why is the internet speed on my laptop so slow? Solved

my hp omen 16’s (windows) internet speed has become incredibly slow today (reaching barely 1mbps) for some reason, even though my phone (iphone 11) is behaving normally (around 200mbps) and both are connected to the same network. i’ve checked the task manager for any background processes but network usage is at 0%. the issue persists even when changing between 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz networks. anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it?

Check the power plan settings, there could be a setting for your wifi adapter to put it in a power saving mode with reduced performance

reboot your router/ap first. if same connect to another network as a test( you can use your phone as a hotspot). this will tell whether it's the router/ap or your wifi adapter

i think it might be an issue with the router. what should i do from here?

Plug in the ethernet cable between router and laptop, then test

Have you fully shut down your laptop and restarted it?

Also - when you say your iphone is fine - have you tested it with the mobile data temporarily disabled to ensure it's not your cellphone network being used?

thanks for your advice! speed is still the same even with the ethernet cable connected, so maybe i was wrong and it is a computer problem. i’m using wifi on my phone, actual data is horrible inside my house (10 mbps). also, curiously enough, the wrong network provider is showing up on my laptops speed test (i’m supposed to be using movistar but it says i’m using vodafone), but the right one shows up on my phones speed test. might this be related to the issue?

You've ruled out an individual adapter problem.

My gut feeling is that it's your router - and likely solvable by switching the router off for a minute or three - then powering it back on.

Is there another laptop/PC in the house that you can connect to the router to tests.

On both the laptop and iPhone, go to www.whatismyip.com

The public IP addresses should be the same - if they're different, maybe you're connected to a different Wi-Fi point on your phone?

lol turns out it was a problem with the extender (we’ve always had issues with these things). thank you for your advice!

reset it or call the router manufacturer for support options. or just replace it
