These are literally all students going back to work part time or with jobs with school.

It’s good to hear from someone already in the industry that they’re even seeing the challenges of automating things especially with changes after COVID and new asset classes like crypto coming in. Gives me some reassurance I’ll be able to get a job once I’m actually done my undergrad :)

Yeah I wouldn’t necessarily say they are decreasing; that’s highly dependent on your location and your skill base. I went to a polytechnic and took a lot of IM/IT courses in addition to the standard financial/managerial accounting courses and although I would say the public salaries are not exactly well paid for the first two years of your career after you get your CPA things change real quick as you’re going to be making 10-15% more each year just by having the designation before you factor in actual promotions/the potential to piggyback and leave for industry. You can’t fully automate and properly conform to IFRS/U.S GAAP; you will always need someone to perform the controls so I’m really not that worried in the scope of a <40 year career.

Yeah I got lucky. Good people skills and working at a public firm as a tech for 6 months while taking three classes last semester in sophomore year with COVID paid off in more ways than one. Through the end of the year I’ll have experience with SAP and hopefully SQL as well, so it leaves me lots of room to navigate around this career path before I even have a chance to get my CPA. Highly recommend anyone that actually wants a job that you may be able to work from home eventually to consider accounting. It isn’t engineering and it doesn’t exactly have glitz and glamour but it is highly underrated as a major especially when I see the success stories on r/accounting

I’m on path to make 40k ~ potentially more ~ as a third year BBA student with two internships this year, both public and private. Pretty stellar.

Man my cat Winnie has literally trained me to like give her attention every time I turn on Netflix. She will legitimately sit in front of the TV and like paw at the TV if I don’t give her attention. I’ve resorted to using a laser pointer to distract her, but like I never had cats growing up and honestly she’s as doglike as a cat could be I think?

So I’m going into my third year of a BBA Co-Op with a specialization in accounting and I have an internship lined up for September already. Pretty stoked had a 3.0 last semester and my grades dipped due to stress but like I’m pretty positive if I take some good classes once I’m back I’ll have no problems getting public/industry offers for accounting.

NAIT is superior in so many ways to the U for people coming from blue collar backgrounds it’s not even funny.

Honestly, lack of personal effort during COVID. I was working 5 hours per day plus taking three college classes for my bachelor degree and she was at home watching TikToks while laid off, genuinely not really being a good roommate and well after me gaining a couple pounds because of quarantine she stated she had “lost attraction for me” and “didn’t see us having a future marriage” after two years of living together. Drove me absolutely insane, made me question myself in so many different ways. It sucked because she kind of got checked out for depression issues and I genuinely tried to help her in healthy ways by encouraging to get outside and trying to build her up. She refused to take any medication for her issues and it was kind of my last straw. Glad I got out of there with my mental health.

Yeah I’m pissed my class isn’t on the curve and I missed the CPA core requirements by 1.5% last semester. Retaking it this semester and I absolutely dogfucked my way to the final and I need above a 69% to pass (I mean, I’ve been working semi-full time ever since this semester started. The burnout is real).

Update: talked to the partner. Going to be working within my scope until my finals are done and really try to crank out as many hours here as I can as it gets pretty slow in the summer months due to the structure of the practice. The CPA told me he was willing to put in a good word for me at Crowe & MacKay where he previously worked so my exit ops just went legitimately through the roof. Thanks for the advice. I laid all my cards on the table and I’m happy.

I’m at my 6 month review, and yeah. I was excited. First real accounting job. I feel like I’ve proved my worth in a tiny office in a crazy season.

Yeah I’m tempted to walk into the partner’s office tomorrow and kind of just lay out everything.

I’m pretty frustrated to find out that I’m getting 50% less than median, even if it is at a smaller firm. I just think it’s kind of a joke considering the expectations and all. My monthly expenses are like $2000 per month and I can’t even make that currently. Regardless of a learning curve I’m confident that I should be receiving a “living” wage for the work and the time.

I guess I’m just going to have to get ballsy.

So I’m a second year NAIT student and I am currently working 35 hours at a small local firm in addition to taking three classes. All of the stuff about imposter syndrome and about the anxiety? Yeah, it’s true. It’s reading week and I haven’t had any classes and I feel like I’ve barely touched my books. Every time the partner talks to me he praises me as some technological genius because I have pretty much taken on the role of an accounting technician and bookkeeper in our office and learned CaseWare, QuickBooks, TaxCycle and SQL in the span of like 2 and a half months. The upside to that is I have my own office, I can ask questions pretty much whenever and I have learned a metric ton of knowledge just for showing up every day.

Busy season is stressful enough as it is. With COVID there are so many challenges and I come home practically exhausted every day. I want to get my CPA but my job has me wondering if I’m going to be stuck doing boomer tax returns for the rest of my life, where I’ll be working with no ability to look after my fitness or my relationship.

I don’t know. Give it your all, but I mean just today I was thinking to myself is this it? I really hope I can branch out into a niche section of accounting and come up with paperless solutions to shit because my workload can be daunting. I dream that with me being 20 I’ll land a cushy industry job once I get my CPA 👍🏼
