40+ missies fired into the ocean this year, only one with enough sense and foresight to fight back against Mr. Nimbus.

u/MediocreSkyscraper Oct 28 '22
Absolutely futile. He's Mr. Nimbus, he controls the police
177
77
u/plataeng Oct 28 '22
that's why Kim is the only one who attacks. Nimbus can't control the police under his dictatorship.

Then I feel his reputation as an ice cold dick killer is perhaps just ever so slightly...overstated.

Did you get into the whole mythos they built about it online?
13
u/Dirtytusk Oct 28 '22
Oh man, GOOOOD times. I was in high school when it came out, and I remember afterwards finding out that all the characters in the movie had MySpace accounts that were created like a year or two before the movie, with random anecdotes and things that… may have been hints? May have been nothing? WHAT ABOUT THIS SLUSHIE COMPANY (or whatever it was)?! It was all so fun… reminded me of the notpr0n days.
5
u/IX_LivesLost Oct 28 '22
Seeing as when it came out in 2008 I was a few months away from turning 6, no, not at the time
Only started looking deeper into it around the time 10 Cloverfield Lane was shown off, then some more when Paradox came out in 2018. Apparently they’re making a more direct sequel to the first movie though, so that’s cool lmao

Iam more of a Godzilla guy.
Godzilla is angry and wants to emerge from the deep seas and N Korea holds it down there.

Let's start one of those ridiculous godzilla vs cthulhu debates.
I'll start. Godzilla is just some stupid lizard that was bitten by a radioactive spider. How can you weeaboos even imagine him winning vs an immortal great old one?

I suspect these missile tests are messages to Xi. Xi has said he needs to test his military. I doubt he wants to test it against the US. He has said as much.
35
u/rotten_lungs Oct 28 '22
Yep that would make sense, kim knows he has no chance against the US, like there's no way his missiles would reach mainland before being blown up into pieces, Beijing on the other hand is right next to them. Its just him saying "I can pull the dead man's switch if you dare to touch me" while screaming US bad at the top of his lungs to his people

This has nothing to do with threatening china and suggesting it does is very reddit. They lob a missile into the ocean every once in a while to get the us and Japan on a negotiation table for foreign aid so they don’t have half their country starve to death. They threaten to hit Japan and accompanying us bases which is basically the only reason this works
39
u/Biffmcgee Oct 28 '22
They should just pick up the phone. Humans are fucking ridiculous.

u/TB1971 Oct 29 '22

So, like, what if we set up a missle defense system in South Korea and Japan like what is in Israel, and then just said no?
Edit: really want to know, I'm not exactly knowledgeable in modern missle defense systems.
10
u/EskimoeJoeYeeHaw Oct 28 '22
Both Japan and South Korea already have missile defense systems. Both home grown domestic ones as well as US ones. The one you're referring to in Israel is probably the iron dome which is meant more for smaller munitions like rockets and artillery. But the defense systems SK and Japan have are purposed for ballistic missiles.
22
u/TheGrayBox Oct 28 '22
The Israeli missile defense system you’re referencing is for small and primitive surface-to-air missiles used by Hamas. ICBM’s are entirely different. It’s like comparing an RC car to a rocket ship.
But yes we absolutely do have a complex system of ballistic missile detection satellites and interception capabilities, both naval and land based. ICBM’s are complex though and generally use chaffe, so the intercept systems have to be extremely sophisticated and backed by super-computers calculating trajectory and finding the correct target within minutes. Realistically we could intercept NK missiles before they reached Hawaii or the US mainland, but there may not be enough time to intercept one over Japan. North Korea has no reason to use ICBM’s on South Korea, Seoul is literally 30 miles/50 km to the DMZ and only ~120 miles/193 km to Pyongyang. Literally any increase in hostilities results in Seoul being totally decimated by conventional artillery even with iron dome equivalents, even if the whole of the North Korean population is dead within the hour from nuclear annihilation. No one can prevent it. It’s why war in Korea simply cannot happen, there is no winning scenario.
Edit: you might find this infographic video interesting https://youtu.be/3E17wr77ffM
→ More replies3
u/Goliath1218 Oct 28 '22
Hmm, interesting. I figured north Korean ICBMs weren't nearly up to snuff and could be targeted decently by our defenses. Good post!
With that being said, wouldn't war with Japan essentially be the same was war with South Korea? It would essentially be the same no-winning scenario, so why not just call the bluff for what it is?
6
u/Wowimatard Oct 28 '22
Honestly i think NK can survive a nuke far better than any other country.
They have tunnels all over the country which is designed to survive blasts and war. Literally all over the country.

