The kitty is probably curious about you, and possibly a bit lonely as their hooman is gone.

What I'd suggest is that you spend some time playing with the kitty. Offer a wand toy or a small stuffed kitty toy.

If kitty does something you don't like, such as climbing up your leg, gently take kitty off and ignore it for a few minutes. On the other hand, when kitty does something you want to encourage, such as snuggling your leg, offer pets, praise, and positive attention. In other words, bad behaviour loses kitty the good stuff, and good behaviour gets it back.

You may well find that once the kitty has gotten to know you, they calm down a bit. Cats can be very nice pets.

One point (and for the record I am NOT saying OP is doing this): sometimes relatives will take someone into their home for...less than altruistic reasons. Sadly, elder abuse is not uncommon, and sometimes people will insist someone live with them specifically for that reason, especially in order to financially abuse them.

Again, I just want to point out that I am NOT saying that OP and her husband have done this. I'm just pointing out that allowing someone to live with you isn't automatically an indication that you actually care about them.
