It’d divert traffic. You can metro to the gondola. It’d be a traffic saver. Then you can get rid of a traffic lane on M and make it for pedestrians.

This is likely going to be a tourist trap and not an actually useful transportation option. A much better option would be a pair of bus lanes. Unfortunately that's politically difficult due to how much drivers bitch if a single lane is taken from them.

You can metro to one side of the gondola, and then be slowly transported to the other side, and be dropped off in a dead zone.
Or you can just ride the bus for $1. Or walk for free.
Walking is faster during rush.
Also if you think the gondola will divert enough traffic that they can take M street down to 2 lanes, I have some bad news.

Or a cold windy day. That bridge can get rough all year around
