People hear engineer and think difficulty. I grew up with my dad an engineer, and I knew what I would be getting into if I studied it. In high school, I was good at math and physics, but sucked at the other sciences and all other classes. Graduated around a 3.0 gpa in HS and a 2.9 in College with MECH Eng. It was difficult but it’s doable. Not everyone graduates with a 4.0, but you can get get that degree. Don’t doubt yourself and if you have any confidence in math and physics, you can do it.

If you have your EIT, search for that on Indeed or other job search websites. Other than that, I would search for Entry Civil Engineer, Entry Mechanical Engineer, Entry Engineer, etc. I would mix up the words and it would come up with different jobs because search engines aren't perfect.

For the first 3 months at my company, everyone is set at a 70k salary. After that, we are given the option to change to a performance base scale. Which from doing the same amount of work I was doing in the first 3 months, came to $120k a year.

I just graduated in December of 2020. I started at $70k at my job I found in may, and just last week got a raise and now make about $120k. My advice, don’t apply to specific fields, apply to some Civil jobs too, and get your EIT.

She graduates in a week, and her university is online so she doesn't really talk with her classmates as they are from all over the states. From what she has told me, most of them are using this degree to go to Physicians Assistant school or nursing school.

Mine was a big difference.

Without EIT: $0

With EIT: $70,000

I couldn't find a job without my EIT. It's worth taking

Depending on which dorm you get into will be the difference. I was in Campbell my freshman year, the only year I lived in the dorms. The dorms themselves are fine, nothing fancy nothing terrible. I'd bring your own mattress for the bed, the one they provide isn't the best. Your roommate will make the world of difference so be selective is my advice there.

Also, from what I know of what happened in the last few years with flooding, I would stay on the 2nd or 3rd floors, just to avoid any possible water problems.

Depending on the class, I'd just ask someone you know in the math/physics/engineering department if they'd be willing to take it for you and pay them. I helped out my biology and language majoring friends in doing that as an engineering major. They never took anything above calculus 1 so it wasn't a challenge to fit it into my schedule. What math class are you taking?

There are a lot of engineers in the area, in Beaumont or port Arthur. It’s not really “livin it up” but it’s cheap real estate and we’re only about a 1.5 drive from Houston and a 45 minute drive to lake Charles and the casinos

I almost flooded during Imelda and Harvey, I live right off of dowlen and Phelan in Beaumont. I’m not risking it, and I’m getting out while I can.

Learned solid works, autocad, fusion 360 in my years in mechanical. Along with some more advanced ones I wouldn’t touch until you mastered those.

I was told about the policy after working for a few days, half the time I am working, it is only me in my section. Where I work its a restaurant, gaming area, bar, and retail section. for 5 out of 7 hours of my shift, I'm alone, so would I be forced to take my break in the first 2 hours of my shift?

Ok, good to know. Thank you for your help!

2

COMMENT Jun 04 '20

So they can require me to take a break, but they cannot take the time out of my wages without me taking the break? Is this something they could/would fire me if i brought this up?

r/legaladvice Jun 04 '20

Labor Law (Unions) Employer taking 30 minutes from paycheck out of every shift, regardless of break taken of not
