Robofont and Glyphs are the main ones, there is also FontLab but it‘s ridden with bugs and inconsistencies (at least that’s what I heard from professionals). Robofont is the best to me but some prefer Glyphs because it’s a bit more user friendly and more accessible in terms of price.

If you’re taking a class and they recommend Robofont my guess is the teacher is more proficient in Robofont. So maybe it would be best. Both Robofont and Glyphs have a month free trial so you should definitely take advantage of that.