u/camM651 Oct 28 '22
You know those aren’t 100% effective I think 90% or something on the high end. That is not worth risking civilian lives for
3
u/kenpublius Oct 28 '22
Well North Koreans have been starving.
https://www.rfa.org/english/news/korea/rail_trade-09272022164556.html/ampRFA
And China is who feeds them. Furthermore China knows any war between the north and south will instantly cause a wave of Northern refugees that they don’t want. They will be forced to occupy anyway. The real question is….would the US do anything at all if China did invade North Korea. I suspect not. Depending on the long term strategy you prefer answers whether that is the correct action. I think US should be focused on the Americas and let China, India and Russia work out the face of Asia. But if you want to stay involved you attack when China thinks they have conquered NK.

Not threatening, it'd say "reminding" is more accurate, yes this way they get Japan and US to the negotiating table, but China is very anti war when it comes to Ukraine, guess who on the other hand has been playing buddies with pootin
2
u/dacjames Oct 28 '22
China is definitely not anti-war. The 20th congress of the CCP just completed and their messaging shifted substantially toward emphasizing security. The promoted hawkish figures in their military. Most commentators believe that they're accelerating the time table for military conflict with Taiwan.
They have taken a more ambiguous position regarding Russia following the Ukraine invasion. The reason for that is that Russia is performing so poorly in said war. Aside from oil and gas, military support was supposed to be the main thing that Russia brought to the partnership. So they're backing off while it's unclear what Russia can offer China.

SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles toward the sea on Friday in its first ballistic weapons launches in two weeks, as the U.S. military warned the North that the use of nuclear weapons "Will result in the end of that regime."
Since late September, North Korea has launched a barrage of missiles toward the sea in what it called simulated tests of tactical nuclear weapons systems designed to attack South Korean and U.S. targets.

My big question is...
What's Russia's stance on this? Russia is currently America's biggest enemy, if NK launches a nuke, detonates a nuke, will that be condoned by Russia, especially if the US start attacking NK?
I truly believe NK will detonate something, regardless of where.
7
u/m4lmaster Oct 28 '22
theyve already destroyed one of their own cities by accident, the most theyre probably doing is launching duds and telling their people that theyre protecting them from the evil western world.
2
u/igankcheetos Oct 28 '22 edited Oct 30 '22
The U.S. does not have to attack NK. If NK launches a nuke, UN security policies go into effect. NK will have to deal with more than just the U.S. So Kim will just threaten and bluster and shake his fat little fist ineffectually while firing impotent rockets into the ocean. I wouldn't even classify Russia as the U.S.'s enemy because their Army sucks, so they could not invade the U.S. let alone a country right next door, and they can't really play their nuke card without Mutually Assured Destruction going into effect. So they are pretty neutered on all fronts. Their tech sucks, their logistics sucks, they have no air, space, or seas superiority, No carriers to project power, even their first strike capabilities are questionable after seeing the obvious maintenance shortcomings of their military equipment on the battlefield including the Moskova, their "flagship" turned unmanned submarine: https://www.reddit.com/r/navy/comments/uk4iuw/alleged_leaked_moskva_readiness_report_dated_two/

You're overestimating the current relationship between NK and China.
You're underestimating why North Korea exists - solely to act as a buffer against a US-allied democracy.
This is why China fought with North Korea in the Korean war.
This is why China continues to support and prop up North Korea.
This is why China will never condemn North Korea, and always veto a UN resolution against North Korea (and blame everyone else, or just tell everyone to 'keep calm').
China feels threatened by neighbouring democracies. Democracy is the antithesis of CCP's existence, so it must be minimised. Thus, good bye Hong Kong's democracy, why Taiwan must be absorbed, and why North Korea must exist as a buffer state against South Korea / the US / Japan.
