We’re in the middle of our second national lockdown here. We locked down with 1 case confirmed because it wasn’t linked to anywhere. We now have 511 cases after almost 2 weeks with 34 of those in hospital. Delta is crazy contagious. On the plus side, everybody is by and large supportive. The latest protest that people tried to organise in our largest city had 1 person turn up. Hopefully we can keep our deaths down to the 5.2 per million it’s gotten to so far.

All clothing sizes are bullshit. Men's clothing has exactly the same issue (Different actual waist widths, different thigh widths, different lengths for the same size), and that's not counting that there are 4! count 'em, 4 different sizes on the tag: US, UK, EU & CM. I don't even know where CM is.
Since you're talking women's clothing, the issue that boils my blood on behalf of my daughter is f***ing pockets! She just wants 4 actual functioning pockets in her pants.

"Hey this looks interesting"... click on Steam link.. "Oooh yeah I should... ".. see I've already wishlisted it.. "Ah good".
PS: I don't do online multi-player, so I'm always looking for good single player RTS games because so many game devs farm out their AI by making it mainly multi-player.
You'd think with the success of the Expanse there'd be more of these.

I don't give a toss if they're jealous or not. Just trying to explain the Oxford University study that someone else posted. It's severity over time with a numerical score assigned to severity so you can average it, but whatever.

Fair enough.. I hope you find yourself in a better place one day soon.

I wasn't talking about changing your mind. Hell, who's mind has ever been changed by talking to some random person on the internet? But it can be interesting to meet people with different experiences and map out where we differ.
I wish you'd stop with the communist thing.. it's weird. As if you're trying to insult me by calling me a Mormon when I'm an atheist. It's not an insult, it's just a weird verbal tick you've developed.
I can understand being pissed about the world. I get pretty pissed off at some of the things happening. Particularly the whole climate thing.
Another random point which might provide some context to our discussion: NZ as a whole is a lot more left wing than the US. Our right wing party would be right at home in your Democrats. Our gibbering-idiot so-far-right-almost-noone-votes-for-them fringe probably would be still be a bit too left to fit in with your Republicans. Bernie Sanders would be center-left here. Sort of like your Blue Dog Democrats.
So that's the range of political leanings you'll see in NZ. Aussie is a bit more right-wing. Their right fringe probably would be mainstream Republicans.

I thought I had, but maybe I wasn't clear enough in what I meant with point 5.
Are you going to address any of the other points or are you just going to downvote everything that challenges you and ragequit?

COMMENT 17d ago

You don't think that telling me to shut up because I don't agree with you is ironic?
Also, pretty much every western style democracy gives it's citizens the right to criticise its laws.

1a) Weaponising people's deaths? Do you feel like you've been hurt by this discussion?
1b) As a matter of fact, neither Australia nor NZ have had the opportunity to be vaccinated yet. Some other countries outbid us for vaccines and so we're still only now getting sufficient supplies. NZ is at about 30% vaccinated. Aussie is a little bit more.
1c) Communism is about the capital, the means of production, being owned equally by a collective of people instead of by individuals. Imagine if there was a law that said all Amazon shares could only be owned by the people who worked at Amazon and those shares must be distributed equally so that the packer on the warehouse floor had the same number of shares as Jeff Bezos. That's communism. Not getting into whether it's good or bad, but that's what it is.
2) So you're an absolutist... you must have the freedom to destroy people's lives with words or else you're being oppressed. I really don't know what to tell you. I disagree obviously, and so do the majority of people on the planet. But you do you.
3) I don't have any authoritarian friends, and the US owns the internet in so many ways. One of the US government's best inventions. Given the 800 military bases in over 70 countries, I'd say it owns a fair chunk of the world too.
4) Man, I don't know you. I'm not afraid of you. I'm just talking to you about something we obviously have very different perspectives on, but that doesn't worry me or threaten me. The world would be very boring if we all agreed on everything.
5) Funny thing... your 1st amendment gives me the right to say that your laws and attitudes suck ass. That's irony.

COMMENT 17d ago

Sigh... I'm saying over time, on average they are less severe. Lockdown very hard for a short period of time until the virus is gone. Then loosen up everywhere except on people coming into the country.
2 months much more severe than US, 10 months of no restrictions at all while the US still has restrictions. Is that clear enough?

