Leave Reddit.

If you're serious about this, leave the website. Forever. I'll do it. I am doing it. I've had this account for 11 years as of next week, but I'm done. This is my last comment. I don't want to leave. This is my home on the internet, I don't participate in any other social media sites outside of Reddit (and I won't after I leave it, either), but I'm done with it. It is every bit as harmful as Facebook, and I left that shit years ago despite having real-life friends and family on it. I have to leave Reddit now, too, and for the same fucking reasons.

Social media is harmful to human progress. I don't know if it's inherent to the concept, but in practice every single social media site - now without exception - has been detrimental to actual human society in tangible, demonstrable ways. I can't continue to contribute to that by providing my presence here. This is my last comment. I'm sad, I'm fucking pissed, but I can't do this anymore. You should leave too. And you should not go anywhere else. You should get off the internet in general. That's my goal, and I hope it'll be yours.

So long. Best of luck. Fuck you.

How did they get that way? How does an entire culture get to that point? You can't solve this problem with violence. We fucking tried that. So what else is there other than exposing these beliefs as the ignorant frauds they are?

The Qur'an is not a reliable source of information. This is not a "stupid ass" comment. It's simply a fact, and I stated it in the form of a sarcastic question. What's unclear about this?

And we all know that faith has never ever led anyone astray, so I think we're in good hands here. I feel great about this.

Nah, we should just sit by and not criticize them for holding unjustified and dangerous beliefs instead, because it's clearly all going so well.

Somebody beat me, soundly, in a debate about my fundamentalist beliefs when I was younger, and it started the process that led to me dropping them altogether and adopting only those I could support with evidence and reason instead, and I'm a better person for it. I'm grateful that that person didn't hold back out of the fear of offending me. I was offended, but I still needed to hear it. What's your suggestion? When, exactly, should we promote the transition to an evidence-based worldview? When would be a more appropriate time to advocate for a reality-based belief system? Because I'll just reschedule my snarky comments for then.

Oh, God, it's all real! Oh, it hurts! Oh, I shouldn't have doubted it! I shouldn't have let you make me doubt it! Aah! I blame you, I blame you!

Ah, and the Qur'an has been shown to be historically reliable based on what empirical evidence, exactly?

COMMENT 18d ago

And they base this clearly rational belief on what empirical evidence, exactly?

...which is where the humor in my sarcasm comes from, yes. "Using a phone to call someone whose name, address, and phone number you possess," is not, in fact, spy shit, but I thought it would be humorous to pretend like it was.

COMMENT 18d ago

That's like some spy shit right there.

That's some big-ass small government.

COMMENT 18d ago

This is exactly how we got to where the world is today.

COMMENT 18d ago

I spend too much time on Reddit, yes.

Reddit is Facebook. Thanks for ruining everything, you fucking morons.

COMMENT 19d ago

Sure. So, you see, the thing is, anything that exists anywhere at all is a "holup" because the users here are fucking dumber than dog shit and have turned this goddamn place into another fucking Facebook feed of fake boomer bullshit that only mentally impaired people would ever, under any circumstance, ever fall for, ever, Jesus fucking Christ, these fucking people.

COMMENT 19d ago

This fucking subreddit has just become another goddamn boomer Facebook feed of fake headline screenshots. Thanks for fucking ruining everything, you unskeptical imbeciles, you fucking mushbrained mouthbreathers. Stop being so goddamn stupid.

The euphemism game is strong with this one.

I'll be happy to move on - I'm not particularly invested in this discussion - but I'm afraid I can't accept that I'm wrong before I do. I would need a more substantial source of evidence than just this conversation to change my views on this.

just give up

Solid life advice in general, really.

No, I was not wrong to stereotype. I was explaining why a certain group contains so many individuals to whom this particular stereotype applies - that is, I was explaining why this stereotype holds true.

I could go ask my wife for you why so many nurses believe in so much pseudoscience and misinformation, but her response would be even less polite than mine.

They are the source of the evidence from which my opinion is informed. I am qualified to evaluate the critical thinking skills of others, and I have had first- or secondhand experience with many members of this class, which is where I derived this generality. Of course it doesn't apply to 100% of the individuals within the class, but it does apply to the majority based on the information I have available to me. There are many others in this very same thread who offer similar opinions based on similar evidence.

And my degree in philosophy makes me an expert in critical thinking. I thought that was a self-evident implication that didn't need to be explicitly stated. Being married to a nurse gives me insight that others external to the field wouldn't have otherwise, yet it allows me to consider the field without personal bias since I'm not a part of it.

I have a degree in philosophy and I'm married to a nurse.
