  • Smokey is a reference to Smokey Yunick
  • Thomasville Speedway is based on tracks like Oconeechee and the old Charlotte dirt track; the coty itself may be a reference to Herb Thomas
  • Junior Moon is based on Junior Johnson; i believe they made references to him running moonshine
  • River Scott is based on Wendell Scott
  • Louise Nash is based on Louise Smith (who drove a Nash Ambassador)

That's just off the top of my head

To add-on, the class name is almost always the first named ship. The current classes being the Los-Angeles (slowly being decommissioned), Ohio, Virginia (Los Angeles replacement), and Columbia (future Ohio replacement). Others include the Thresher/Permit class, Balao, and Gato classes. Thresher class was renamed after the Thresher sank.

I've been in a room like that when I worked in the auto industry. It's trippy, but I think the boredom would influence me to leave the room more than anything else. Even if it is weird to hear the blood in your ears.

If that’s what you mean, you probably should have said that.

Anyone with reading comprehension skills beyond those of a toddler could see that's exactly what they said.

And yeah, they sent Dan home and couldn’t participate in the rest of the game.

Only after he harassed a producer, and was allowed to continue in the game after the first incident.

Quit being an apologist for the show's shitty handling of these situations.

Yeah, the knowledge base in the industry is far better now. Understanding the moisture burn rate of LEDs wasn't really something that was widespread in the design space until maybe 2015? Understanding how to even model airflow in a lamp wasn't needed until then because incandescent bulbs got plenty hot.

Doesn't excuse Tesla using these kinds of designs, because even AL-Automotive Lighting is capable of mostly avoiding these issues now.

COMMENT Jun 12 '21

Automotive lighting is hard, especially with the increasing trend away from incandescent/xenon/HID bulbs. Fighting moisture is a huge issue because of the lower heat output. You can't completely seal the light because you'll still have moisture issues.

That's not even taking into account how much of a pain in the ass it is to join the lens and housing plastics.

That said, suppliers like Hella, Magna, and Valeo have gotten a lot of their shit figured out since the first LED lights; hell, even back when I was in automotive lighting to now has been a huge jump. But Tesla's designs look like shit that was being churned out around 2011.

COMMENT Jun 12 '21

That's possible, but a sealed taillight, particularly in that area of the trunk, shouldn't see that much moisture even with a damaged seal. If it had a bulb it'd be a different story. Sealed lights don't have a lot of paths for moisture, and they typically have moisture seals so excess water can evaporate out.

Granted, I don't doubt that VLS is using cheaper compression-set gaskets instead of the more expensive ones. That definitely doesn't help.

And yeah, I'd worry about what else is going on back there.

16

COMMENT Jun 12 '21

Guarantee there's a failure on the joint of the housing and lens. Given that it's LED, the whole thing should be sealed with a couple vents. If they're still with VLS as their light supplier...well, you get what you pay for, and Varroc doesn't charge as much.

These are the kinds of issues that you expect on a car that's half the cost of a Model 3.

They recently launched a DLC that completely broke their game.

Every Stellaris DLC breaks the game. It's pretty much two questions:

  • What features are going to be completely, unplayably broken? And
  • What features are going to be completely broken and exploitable in ways that would make the Spiffing Brit dump out his Yorkshire Tea in disgust?
