I served in the SADF in northern Namibia where we had Bushmen and Ovambo trackers operating with our battalion along the Angola border. Because many aspects of western civilization were more foreign to them, they had the ability to pick up after shave odors and spot cigarette butts from a distance. To us those things were ingrained as normal, but to many of them a piece of a candybar wrapper on the ground stood out. So it sometimes seemed they indeed had super powers. But it was only because many western items were more foreign to them.

We were conscripted into National Service after high school… for most, it was the great equalizer. No talking a big game… just do it like all others before you.
