Lol. The first time I played Wii I didn't know you could customize the players. There was a mii that looked exactly like the host of the party I was at. I spent the whole time thinking it was an incredible coincidence that he had found a video game with a character that looked just like him.

When I was like 17 I said I wanted a mentally challenged child to watch him run into a glass door. Fast forward to 34 and I have a 6 year old autistic son, and my normal teenage daughter is the one running into glass doors. Also I'm kinda happy it worked out like this because little dude straight pulls me out of depressive slumps with his excitement and wonder. He's just too damn clever for his own good, like when he closes the glass door on his sister.

I know this is just a joke, but piercings don’t really set off metal detectors! I was even able to go into an MRI machine with them, recently. It seems most piercing-grade metal isn’t affected by magnets.

Metal detectors are able to detect non-ferrous metals, so it doesn't matter if they're magnetic or not.
Piercings don't normally set off metal detectors because they're not configured to be that sensitive. They are certainly capable of detecting even very small amounts of metal, and the larger the group of piercings are, the more likely that they'll cross the threshold and set off the alarm.

u/RevolTobor 12d ago
I had a pair of black leather boots when I was a teenager that would set off the metal detectors at the airport all the time. Turns out it was the metal rings for the shoelaces. Had to get searched with the handheld metal detector and get padded down every time.

At some point I think body modification goes from just aesthetic preferences to being full-on body dysmorphia and mental health issues. Not saying he has to be clinically insane to do all that, but rather he probably did it due to some deep-seated, irrational insecurities about his body, and/or some insecurities about a lack of control over his body and appearance.
Like nobody gets plastic surgery when they’re completely secure and satisfied in their appearance and body (Not talking about reconstructive plastic surgery). Same idea here
151
u/jazzkott 12d ago
Not saying he has to be clinically insane to do all that
there is no way this is comfortable. I would say he has very bad body dysmorphia.
38
u/SnooMaps9864 12d ago
He’d have to have body dysphoria to put himself at this great of a risk. It can be incredibly dangerous to have that many piercings in. That’s 100+ holes that can easily be infected if they aren’t properly cleaned. The piercings around the mouth are the most concerning because they’re going to scrape away at his teeth and cause oral damage. Given the amount of metal he has in it won’t be long until he does permanent damage (assuming he already hasn’t)
→ More replies20
u/hXcPickleSweats 12d ago
It has to be uncomfortable and inconvenient. I have 1 dermal on my cheekbone and it gets annoying and caught. Radiographer here, we actually usually use a metal detector wand to check for any missed / hidden metal objects before we let patients into the main MRI room. You'd be surprised at the things people forget has metal in it.
→ More replies11
u/Ilikeburgers6508 12d ago
Can you give examples I’m curious, has there ever been a case of someone making a mistake and forgetting that something was metal and then they go in?
19
u/-dab8- 12d ago
So, most piercings are not magnetic (thank heavens), so they are not at risk of being pulled on, but can heat up and even cause burns depending on where and what they are. Also when we image we get a black hole around the piercings, so it less than ideal if the piercings are in the area we are looking.
As for things that have made it into the scanning room that are bad or less than ideal, goodness the list is long. A coworker fried someone’s hearing aids, we often have people with ear or nipple piercings they can’t remove, some partials (dental) are metallic, and some are even magnetic (coworker had a ladies false teeth come out of her mouth and stick to the magnet top, kinda wish I’d seen that one actually), extra scary is if there is metal in the eyes that we don’t know about (we screen pretty intensely for this), aneurysm clips, pacemaker/defibrillator, etc.
→ More replies11
u/Ilikeburgers6508 12d ago
Very interesting, thanks, I could imagine mistakes are rare considering how bad it could potentially be. The story about the teeth is pretty funny it made me laugh but the eyes and/or anything else internal sounds like it could get pretty gruesome quick, I’m gonna do some research myself to see if I can find anybody who’s a victim to this dire mistake.
11
u/-dab8- 12d ago
Yeah, it can be REAL bad. It’s exponential to the amount of magnetic metal. Paper clip? You’ll feel it pulling hard but you can hold it.
Fire extinguisher? Would be a missile that you couldn’t hold on to no matter how hard you tried.
Once a hospital bed got sucked into the magnet. The patient died. (Thank heavens not at my hospital but still horrific.)
→ More replies7
u/Ilikeburgers6508 12d ago
Truly sounds like a horrific way to go and especially witness. I’m pretty sure I saw an image of a hospital bed that had gotten sucked into one but luckily nobody was inside and it could have been a prop to demonstrate what could happen, you mind me asking how you came about working in that field?

