I grew up with extreme childhood abuse and I can tell you with certainty that Kate laughed as a defense mechanism. She was frightened by Mary’s hostility and “laughing it off” was her way of avoiding additional abuse.
Edited to add: That poor woman deserved to have someone stick up for her. Maybe your MIL is one of the few people to ever do that.

The things Mary said to Kate are absolutely unforgivable, no wonder Kate cut contact. I would never let someone who spoke to me that way within a mile of my child. Good for you, Kate.

I mostly agree with you here. I don’t think it’s right to shame anyone for their budget or tastes. Is this my style? Absolutely not. Is this harming anyone? Not at all except for one thing in this picture: that wedding cake topper.
Like photos of dads with shotguns, grooms wearing “game over” or “last night as a free man” shirts, and “it’s too late to run” ring bearer signs, that cake topper perpetuates a stigma that men are forced into marriages and women are “crazy” and the only one who wants one. It’s sexist, demeaning, and offensive. Maybe not to this couple, but to a lot of other people out there.
This sub can be misguided at times in terms of what is and isn’t shameful. My golden rule of weddings: bride & groom gets to do/wear/say/decorate with whatever they want so long as the guests are not uncomfortable (whether that be physically or socially). Don’t shame people for their budget or decorations if it doesn’t harm you. It literally affects you in no way, and I see nothing wrong with someone wanting to wear a cowboy hat and have a red & blue cake. But that cake topper makes a looooot of people uncomfortable and perpetuates a harmful misogynistic stereotype.

I dunno, maybe people with disregard for public safety shouldn’t be in charge of public safety?

They won’t remember what exactly the ate. They may not even remember if they liked it. But they will remember if they’re hungry! It’s better to have plenty of average food instead of a little bit of fancy food.

If I was the bride in this story and I found out someone not only remembered my height, weight, and “cuteness,” but also felt the need to share those details with strangers, I would be freaked out. None of that is relevant to the story. FMIL’s skin tone & her hair color doesn’t matter in any way, and honestly it sounds creepy af.

I dunno, I have several family members who are over-the-top and let me tell you — Crazy doesn’t know shape.

Why are there such detailed descriptions for the women’s physical appearance? The bride’s height and weight doesn’t factor into the story at all…

UX/UI Designer here. iOS guidelines recommends 44x44pt area for touch targets. It appears there is a 30pt distance between the video controller and the home indicator. Your recommendation of moving it up 10-20px is spot on.

Hey there Reddit. Not sure if you’re still reading/replying to these comments but I’d really like to offer my two cents to this experience as a senior UX designer (and redditor every day since 2015 on my other account)
First of all, I understand the need to place advertisements. That’s how you guys get paid to do the work you do, and that’s what keeps this platform up and running. We run ads on the app I work for. Video ads are a great opportunity to monetize, and I understand the need for a uniform player so you can iterate and ship quickly.
Thank you for fixing the comments issue. That was my biggest complaint. But there are a few more things I think are worth addressing in your next iterations. I may be speaking into the void, but I want to offer these user stories with the best of intentions.
- As a user, I expect comments that live in a bottom sheet to be expanded when I swipe up. Because it lives in a bottom sheet. I understand that some new users may expect the TikTok style of navigation, but it feels unnatural to me as a legacy user.
- As a user, I expect to navigate video posts the same way I navigate non-video posts. That means left and right should take me to the next posts.
- As a user who is interested in a wide variety of content across Reddit, I want to be able to navigate across all types of posts, not just video only. I can see where this request could disrupt monetization efforts, but I thought it’d be worth mentioning
- As a user with vision impairments, I find the video UI difficult to see, especially animated awards, and especially when the UI is displayed in front of bright videos.
- Finally, my biggest current gripe with this experience: As a user, I want to view discussions. Keeping comments in a bottom drawer/modal makes it hard to follow a lengthy discussion with lots of replies. Perhaps making comments or padding smaller could help, but I feel like it’s much more effort to follow threads than it used to be, and I rarely use the next comment widget. I wish I could give you a concrete reason why, but I just don’t have one.
If you read through this, thank you so much. I won’t pretend to know your current OKRs or goals, but it means a lot to me as a user to know we’re being heard.

“What Sarah Said” by Death Cab for Cutie

Death Cab for Cutie.
Ben Gibbard is the most talented lyricist I’ve ever heard. “What Sarah Said” hits me in the gut every. time. I used a Postal Service lyric as my high school yearbook quote.
Like many bands, their early stuff had a unique sound but every song was distinctly different. I feel like it’s hard to find that nowadays — I hear an awesome single by a modern band, then listen to the rest of the album and it all turns out to be the same song.

Love all the commenters here trying to pin this as an iOS issue. It’s not hard to move the control bar up 16px to avoid this problem (there are literally guidelines written for this).
That being said, this is just one of many ux problems with this video player. It genuinely seems like they aren’t bothering with user feedback or iterations. Must be a corporate decision.
