Roommates PC has faster internet Open | Networking

We just moved into a new place. It is just him and I. When we set up our internet and both our PCs using a wired connection, he was getting about 530 Mbps download and I was only receiving about 300 Mbps. We have the same network adaptor settings and our drivers are up to date. I tried swapping out ethernet cords, resetting network adaptor settings to default, etc. Any advice on how I could get my speed to match his?

Monitor your CPU/Memory usage during your next Speedtest and see if you notice either nearing 100%. I’ve seen both Antivirus and applications like Glasswire (monitoring) cause these issues, even on some newer hardware. Your next steps would be to check/confirm drivers for the network card.

I just ran the test and both CPU and Memory got to about 15%, I then attempted to auto-update each network adaptor driver and they all said I had the latest updates. Are there other drivers that may affect this outside of 'Network adapters'? All of my main drivers are up to date, I have not gone through all the others.

Highly unlikely, but just to verify - are you connected directly to the motherboard on your computer? Or are you docked/using some USB adapter?

Assuming directly to your Motherboard - if the router isn’t too far, could you try a different cable and/or relocating to the same room and retesting? You could also remove the router from the equation in most setups and connect directly to the modem, just make sure to reboot in-between connecting your devices so that leases can be renewed properly. This is simply troubleshooting.

You could also try testing with a laptop if available - just to verify the cable, or having your roommate test with his PC on the cable.

I would assume I'm connected directly to the motherboard but it's a prebuild so I'm not sure. Is there a way I could check? I have tried all three types type of ethernet cables that I know of. I've rebooted the router twice now. I'm sorry if I come off frustrated, trust me I'm more then happy with 300 mbps. I just want to have the same benefits as the person paying the same as me.

If you’re physically plugged into the back of the PC and don’t have a USB adapter/dongle hanging out with the Ethernet cable connected to that, you’re directly wired into the motherboard.

It can be extremely aggravating, I was fighting the issue with my Antivirus for around 2 weeks. I’m sorry if I’m redundant and somebody’s already asked this, but you don’t have any Ethernet switches between you and the router, right? Just a straight shot from the computer to your router.

Few other things - Hopefully you’ve got a standard Ethernet card (i.e: Intel-1217) and not one from the “Killer” lineup. I’ve had extremely odd issues with the Killer Ethernet cards.

Perhaps you need to try a RAW Speedtest using something like iPerf where we can rule out a lot of factors including CPU/Memory constraints.

I am in fact, connected through "killer" its not the name of ethernet connection but it is something constantly running on my pc. How could I try a RAW speed test?

Does your roommate have access to log into the router? He may have set a qos setting. It’s one of the few possibilities after reading through everything else.

You can sometimes prioritize one machine other the others in the network in your router settings. You should check that. I know that my AWM Fritz.Box has this setting and I actually had to activate it, otherwise my main PC wouldn't get the bandwidth I wanted.

Maybe your computer doesn't allow the speeds that he can get. Your speed is only as fast as the slowest piece.

At my old place I was getting 700

Well then! I'll just leave my first comment as an informational note.

If you said at your last place you got 700 then I don't know what's wrong, but 300 is more than enough. I can game with no lag with just 50, so your 300 is plenty

But me want more

Edit: I am also paying for 500, so if he reaches those numbers I would like to aswell

You’re both on the same version of Windows using the same browsers with the same exact extensions when testing this connection yes?

Yessir

u/_Skellingt0n_ Aug 16 '22

You’re both connecting to the same exact server when testing as well correct? I’m assuming you’re using speedtest . net.

Have there been any changes to your PC since switching to this new place? Any hardware changes, new software downloaded, any virus issues, and firewalls changes, and has the roommate done any of the above?

Also, are you both using the same exact type of Ethernet, either 5e or CAT 6 preferably?

1

u/Stinke_monke Aug 16 '22

No changes to either of our hardware or software that I know of. As for the ethernet cable, I used the same cord to test each computer.

Okay, we’re dwindling down the possible issues which could be a lot so.

Are you both using the same antivirus program? If so is it up to date for both of you?

1

u/Stinke_monke Aug 16 '22

We are both using the same antivirus and both updated today

1

u/_Skellingt0n_ Aug 16 '22

Okay, open your CMD as an admin please and enter:

netsh int ip reset

1

u/Stinke_monke Aug 16 '22

Okay done

Edit: Still getting about 310 mbps

We are both using the same antivirus and updated it today

We can manually change the speed of devices connected to the same internet. If your IP has got an app, then check there. Your friend could have made your speed slow for you for him to get much more.

u/Stinke_monke Aug 16 '22

I watched him setup his pc and say "holy shit I'm getting 500 download" lmao

1

u/LeadershipFalse7064 Aug 16 '22

check for updates on your drivers, as it could be a driver issue.

Anyway, there ends my expertise on this matter. Update if your issue is solved.

u/DonkeyTron42 Aug 16 '22

How fast is your connection directly to your room mates computer? If it's gigabit, then the issue is not your computer.

1

u/Stinke_monke Aug 16 '22

How do I test this?
