Agreed. I think it also depends on what market you're in and how big and competitive it is as well. I'm in a big city in the northeast and there is a lot of competition so i've only seen it through that lense.

Yes definitely if you make Partner. It does become political, what partner/s you work under, how your annual reviews are and then ultimately when it comes time for the class of new Partners, how many are they bringing on that year and how many people are in the running etc. I've seen plenty of people hold out, not get Partner and get stuck in the Managing Director role - then they want out and it's difficult because to make similar comp in industry you're competing against people who have been in industry for years.

So yes I agree you can and best of luck to you but it doesn't work out for everyone. A lot of the people I've worked with who did wind up staying and made partner had done a rotation in the national practice.

Not sure your client base but I've also place VPs & CFOs who started in Big 4, moved to industry before Manager and are now in the 12 years range who make well north of 400K annually. Tends to be more on the alternative investment side though to be fair such as PE or VC shops.
