For this league, sure. It's dead and needs cpr. For a healthy version of poe and a good league. I don't think it's as good at that point.

It would be an interesting experiment. They could directly compare the average time played between the two leagues and determine which difficulty holds player retention. Or the could use that data and balance the core mode around it for the middle ground. Actually this might be literally the only way to get the game into a state that the entire community will have to compromise a little and meet in the middle in terms of balance. Fuck. How about no more modes? Splitting up trade league players between even more league modes is a terrible idea. All it's going to do is make it harder to trade and kill the league even faster. I don't know why this didn't cross their mind with the hard mode thing.

Your last point is exactly what ggg seems to have forgotten. Being able to gear up your creative genius only creates build diversity and league longevity. The longer it takes for people to gear their characters the less likely they'll want to do it again. Unless it has a league mechanic that is just incredibly fun to play over all. This is why poe leagues abruptly die. The league mechanics are having to pull too much weight to retain the player base. If it's not a fun mechanic and you can't gear up fast it's just like nope, not going again for a lot of people.
