Biglaw lawyer in VHCOL city, 5 years experience. $280k base, $80k normal end of year bonus, and $52k please for the love of god don't quit bonus.

Health insurance is ok, no 401k match, vacations and holidays are kind of a running joke.

Lol, this is very relatable, my SO nearly has panic attacks every time I want to talk about finances.

Congrats! I've been thinking about making a similar move (big pay cut for normal hours) but have been too scared.

On average I don't think we work much less (averaged over the year), but it's more regular. I've had plenty of late nights, but I've never pulled an all-nighter at the office. On the other hand, I've had very few weeks that are just dead.

I gave up on /FI because it felt like they got tired of repetitive posts so they moderated out almost all new content. I'm not quite in this demographic, so I don't start posts here, but this sub is far more interesting

They pay federal taxes.

If they're on a reservation they may not pay state taxes, but that also means they don't get state services, so the lack of water mentioned above, and they're generally stuck on unproductive land

The ones people typically invest in are listed transactions, which means investors have to tell the IRS about them and the IRS does not like them. Real ones have a legitimate use but won't get the same tax benefit being sold. Be careful.

Maybe look for an opportunity zone fund?

I'm in an industry where we all pretty much know what each other makes, so I talk to my friends in the same career about money, investing, & retirement accounts. It's really nice to be able to have these sorts of frank discussions with people who are in similar positions.

I also talk to my sister, who is in a very different career, about details because we always do our best to be supportive of each other. She also asks me for advice and to work through numbers with her. If she didn't ask, I'd be a lot more hesitant to bring these things up. My mother was raised working class, and it horrifies her how open we are about money.

I don't talk to friends in other careers about any details, just more vaguely, because our situations are so different.

As a general matter when you have a character with unusual speech patterns, it can be helpful to have a style guide for a character, listing things like phrases or words they often use, or ways their grammar is weird so you can keep it consistent.

I think for the rock golem, having it unable to pronounce 'th' is a nice touch and using 'd in it's place shouldn't interfere with a reader's ability to understand. For the Watcher, I think it works as long as it's not too uncharacteristic for the world you've built. If everyone else is yeeting it's going to be incongruous.

It was DC in the '90s so hopefully the laws have changed since then, but it's always good to check!

What kids are named may depend on state law. I knew a couple who had agreed to give their daughters the mother’s last name and the sons the father’s last name. They got to the hospital to deliver their first baby and learned that if the couple was married the child was required to take the father’s last name but if the mother was unmarried the child was required to take her last name.

Also women changing their names on marriage really comes from the English legal tradition, it doesn’t happen in large portions of the world.

I love this dress and seriously considered getting it. I think it needs a bit more poof at the bottom to have more of a bell shape like on models on Modcloth (https://www.modcloth.com/shop/newarrivals/chi-chi-london-exquisite-elegance-lace-dress/141856.html).

It sounds like you need to put some people on an information diet. If they’re being pushy with their opinions and they’re not paying for the specific thing under discussion, then they don’t get to know what’s going to happen in advance. Try to stay vague but positive when people ask!

As someone else who wanted to elope but is now wedding planning I definitely feel for you!
