If the character looks unappealing

She doesn't look unappealing, she might look sexually unattractive. Even though I think they did a good job in this image, it looks very detailed and interesting, real. I'd absolutely not say she's unappealing if considering her as an external character.

But also: 1. there's loads of characters who are not sexually attractive (to me), do they need to be for you to play their games? Does it only apply if they're of the gender you're sexually attracted to? Do you need to be attracted to Rico Rodriguez to play JC? 2. the point is she's supposed to be YOU, she's an avatar of your RPG. Do you expect to be sexually attracted to yourself to be able to proceed?

Maybe I'm in a minority, but I love my characters to feel real within their world much more than having them be sexually attractive to me. How do I play anything otherwise? Lego games, Styx, Stardew, Portal, basically any game that comes to mind matches this.

If you interpret the value as a ASCII / Unicode character, yes.

But you can interpret it as many things: it can be a pixel, a number, a note. This is why most things in computing have a "header" which is some standard definition which says what follows it. For example, networking packages have it, MP3s, most images, etc.

The alternative to this for files (at least on windows) is file extensions. By using them, the OS knows how to interpret whatever jumble of bits it finds in a file.

Everything is just bits, the important part is how you use them. In theory, you could "play" a Word document as an audio file or make a song be an image. It wouldn't be anything you'd want to hear/see, but it's possible.
