Calling BS on this..
I was paying rent selling VCRs in the 80s. I was single living in a basement apartment. Did it for 10 years among older grizzled guys. The only one of us who could afford the lifestyle OP describes were the store owners, and people who had a second income source. Yeah houses were cheaper but mortgage rates were 3x higher than now ( a little under 12(!)%). I can speak so specifically bcz I had discussions about how grown up cover that nut.
Yeah finances are a problem but they've always been for working classes.
