(instead of relying on archaic text commands)

Back in my day, we didn't just have to use text commands to configure our MMOs. We couldn't even cast a simple spell without typing the full name of it into our chat bar! Did you want a group heal? Oh whoops, too slow! Type faster, noob. And we only had 36 possible hotkey(not hotbar, hotkey - you had to memorize that shit!) slots, which had to hold not only all the spell commands that we wanted to quickly cast but also all of our totally-necessary quotes from friends that we liked to fire off in guild chat! You kids these days have it easy!

One of them told me that if you stay a little too long, you get too comfortable with your job and just settle for the rest of your life.

Think for a moment about how fucked up this is to say. You have to keep moving, because if you don't you might be too comfortable. Too comfortable. How fucked up is that, where we value being in a state of constant stress(it may not be your experience, but for many of us including myself starting a new job or changing positions is non-stop insomnia, stress and anxiety for 6 months or more as we struggle to adapt to new procedures/office politics and wait out the probation period) over being able to relax and be comfortable in our lives? It may be true, but it's fucked up, and we should recognize that rather than presenting it as a good thing to aspire to.

It has some situational racist connotations in the real world, for example saying that you can't tell japanese, korean and chinese people apart. Not necessarily that they all look the same to you(though that is a hella racist thing that shares a lot of the same keywords, so be careful there), but you couldn't look at someone and guess their ethnic ancestry. I've been told by asian people that this is a thing you can do if you have the immersion and knowledge for it. I admit that I don't. Despite living in an area of the US with heavy asian immigration(primarily korean and vietnamese), I don't have the type of exposure necessary because people don't walk around with their ancestry labeled on their shirts, you know? If they did, I would have no excuse. I don't think it's necessarily racist to admit my ignorance in this area given the type of exposure I have had, but it would be if I said it with the context of "...and nobody else can either!" or "...so it doesn't matter!" for example.

You're describing an adult student making it through college with a sufficient GPA. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about students who struggle to make the network, not just attending an office hour here or there as needed but building relationships by being an office hour regular. By being able to drop everything and attend that exhibition the professor recommended. By attending the department party to bump shoulders with the otherwise-unreachable guy who somehow manages to know everyone who matters in the local market. Most returning adult students need this less because they already have a network in place through their professional career.

What I'm talking about is somebody who's trying to put themselves through college while working multiple part-time jobs or one full-time no-mobility job. That person, who is the very dream of the lower economic classes being told to go to college and pull yourself out of poverty, is who's going to be passed over in favor of students who have the economic advantage, even if they manage a good GPA. I'm not saying that a returning adult student can't get screwed over here, especially if they're re-entering the workforce after raising children for example, but it's much less likely than someone who's trying to break into the workforce for the very first time.

I was thinking of Tibia. I played Runescape as well, but only melee and magic.

Your positionals now also have positional requirements.

Or worse: all positionals have been removed. Honestly, given how many players complain about them(WHY? There are 16 other jobs you could play! Three of them are melee dps! Go play one of those other options if you hate positionals so much, instead of demanding the one job that's made of them change to suit your tastes!) I half expect it one of these days.

I used to play an old mmo where this was a thing. If you were fighting ranged, you had to go manually pick up your used ammo from where it landed on the ground. The game capped inventory based on weight rather than slots, so you might only bring 10 spears with you, which meant you'd have to pick up the used ones unless you wanted your hunting trip to be very short.

You didn’t network at all through college or apply to any internship or college to company based programs? I mean a major part of college is networking though.

You've (probably accidentally) landed on a very important point that a lot of people don't realize, which is that for people like /u/olav_reign who are from an economic class where they had to work through college, this expectation to put in additional time to network essentially places the jobs they were hoping to get out of reach. That internship pays shit, if it even pays at all. Somebody who's dipping in for class then running back out for their job/to go home isn't going to be sticking around to network in office hours, study sessions, and department activities. That advantage goes to students who can afford to be devoted 100% to their schooling with no pesky distractions, such as having to work a job rather than leaning entirely on mom and dad until graduation.

actually at that I’d hate to have to sort through a pile of 100 resumes lol

That's why everywhere only does online now, so they can 1) filter out people who don't know computers enough to apply and 2) run it through an automated filter to cut that pile of 100 resumes down to 20 for manual review. The person you replied to is either trolling, high, or talking out their ass. The only way you're getting a job in 2021 without going through an online portal is if you're benefiting from some form of nepotism.

Maybe she just doesn't like him, lol. It happens. I'd say peak Alphi annoyance is during the 2.x questlines, and after that he gets much more tolerable. I still wouldn't hang out with him(though how much of that is him specifically and how much of that is his age), but we could at least have a civil conversation without me being all "lol get a load of this kid!"

Gets worse? How far through the story is your friend? The general consensus is that he gets better as you move through Heavensward, dropping the worst of the behaviors I described(though he still has some /r/iamverysmart vibes from time to time).

Do you know about Project Gutenberg? It collects works that are out of copyright(which varies by country, I don't think this particular book will run afoul of any country though as it's from the 1800s) and publishes them in a variety of formats for free download/viewing. For Huckleberry Finn, this chapter has Jim in it, right near the start.

