! Two kids in college and I travel for work. So I’m gonna be locked out? Assholes

1

u/beenthere7613 Feb 04 '23

Same! We were also a test account for streaming, for 4 screens, etc. The only reason we're still paying is for small grandchildren to watch cartoons: two households, 3 hours apart.

If they do this, we'll just purchase another Disney/Hulu for the away grandkids and cancel Netflix.

1

u/RevLoveJoy Feb 04 '23

Similar boat. HBO Max hit me up the other month, $50 "buy now" bargain for a year on any 4 devices. By Netflix.

1

u/Lucifer2695 Feb 04 '23

We have a 5 screen family account. Used by people in 3-4 different countries. This would be ridiculous.

1

u/Groundbreaking-Bar89 Feb 04 '23

Seriously, used Netflix since the old times, when people would say, “you rent movies by mail?”

1

u/Gasfires Feb 04 '23

Are you me?

110

u/Startrail_wanderer Feb 03 '23

Already cancelled it

7

u/raumbaren Feb 03 '23

I'm with you there. Netflix's content really isn't good enough for them to pull this shit. I'll just switch to Hulu and come back for a month or two at a time to binge the few good series they have.

5

u/NoSaltNoSkillz Feb 04 '23

Honestly I find myself watching Hulu way more often, and occasionally Disney plus. I might just replace Netflix with HBO Max and never come back. I love getting to see John Oliver stuff immediately

3

u/President_Skoad Feb 04 '23

Same, I pay for four screens and only one gets used for the most part.

My mom hardly watches. My brother doesn't use it as he uses Wako (kodi). My kid doesn't use it. I don't use it as I use Wako (kodi). Only person who uses it is my Dad and y he said he is fine with me canceling it and he will just stick with the Hulu/Disney+ package, I've also hooked him up with Kodi.

3

u/ZeEntryFragger Feb 04 '23

Can I welcome you to the seven seas of piracy? I have 4k tvs in my house but all of them are hooked to old laptops with wireless keyboards and mouses. My internet speed might tank when its nighttime but it better than having a recurring $60 bill when it can be easily done away with.

2

u/Sardonislamir Feb 04 '23

Canceling so that i am not an active payer when it goes live.

1

u/Josef_DeLaurel Feb 03 '23

Just pirate any seasons you want. Use a VPN if you’re extra cautious but most ISP’s don’t give a shit as long as you’re not downloading terabytes of data a week.

2

u/Blue2501 Feb 03 '23

Mullvad is a great VPN if anybody needs one

1

u/No_Crow_208 Feb 04 '23

I put all my family on IPTV with VPNs. I do subscribe to Paramount Plus simply because they brought back a few shows I love and want to support it.

1

u/NoSaltNoSkillz Feb 04 '23

What is IPTV?

1

u/SpecialistWeb3695 Feb 04 '23

Me too imma cancel until it’s revoked

15

u/nfcs Feb 03 '23

Yeah, the only reason I pay for the premium plan is that I share it with my sister and my parents free of charge. The minute they get their accounts blocked I cancel the subscription.

Where I live I can get HBO Max, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ all for the same price of that Netflix subscription. All without this bullshit and others like making me pay extra for 4k content.

Even better, downloading pirated content isn't even illegal here, only distributing it. So back to the pirate life I go for the half a dozen series that Netflix launches a year that are remotely interesting to me.

3

u/Doggleganger Feb 03 '23

I have to keep premium or else my mom will call and ask why she can't watch her shows. Don't want to have to deal with that call lol.

4

u/eskimopussy Feb 04 '23

back to the pirate life I go

Yep, this is where I'm headed. I was happy to pay a reasonable amount of money to do it the right way, but with Netflix being a bag of dicks, and a new streaming service popping up every fucking month and pulling content from services I'm already subscribed to, I'm over it. It was good while it lasted.

5

u/EddaValkyrie Feb 03 '23

I was double-checking whether it had really gone up or not yesterday. As soon as it went live I'd have to tell my mom to cancel her subscription (she travels for work so this wouldn't do for her) and my dad to downgrade his to basic since his children wouldn't be able to use it anymore therefore he wouldn't need any of the extra screens. And between the four of us kids, this new system would only be feasible for one of us because the rest of us travel too much (and I'm just travelling between college, my mom's and my dad's!). Truly an idiotic system.

3

u/KingVargeras Feb 04 '23

Already texted mine too 🤷‍♂️ I think I’m still going to cancel for a few months just as a message.

3

u/HellbenderXG Feb 04 '23

Please do. Save that money for something important and explore the high seas in the meantime 🏴‍☠️

2

u/OhioVsEverything Feb 03 '23

Since you mentioned it. How many other households are/we're using your account?

Do you think any would subscribe on their own?

1

u/themindisall1113 Feb 04 '23

i pay for 4 screens between my brother, mother and sister. also sharing my pw with another friend. none of them will subscribe on their own lmao.

2

u/rebelwithalostcause Feb 04 '23

They'll do it eventually. Might as well cancel now anyway unless there's something unique you're actively watching.

2

u/cohortq Feb 04 '23

I've been a Netflix customer for 2 decades from DVD to streaming and I am 100% committed to canceling when this goes live.

2

u/xcalibre Feb 04 '23

do it, netflix needs a kick in the ass for this horseshit

1

u/dungone Feb 04 '23

Wow so half of Latin America is going to be without a Netflix account now?

1

u/AltimaNEO Feb 04 '23

Too late, oh well

1

u/HellbenderXG Feb 04 '23

Not too late to do it. If Netflix tried this once, they'll try it again, until most users submit to this toxic practice.

Don't support them while they fuck you over

1

u/Glam_SpaceTime Feb 04 '23

Already did a few days ago, the entire household used my account and we like to travel. I was serious not having it to pay extra because our phones weren’t connected to the wlan at home after 25 days
