If you eat legumes but not quinoa, that’s the Slow Carb Diet. People lose weight on it.

You might also be able to lose weight even if you add quinoa to Slow Carb.

Have you visited all your old haunts yet after getting to part 2? Once it's back to normal, one of them will explain a new mechanic, and you can use whetstones there.

If it's 77 degrees outside and I hear the AC switch on, I feel a twinge of anxiety and regret because we "don't need it."

Frequently here, the air temperature will be 77° outside in the evening. However, important parts of the house will still be 80° or 85° because of all the sun and heat they've gotten all day. What's more, they don't cool off very much in the evenings because the evening breeze doesn't blow on that side of the house. A/C fixes that.

You may also want to consider installing and using a whole-house fan if you're still twitchy about the costs of running an A/C unit. Sure, it's another expense, but fans don't use nearly as much electricity as A/C compressors and you'll also get a chance to suck cool outside air into your living space and vent warm living-space air into your hot attic, where all that heat can be vented outside instead of warming up your living space by keeping your ceilings warm.

Of course, this isn't very appealing at all if the trees outside are pollinating and/or on fire.

New in HTML5. It hasn’t been around that long, has it?

I would. I’d also say “printf debugging? LUXURY!” in a Yorkshire accent.

(I don’t go any lower-level than Go these days)

I know what YAML is, but what’s HCL? if I were to search for it on the internet I’d expect a bunch of pages about acid (not the fun kind).

There’s only one hat, but it gets passed around among a group of seven people.

Old-school, yes. Universal, no; it’s an Apache feature.

I have an Ergodox EZ and the "media" key is the ; key when held down. It switches to a layer called "media", probably because it has volume-control and play/pause on it.

I tweaked my layout a bit so that ;-IJKL works as the inverted-T arrow keys. ;-ESDF are for pageup, pagedown, home, and end. That said, I'm on macOS, and for me it's much more ergonomic to type C-a and C-e to go to the beginning and end of a line than it is to type command-left and command-right, the native Mac OS keyboard shortcuts that have been around since probably 1984. If you're mostly on Windows you might want a much more ergonomic placement of the Home and End keys.

I also can't think of any games that use the arrow keys as an essential control (at least for right-handed gamers) so I don't think gaming is a concern.

Glittermitten Grove does, but it's a very weird game. I pulled out a normal full-sized keyboard to play that, and put it away when I was done with the game.

Worse than the butterfly keyboards that Apple shipped for years and just got rid of a few months ago?

You should be able to sub in some if you want. I’ve made non-keto cheesecakes with 50/50 Philly/goat cheese. I can’t imagine keto modifications would make cheesecake recipes much more brittle when it comes to substitutions like this.

Neat!

You might want to note somewhere that canonical-spelling pronunciation is to not happy-tense (otherwise you’d spell “dignity” as dignity).

The phrase “word under cursor” smells like an emacsism. I’m mostly a BBEdit guy for my hledger file, but does emacs have one-button autoformat for Ledger files? I’d happily overwrite my own files with the output of hledger print, but all my very helpful explanatory comments and aliases at the top of the file would get removed.

The only automation I use is a TextExpander snippet to expand “;date” into the current date in YYYY-MM-DD format. hledger print | pbcopy and then pasting over all the transactions in the current year’s file in BBEdit to clean up the formatting is about as automated as I get, plus it’s all in a Git repo so all changes to the file get noticed.

That said, I’m only adding about a half-dozen transactions per month.

You might want to talk to some old Objective-C hands, but [nil doSomethingWithObject:o] is a no-op in Objective-C since the receiver is nil, and they seem to like that feature of the language well enough. Beats a null-pointer-dereference segfault, if you ask me.

As far as I can tell, I have a bunch of adaptations that allow me to process large amounts of dairy without any problems. These adaptations showed up sometime in the last 10,000 years, and I'm not about to restrict my diet in order to hold myself to limitations that I simply don't have.

My philosophy:

  • If you can handle lots of dairy, eat lots of dairy if you want
  • If you can only handle middling or small amounts of dairy, only eat that much at most
  • If you can't handle any dairy, don't have any.

I had a look at what they do and it seems like they solve a problem that other people have that I don't.

However, they seem to solve problems that library authors have, so I'm weakly in favor.