There's three reasons that sell it for me. First, he spends a lot of time explaining things, often in a long-winded manner. Second(related, but distinct), he's got an "actually..." streak a mile wide, usually followed by one of the aforementioned explanations. And last but not least, in the past he's been known for thinking he knows a lot more than he actually does, and acting on that false confidence with disastrous results.

Kid's a redditor through and through. Someone drop him off a bridge, please.

Did you read what you're replying to? They have bricks passed down through the family for 35 years. Newer purchases would be to supplement that set, to replace stuff that got lost or broken over the years, or to add something new to the pot(like getting a themed fantasy or sci-fi set for the special bricks and minifigures). If you were going to start up a collection from scratch this year, yeah, it makes sense to buy cheap* and go through the hassle of cleaning. But having to deal with all that bother every so often on small quantities of lego can be more trouble than its worth. Time-cost is real!

* Shipping is a bitch and a half though, especially overseas(odds are the cheap sellers would not be in norway) and with something that would be as bulky as a huge container of legos. Stop and consider that it might cost as much, if not more, in shipping than what the actual purchase price is, making the cheap buy not as appealing anymore.

My childhood best friend's mother was in a bed in the living room when she was diagnosed terminal(cancer) and went home to wait. I suspect it was because she wanted to be more around the family and couldn't handle the stairs(they had a townhome, so the basement, entry, main floor, and bedrooms were each their own level). I don't know that she died there, but it's where she was every time I was over for those last few months.

Yeah I'm reading down this thread of people saying to send them to the hospital, call the cops on them, etc...I don't really think there's a good option here if you can't get them into the hands of their friends or back to their own home.

Call an ambulance? This is safe for them, but the bill they receive could ruin their life, and if they're that drunk they're not in a position to refuse the treatment. It's not exactly a kindness, not unless you believe their life is in danger. I am also from the US, so again, skewed perspective here.

Call the cops? This is situational. It won't be pleasant for them(in many areas they could face fines, even if their only crime was being intoxicated in public, and some jails will bill you for the cell as well), and it may not be safe for them. A white woman would be safe I'm sure, but I would not contact the cops if it was a PoC or a trans woman, because that is not necessarily safe. Of course, if they're being violent that's a different story, but I'm assuming sloppy drunk rather than combative drunk.

Take them to your place? That's definitely creepy, but they're safe and won't face penalties. I don't know. There's no good option here. There's a few that legally cover your ass, but morally? Honestly, I think the safest(for them) and least weird thing would have been to keep the person clothed and leave them in your living room. No matter what, it's going to be awkward and kind of creepy, but that would minimize most of the serious risks.

This can be a double edged sword. Hussie might be fine with it, but what if someone at viz decides it infringes? As the rights-holders, they can request to be removed from archives(which iirc is what the creators decided this is?), and that would be the end of the project. Whenever you're trying to operate in the copyright gray area(whether it's abandonware, out of print books, a website no longer being maintained, etc), being acknowledged publicly like this is almost always a bad thing. I hope the endorsement doesn't pick up much attention, because that could make viz think they have to do something about it, you know? I've seen this shit go down before.

Trans rights are feminism. Why do you think the people in power are so batshit afraid of the recognition of trans people? If you can move around the hierarchy, or even step outside of it entirely, then it's revealed for the fake sham that it is. I wish more people would see this, instead of falling into TERF traps and fighting with each other.

"______ writing a check that ______ can't cash" is a pop culture reference that essentially means the first thing is overextending the second thing(it's an old metaphor, sorry gen z). Damned if I know what it's originally from, but I've seen that fill-in-the-blank format pop up in too many places for it not to be a reference to something else. With knowledge of the format it's referencing, it makes sense: the pain on display is promising a satisfying conclusion that the video doesn't deliver on, no matter how many times you watch it(the "looping conclusion" might reference something else, I didn't watch the progress video so that part's a stab in the dark).

Last year when the stores were running out of toilet paper I said to my wife, "what if its food next? It'd be nice to have chickens like we always talked about."

It was food, at least where I lived. I was born in the US in 1990, and that was the first time I witnessed sustained empty shelves, up and down entire aisles(so not just something like canned soup getting to be thin pickings before a snowstorm). A shipment would come in and it would be snatched up within the day. I had a group chat going with everyone in my household where we put wishlist items, and we'd buy for each other if we saw something on the shelves, sometimes going back every day to check if it was an important thing we were missing(like a bread substance). This happened immediately after the states started locking down, and lasted for a few weeks, not nearly as long as the toilet paper. Apparently, you had to rush the store in the morning crowds if you wanted a chance at getting what you wanted, and since masking wasn't really a thing yet that's nothing any of us wanted to do(someone braved it once, and reported back that it was a terrible idea and never again).

Keep in mind that what gets edited together into the final product is the best of the best. If his mark sees through it, or doesn't react in an entertaining way, it's not going to make the film.

It's fine for melee dps to do it(unless you're in a fight where positioning has to be exact, for whatever reason), just not the tank. You're right that it's the fastest way to identify whether an AoE circle is on you or on the character you're standing right next to!