Many are also implant grade titanium. Nickel allergies are super common and stainless steel can have nickel in it
6
u/eatsbaseballcards 12d ago
This. Good quality jewelry is made of implant grade titanium and is highly polished to be very smooth. Of course there are other materials but for most common types of jewelry this is the standard.
→ More replies8
u/dubschloss 12d ago
Piercings nowadays are primarily implant certified titanium or steel, which are hypoallergenic. Any reputable shop wouldn't be caught dead piercing people with sterling silver or stainless steel. Sterling silver is a terrible choice for piercings because it typically has nickel or copper in it, which a large portion of people have sensitivities or allergies to. Stainless steel has about 8-10% nickel content.

But if you can BUY certain expensive things it means you have ACCESS to a lot of money.
Acting a certain way == making a lot
Buying certain things = access to a lot of money.

u/themancabbage 12d ago
Maybe, but iirc some of the more extreme body mods I’ve seen were on individuals working very low, entry level types of jobs, and often had massive debt from taking out personal loans to fund their obsession. I might be out of line to say so, but anyone who modifies their body so heavily like this is probably not a mentally or emotionally functional enough person to maintain something like a career, employment or self made.

I was on vacation when I was 5 y/o. Lady working the gift shop had 3 eyebrow piercings and her nose piercing ripped out the night before in a fight (presumedly). That’s enough to make you only pierce your ears and places people can’t see.
The amount of times I caught my piercings on things, I can’t imagine having one on my face catch on something.

I was in the independent pro-wrestling scene here and I took a knee to the nose from a moonsault when I was catching the guy. His kneepad caught one of my nose rings, destroyed the ring and tore a nice little hole in my nose. Nothing major at least but lots of blood, got me a few extra bucks for bleeding. So I got the 2 scars from the rings and a nice line below the 3rd hole.

Here I see an individual. Which hey, everyone has things that make them unique. But this is so out there it begs the question are they mentally healthy, and further I’d need a LOT of convincing that this person will be able to conform to being a part of the family. I don’t know how good of a relationship I have with my parents relative to you, but I know I’d want them in my children’s life. I know they’d be good to them. Not gonna lie, I scrolled a ways down to find a comment this reasonable. Would have thought not judging, based off appearances, was a low bar. Plus even if he did have mental health issues, maybe she does too, people with mental health issues deserve love if they're not assholes.

Exactly. 20-some years ago, I was an adolescent punk rock kid, and so were my friends. We looked like scoundrels, but we were the ones concerned with explicit consent, fair treatment, etc. Things typically got murkier with the clean-cut kids. That’s not a hard and fast rule, obviously, but it just goes to show that different doesn’t equal dangerous.

If the gauges I used to have are any indication that dudes face probably smells like old cheese.

All I can imagine when I look at this picture is the smell. And how impossible it must be to kiss well.

Ey if he treats my daughter with respect, is nice to her, and she loves him then🤷🏾♂️ spent too much time as a black man being looked at like I’m something wrong cause of my skin, I can’t do that to someone else

I hear you brother. However we didn't choose to be black. This guy chose to look like this. Huge difference But I agree with the rest of your comment. Respect for keeping an open mind.

I mean yes he did make this choice, but that’s the point about my daughter then. She made the choice to be with him and if he respects her and loves her then I mean 🤷🏾♂️judging him based off the image he portrays wouldn’t be right

I wouldn’t care as long as he was financially taking care of himself and able to contribute to their lives. Seems like oftentimes people that have so many modifications are not able to find and keep jobs.

Uh, I'm guessing " realize that being a parent doesn't actually give me any say in my daughter's love life" isn't the right answer?

Yeah, so. I'm not gonna pretend. I wouldn't approve. Period. The internet can shame me all they want, but this dude would not be invited post the first meeting. I would have a long conversation with my child to understand what specifically is the attraction so I can understand.
But initial meet? Hell no.

I'm with you on this. I've seen enough story and examples to know that behind that face can be a good, even great person. But that's only enough to supress my urge to get ze flammenwerfer.
I will sit down and talk to my daughter, to see if she's alright, to understand better. BUT I will be watching.

Implying you’d at least be open minded to hearing from your daughter and giving said dude a chance? If that’s the case I can’t say that’s horrible. Gut reactions can be brutal. Sometimes people need a chance to adjust.

She can do what she wants because the photo looks like an adult but I would be skeptical because what time of person decides to look like that? But I don’t have kids and I have vasectomy.

I’d hope he has a job in the body modification industry which is very lucrative. And if so, great. But if he’s just a carnival rat with no car, no job, no prospects, and no plan, I’m locking up the silver and China.
