My friend is in this scenario currently. They made an offer on a $1.5 mil home and they plan to liquidate their investments (choosing stocks that have both losses and gains so that there is a nil or minimal tax effect, i.e. the capital gains and capital losses will negate each other). Then they plan to take a home equity loan on the fully cash paid for house and reinvest the money. Depending on the mortgage interest rate vs equity line of credit interest rate your dad can get, for them, they decided it is cheaper to do it with the home line of credit.

Edit: Another consideration is the mortgage deduction I think people in the US get. That isn't a potential benefit for Canadians so didn't think about that before.

People post a lot here complaining about their public accounting experience but honestly you learn a lot more in PA, especially a regional one, than in industry if you are just starting out. They may throw you into the fire but you will emerge a much stronger professional working in PA than in industry as a new grad.

You hit it on the nose there, I'm only still in my big4 job as a high performer bc im trying to increase my capital for my investments, small business, and real estate. All of which bring me passive income. Like you mention, people should aim to have multiple streams of income so that they aren't reliant on their salary.

There is incredible freedom once you know that you can leave anytime, and you stop caring so much or being always afraid of losing your job or getting a bad evaluation or pissing off a manager by saying No to them or logging off on time. The job becomes much more bearable and actually enjoyable.

Exactly, sounds like OP doesnt bother training or teaching his staff or properly communicating his needs and that he is at capacity and just killing themselves to feel like a martyr
