My friend was able to do that very thing. She took the last two months of school “off” using her PTO and with the support of her doctor. The district wasn’t happy about it, but they couldn’t legally stop her.
I hope it works out for you!

Egads! That’s disturbing indeed.

Agreed! I have to look at it, so I want my room to be pleasant. I never spend that much, but I have some nice posters and behind my desk is a bulletin with postcards of places I’ve traveled and artwork I like. It’s nice to feel comfortable in my space and that it has items that make me happy.

Yeah, I’ve always been given rooms devoid of decorations. The custodian has usually set up the desks in rows and nothing has ever been too obviously messy. But when I open the filing cabinets and desk drawers….
Old food, candy wrappers, dirty socks, boxes of overhead projector parts, pistachio shells… I’ve had it all!

Nope, CA requires unvaccinated school staff get tested a minimum of once per week and gives districts the option of more frequent testing. My district opted for twice weekly.

I think that a lot of people are under the impression that California mandated vaccines as well, but it’s just that unvaccinated school staff need to get weekly Covid testing. It’s better than nothing, for sure, but I wish we’d go as far as Washington.

Sometimes students do need to get their shit together, lol!
I worked at a small continuation school with a handful of gang-affiliated students. I had two students who were from rival gangs and they were squaring off for a fight in my room. I yelled at them to “sit the fuck down” and it worked- fight averted! I couldn’t think of anything else to say in the moment and my principal was just glad that the fight was avoided.

Is it? I think it depends on when the person will be 18. I graduated high school early and at 17, almost 18, I dated a 22 year old I met through my job. We were both in college (freshman and senior). I’ve never felt he was too old for me, though I admittedly think that’s the largest age gap I find appropriate with someone who is almost 18/a young adult.

It seemed to be an attempt to force her into a religion and way of life they supported. Pretty shitty to take away her choice, but I guess that fits with their goals and values…

To my knowledge, yes. No one said it outright, but the impression I got was that she was going to be married in the not so distant future.

I’m an American high school teacher and a few years ago I had a student who was originally from Afghanistan. After living in the US for about a decade, her parents decided to send her back to Afghanistan to live with relatives. She was despondent and the principal and I looked into legal avenues to keep her here. There were none that we could find and she moved. I hoped that the government and military would hold and she wouldn’t end up living under the Taliban. My heart aches for her and all the women this change will affect. I can’t imagine what that would be like.

Teacher pay varies a lot by district and especially by state. Some areas pay pretty well indeed, though on average teacher pay is low for the level of education and training required. In my district the top tier is 35 years of experience plus a masters degree, so it takes a long time and a lot of education to get that salary.
I am making almost $100k in part because I accepted an extra duty assignment (meaning additional work) that adds about 15% to my base salary.

I’m a teacher, too! I won’t quite make $100k this year, but I’m close. I’m in a HCOL area and my district tops out at around $130k.

San Jose Unified is also doing this. Staff must be vaccinated or undergo twice weekly testing. I think it’s great and feel much better about returning to work!

COMMENT 11d ago
That’s surprising! My district asked us to submit proof of vaccination in May and followed up again last week. School starts next week and any school staff who aren’t fully vaccinated by then must undergo weekly Covid testing. Our DO released a statement saying that 90% of us are vaccinated.

My husband and I go to Dr. Yang at Greenville Dental. We were referred to her by a friend and have been very happy with her work and approach. Her office is near Good Samaritan Hospital on the SJ/Los Gatos border.

Yeah, that ratio includes very small classes (like special education classes) that skew the numbers. In my district, high school general education classes are capped at 35 kids and we are always at/close to that number. Yet our “official” ratio is 20:1 because of some very small classes. Most kids/teachers are in a 35:1 setting.

None! Our contract stipulates that we have a 40 hour workweek, but we’re only required to be on campus for 35 hours. The “extra” 5 hours is at our discretion to work from home or on campus as we like. I personally average right around 40 hours a week.

I could also be remembering wrong! I do know that my friend was told the success depends a lot on how long it’s been since the vasectomy was done and how much scar tissue developed. Her husband’s procedure was fairly recent, so they were told the odds were better.

You can have a reversal surgery, but it is expensive (not typically covered by insurance in the U.S.) and does not always work. My friend’s husband is having reversal surgery soon and I believe they were given a 70% estimate of success.

They still do that! My husband and I had dinner there a few years ago and we were served ice cream with a dry ice filled container under it. The ice was “smoking” out from under the ice cream bowl.

The 60s version of Romeo and Juliet shows Juliet’s breasts. The 90s one doesn’t have any nudity except a brief glimpse of Romeo’s butt.
