Speaking from the public accounting side working at a small firm big 4 and mid tier. There is a ton to be happy with. Less than 5 years into my career I have doubled my salary from 50 to over 100k, I have enjoyed learning all the things that come with public accounting and seeing the various industries. The benefits are great which hard to match with other career paths of 35 days off a year with holidays, numerous free trainings, a ton of different paths and a with having a CPA the job security is very comforting. As you move up the flexibility on when you have to work and where is amazing. The great thing about accounting is there is a ton of room to grow and ton of different paths with great upward mobility. Can do the partner path in PA there is possibility to make 700k+ or leave for industry don’t get me wrong this is a ton of work and can be stressful. At any point can leave to a government job working 30 hours a week making a good salary. People have went into starting their own company’s, left for prominent roles in industry. Some of the downsides are I didn’t really think of coming out of college is the learning curve. It take a ton of work and hours to learn the role, and to be good at it. There is so much to learn and a lot vary complex in the world of accounting. To learn the auditing standards keep up on the latest accounting standards some of that learning process can be overwhelming and difficult at times but for many it is worth it. Some of the things didn’t really consider going out of college were what industry I wanted to work in and how much that would impact my interest. This job has helped me build great relationships, learn a ton, buy a house right out of college and build a family. Overall, I’m pretty satisfied with my choice to pursue accounting.