COMMENT 17d ago

No. Charging people for speech is NOT par for the course across Europe. Not that Australia or New Zealand are anywhere near Europe. They do have hate speech laws... you're not allowed to say that the Holocaust didn't happen in Germany for example. But that's for a reason: nobody wants more Nazis.
Nobody said everyone draws the line where the US does. I even explicitly mentioned your law about being able to shoot yourselves in massive numbers and how no other country thought that was a good idea.
As far as shooting dogs, after someone else posted about it I went and found the stories in the Aussie papers and they weren't shot for spreading a virus. They were wild dogs with no owners, shot in a redneck, middle of nowhere town on the edge of the desert because the local pound had run out of space and the councilors who gave the go-ahead for that are being investigated by the state authorities and face criminal charges.
Your CDC and state officials have the power to isolate and quarantine people just the same as health and government authorities here. You'd rather have 600,000 dead. We'd rather spend time at home helping keep people alive.
Being at home's not so bad, I'm on a quarter acre section with a big house. Farm across the road and a big ass lake at the bottom of the garden. Our government education department shipped devices to every kid in the country who needed them to home school. Couriers still deliver anything you can order. I only mask up to go into town for the weekly supermarket shop. Definitely not feeling very oppressed.

COMMENT 17d ago

Yes. It does the same to the other countries. When NZ just locks down one city, the graph still shoots up. Australia has the same issue. All their cases are in 2 states. The other states don't have restrictions at all.
The US's worst restrictions ARE lower than others. Other countries like NZ have had much higher levels of restrictions, albeit for much shorter times. The restrictions in Victoria and NSW now are higher than the worst restrictions any US state has ever imposed. This is why the US death rate is a thousand times worse than Australia and New Zealand per head of population.

COMMENT 17d ago

Thanks, but I prefer to check my own sources a bit closer to home.
So, from what I can tell there were 5 dogs who were all running wild in the area which is a great big bunch of savannah/desert, no owners, chips or records. 1 of them had a litter of 10 puppies.
The local council of "Middle of nowhere" Bourke decided waiting till a rehoming outfit could pick them up was too hard and they needed the space, so they shot the dogs. Sounds about right for a bunch of redneck Outback farmers.
They have now been condemned by pretty much everyone and are being investigated by the state agency and the RSPCA. Criminal charges are possible.
So yeah.. rednecks were dumb, will probably get a criminal record and be fined and everybody thinks they're scum. Did I miss anything?

COMMENT 17d ago

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Australia has a constitution.. it has a section on "freedom of expression" which their courts have held is the same thing as what you're talking about. Political speech is protected.
You won't go to jail just for protesting any more than you do in the US. If you yell "Fire" in a crowd, you'll go to jail just like you do in the US.
Freedom of speech is actually part of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which has been adopted by the UN General Assembly and yes, ratified in Aus and NZ.
This is why you get a roll of the eyes whenever Americans talk about their freedoms.. you're not uniquely free. The few times you did define some new freedom you thought people should have, most other countries in the world went "Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. We'll do that too". Other times like the freedom to own guns and shoot yourselves in massive numbers, other countries looked at it and went "Nah...."
Also, once again... saying Australia is communist makes you sound like a fool. Like someone in the US saying "Oprah Winfrey is a communist!". Everyone else is looking at you thinking "WTF kinda drugs are you on because you're clearly on a different planet to the rest of us."

NZ is 268,000 km2 vs the UK at 242,000 km2, so not that different.. just imagine the UK with 5 million people instead of 66 million with London having 1.8 million instead of 6 million. Auckland is 1,000 km2 and London is 1,500 km2.
Yes, there's a lot less international travel than the UK of course, but we do get lots of flights stopping off through from the Americas to Asia and vice versa as well as being one of the main two gateways to the Pacific Islands.

You realise that they've been filming the Avatar movies and the LotR TV show here over the last couple of years right? People like those actors have been coming and going. Gabe Newell has been here. Anyone coming in goes into a 2 week stay in a 4 star hotel while they get tested to make sure they don't bring COVID in. If you're a citizen returning home after living overseas, it's free. Everyone else pays. You're free to leave the country anytime.

Please tell me your theory about why there were way fewer cases in NZ. Because you're right. There were:
Deaths Per 1M
NZ: 5.2
US: 1,893.8
UK: 1,964.1

There was a 12k crowd concert in September 2020 in my city. It was actually really good for our local musicians because there were so few overseas acts coming in and everyone was hungry for big events.

We have a Bill of Rights. So far it seems we've done a good enough job writing it that we haven't had to amend it yet.
Also,
a) you just can't burn a city to the ground, and no one has in the US.
b) if you're trying to tell me that the BLM protests did not have any police "fighting back", then you weren't paying attention.
