I'd actually argue this isn't actually the case if you look at policy. Leftist thought centers around workers taking control. By default this means that the bulk of the population has the political power in a country and the leaders are merely the mouth piece for democracy. There are plenty of authoritarian regimes that claim to be leftist, but I'd argue they're really ruling with right wing policy while speaking from the left side of their mouths. Their left wing tendencies end with speeches and all action is to maintain that social order right wingers love so much.

You're right. The only thing the majority of republicans care about is disagreeing with democrats. They just view democrats as their enemy and not fellow Americans they disagree with on policy.
