There's a difference between fading into obscurity and not becoming mainstream. Making some people a lot of money doesn't guarantee adoption by the average person.

Because the masses might never see the value in it or there never comes a great use of the tech that attracts people.

Bottas just performing how he has in recent years would be good enough. He won't be fighting for many wins this season but he should be able to consistently get on the podium.

I think Mercedes is just planning for the future for when Lewis retires. Bottas has done very well for Mercedes in my opinion and the fact that he gets good results while not usually being able to challenge Lewis is probably exactly what the team wants.

At that point you might want to consider just paying someone to do it properly.
